Is it just me or was that an absolutely excellent speech
Wouldn't have always been his biggest fan but he and the government have shown real leadership with all of this.

Am I allowed to say he put Boris utterly in the shade?

Rainallnight · 17/03/2020 22:22

Absolutely fantastic. I’m Irish living in London, but we’ve relocated back to Ireland because of corona, for various complicated family reasons.

It was so reassuring to be spoken to by a proper leader, including on specifics like testing and looking after the elderly.

SuddenArborealStop · 17/03/2020 22:25

I'm no fan but I felt proud watching him. I know he's not technically in charge at the moment but he finally felt like a leader to me... If the election were rerun next week I'm betting the result would be different

Heygirlheyboy · 17/03/2020 22:26

Exactly, agree 100%!

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 17/03/2020 22:26

That was a powerful speech. Honest but not scaremongering

SuddenArborealStop · 17/03/2020 22:28

I also liked the Teresa Mannion quote Grin

Heygirlheyboy · 17/03/2020 22:29

What was that, no unnecessary journeys?!

AnnieJ1985 · 17/03/2020 22:30

He did great. As someone who will probably need "cocooning" I thought he was measured and reassuring.

Heygirlheyboy · 17/03/2020 22:34

Very reassuring. A man with a plan.

pachyderm · 17/03/2020 22:53

I thought he was good too, and I'm not a fan. He sounds like a grownup speaking to grownups. I appreciate the honesty even though it scared the living jaysus out of me. Sad

janetheimpaler · 17/03/2020 22:58

He makes me feel so proud. His speech about closing schools and colleges last week was also measured, precise and showed good, old-fashioned "Irish decency".

BadTigerKitty · 17/03/2020 23:20

I thought he was very impressive. Deadly serious but very measured in spelling out the facts. I find his approach very reassuring. Also find that Simon Harris has really stepped up and is equally decisive, firm and reassuring. People are listening. Thankfully.

BadTigerKitty · 17/03/2020 23:23

Oh, but I also think that this speech will end up to 'Sunscreen' in the future. When we can laugh at the situation we're in. That may be tomorrow Wink

MindyStClaire · 17/03/2020 23:34

Just watched it there and had a little cry. Excellent speech. No pulling of punches, but calm, measured and reassuring. The contrast with NI and the UK was, as ever these days, thoroughly depressing.

Designerenvy · 17/03/2020 23:51

Powerful address that we needed to hear . Very clearly setting out projections and what measures are needed now and in the very near future.
Cocooning our older generation and those with vulnerabilities is a brave, worrying but necessary next step. I'd say this will happen, then lock down .
I feel he is trying to delay lockdown as long as possible, for peoples mental health . He very clearly spoke about social distancing and I really hope people listen .
He indicated schools would be closed until summer, mentioning that contingency plans were being put in place for LC and college exams .
He spoke openly, honestly and gave just enough information for people to process at this time.
He is showing great leadership skills , I couldn't imagine anyone doing a better a job.....and I'm usually not a fan of his.

TimeGoesBy · 17/03/2020 23:56

Excellent speech. Think Leo and the two Simons are doing a superb job. Very proud of how the country are handling the situation. Ironically, although we are all separated, I don’t think we have ever been so united.

Blondie1092 · 18/03/2020 00:02

An absolutely fantastic speech. He has shown his true colours as a leader and many more need to follow suit!! (Nudge nudge Boris). I actually had a tear in my eye when I was watching this evening. Made me quite emotional. He is someone the whole country can place their trust in for this awful situation we find ourselves in.

Blondie1092 · 18/03/2020 00:04

Also, I'm in NI and I am completely ASHAMED of the circus Boris is created. They don't call him BoJo the clown for nothing.

AngelaScandal · 18/03/2020 00:05

Jesus. This is making me want to vote FG!
FFS

Designerenvy · 18/03/2020 00:09

@Boscoismyspiritanimal, I feel if the general election was after this, there would be a very different result. I'm no FG fan, but they are doing us proud.
It's a pity it took a pandemic to see this, but they are really stepping up and providing leadership and guidance when we need it the most .

chinam · 18/03/2020 00:13

Now, now. Get a hold of yourself @Boscoismyspirtitanimal. The speech was good but not that good.
Only kidding, I'm not a FG supporter but I think Leo and co are doing a really good job in very difficult circumstances.

halcyondays · 18/03/2020 00:20

He seemed very honest but reassuring. I’d also like to claim him for the north.

SageRosemary · 18/03/2020 00:35

I thought he was excellent, got the tone exactly right. Think we got a little hint there may be no JC this year, do you think? So glad the schools and colleges are off now. Have to say all the parties seem to be stepping up to the plate in the light of Covid19. Wonder will we get an early resolution to a grand coalition?

Superlooper · 18/03/2020 00:39

He was speaking as a doctor, not a politician or economist, I thought. Glad he's still acting Taoiseach.

JaneJeffer · 18/03/2020 00:42

It was a really good speech and I hope anyone who wasn't taking this seriously enough will do now.
