Coronavirus in Ireland/N Ireland

beanaseireann · 27/02/2020 19:56

The first case of Coronavirus has been confirmed in Northern Ireland.
A passenger travelled from Italy to the North via Dublin.
I don't know how we will cope in the Republic if we have large numbers ill with the virus as our health service is already at breaking point.

@ElspethFlashman that sounds good. Glad you feel they're doing a good job. Are you North or Republic? All the pulling together is so heart warming

I feel your update will help stop my visions of hundreds of people in Hospital corridors.

Also pleased to hear that Dyson are making ventilators

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 26/03/2020 20:12

Was anyone just out for the one minute clap? It was quite moving. 👏🏼👏🏼

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 26/03/2020 20:21

Yes I was out with DS. Lots of saucepans, car horns, whistles and cheering. Lovely to hear.

eggandonion · 26/03/2020 20:30

We clapped, we could hear others. Dd1 couldn't hear anyone where she lives.

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 26/03/2020 20:41

I was surprised how many we could hear. All terribly civilised round these parts, no horns or pot walloping, just clapping and a few children enjoying the chance to cheer at bedtime Grin

Deadringer · 26/03/2020 21:14

Just two other people out on our road, so a bit disappointing.

honeyrider · 26/03/2020 21:47

10 deaths in the last 24 hours in ROI. RIP.

ElspethFlashman · 26/03/2020 21:48

Yeah I'm a nurse in a hospital in ROI.

Not gonna lie, it's hugely stressful keeping up with all the precautions. And I get very claustrophobic in the masks and the gowns are so sweaty. And people at work can talk about nothing else and you just long for another topic of conversation. So I am feeling a lot of stress just being in that atmosphere and I don't enjoy work as much as I did. I would much prefer to be working from home and just ignore it more.

But the panic we see in other countries isn't present, thank God.

ElspethFlashman · 26/03/2020 21:51

The 10 deaths are very sad. Median age is 79.

The progression from catching it to death is 17-20 days, so these are people who caught it in the first week or so of it coming to Ireland. Awful for the families.

eggandonion · 26/03/2020 21:58

This is Ireland - I know people who know two of today's 'people'. One had recent diagnosis of a health problem. It's a really difficult time for a family to have to face a funeral.
Look after yourself Elspeth, the rest of us have much easier rules to follow.

7Days · 26/03/2020 21:58

Best of luck to you Elspeth, and thanks 👏 👏

buckeejit · 26/03/2020 22:06

Applause all round our wee estate & much WhatsApp chat about it. We all have loved ones in nhs.

@ElspethFlashman I imagine this waiting part is so hard. Hope our frontline workers up here feel as confident as you do & that everyone in the front line all over this island feels the power of strength, love & respect coming your way to help carry you through. X

ElspethFlashman · 26/03/2020 22:17

Thanks a mill.

Better go to bed now, early start.

Just occurred to me though that since there is a timeline of up to 20 days as I said, well..... Cheltenham was on the 10th to 13th. So next week is when we may see Cheltenham people in ICU or worse. Sad

7Days · 26/03/2020 22:20

@Squigean how are you this evening?

Iblinkedandiamold · 26/03/2020 22:39

I didn't clap as I was with my parents no other houses around. I was clapping on the inside. Watched it in the news and shed a little tear. Still crying at all the facebook posts too, the one from London is amazing.
Thank you @ElspethFlashman for all you are doing. Keep safe.
@Squigean hope you're doing okay.

LadyEloise · 27/03/2020 00:16

ElspethFlashman thank you and all those working so hard to help us.Thanks
On our road there were a good few out clapping for the wonderful healthcare workers.

ArlenesWoodBurningStove · 27/03/2020 08:04

Oh Elspeth, that sounds tough going for half an hour, never mind a full day. Good on yer.

JaneJeffer · 27/03/2020 21:11

So we're on full lockdown now.

eggandonion · 27/03/2020 21:16

I think they are very calming, unlike UK counterpart! But it sucks.

JaneJeffer · 27/03/2020 21:17

Simon Harris was on earlier answering children's questions. He was so lovely and reassuring.

Iblinkedandiamold · 27/03/2020 21:22

Yep Lockdown. No more going to my parents house. Who's going to make my Sunday dinner now. Grin
Luckily I have Alexa to talk to.

KayakingOnDown · 27/03/2020 21:48

What does full lockdown mean? Is it being enforced?

JaneJeffer · 27/03/2020 21:52

Well you could be stopped and have to produce your driving licence.

ElspethFlashman · 27/03/2020 21:54

Yes Gardaí are going to be everywhere.

In reality it just clears up some lingering messiness, like people evacuating to their holiday homes in Achill and the Aran Islands (which was really pissing off the Islanders), also things like groups of youths messing about on greens with a bunch of cans.

Also might put a bit of cop on to the over 70s who were still visiting people on the QT and allowing family to visit them.

Tbh I think it's just rubber stamping what 90% of the population have been doing anyway.

Barbararara · 27/03/2020 21:54

Anyone seen an explanation of “cocooning”. I can’t get onto gov.ie to see any details
