Coronavirus in Ireland/N Ireland

beanaseireann · 27/02/2020 19:56

The first case of Coronavirus has been confirmed in Northern Ireland.
A passenger travelled from Italy to the North via Dublin.
I don't know how we will cope in the Republic if we have large numbers ill with the virus as our health service is already at breaking point.

Not impressed at all by Leo. Nothing new to say, mostly posturing.

And no help for small business when the UK have pledged 320 billion? We are so fucked.

Smurf123 · 17/03/2020 21:14

Can he be in charge of NI too?

SlayingDragons · 17/03/2020 21:14

Whatever you may think of his party politics, it can’t be denied that Leo is a genuinely lovely man who clearly cares about the people he serves. (I wish I could say the same about Boris but let’s be honest - I can only say the opposite)

BlueBirdGreenFence · 17/03/2020 21:14

That sounded exactly like there's going to be a full scale lockdown. I honestly found that the most sobering message since this entire thing began.

JaneJeffer · 17/03/2020 21:15

very glad he's in charge me too and that the two Simons are still there as well.

NoGravyForYou · 17/03/2020 21:15

Honestly this all feels like the beginnings of a zombie movie.

SlayingDragons · 17/03/2020 21:16

Particularly glad he addressed the mental health side of things. It’s crucial and the British government are totally ignoring it.

honeyrider · 17/03/2020 21:16

I wish he put the country in lock down. We need protecting from the selfish twats that are in our midst.

NoGravyForYou · 17/03/2020 21:17

Crazy that he had to address the whatsapp messages in a national address!

Dk20 · 17/03/2020 21:18

@honeyrider me too, I am disappointed. So many people have to go to work tomorrow where little protective measures have been put in place, and although they may be aware of social distancing, the other people they work with may not be

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 17/03/2020 21:19

Oh there’s no doubt there absolutely will be a lockdown, but I fully expected it to be announced tonight. I’m quite shocked that it wasn’t.

MysweetAudrina · 17/03/2020 21:19

Just saying to dh I am glad he is in charge. I have been impressed with the way things are being handled. I'm cs and there were emails circulating around gov depts yesterday looking for staff to volunteer to work as contact tracers and in social protection offices and take up was huge.

Iblinkedandiamold · 17/03/2020 21:26

Okay I cried a little. It's starting to get very real now. I am worried for my parents. They are the only people I am seeing at the moment. I miss my son and my grandchild, my brothers and my niece and nephew. One nephew is only new God knows when I'll see him again or my little grandchild.
Months and months of this, it's all so surreal. I keep saying it, it's like a film.

eggandonion · 17/03/2020 21:28

Whatever their politics, the 'caretakers' know their civil servants and European counterparts.
I hope GDPR won't get in the way of tracing?

Cocolapew · 17/03/2020 21:36

A lot of special schools in NI have closed for this week at least, mine isn't yet, but I fall into the category where I should self isolate for 12 weeks (!) we were asked by text to let the school know by 7pm if any of us was going to.

Cocolapew · 17/03/2020 21:39

Oh it's just announced it's closed due to the amount of staff self isolating.

honeyrider · 17/03/2020 21:40

Those wanting to get back to Ireland have until midnight on Thursday to be guaranteed a flight home after that they're on their own. I think he'll announce a lockdown after that.

eggandonion · 17/03/2020 21:41

Do look after yourselves, anyone who needs to self isolate.

Deadringer · 17/03/2020 22:10

I am not a fan of Leo's but i think he did very well, i actually found his speech quite moving.

ElspethFlashman · 17/03/2020 22:46

I had a bit of a cry too. Felt like a wartime speech.

We're in good hands though.

eggandonion · 17/03/2020 22:48

I think being part of a medical family is good just now, he has inside info! I wish we'd been able to keep a lot of our graduates here, doctors, nurses and therapists. I hope they are safe around the world, what horror.

OhMargo · 17/03/2020 22:51

This was an address to the nation on Ireland's National Holiday.

Was very impressed I have to say.

The supports to biz and individuals affected will take shape soon I think.

Important message to get across now is that this virus is not our friend, and we have to observe the rules going forward.

7Days · 17/03/2020 23:03

I was reassured by his speech.
He is not lying when he said Your lives shall be our highest priority.
Thought the Churchill reference was a bit off, but other than that, but other than that, he came across as incredibly switched on and competent. All his family are medical, you know he gets it.

MadeForThis · 17/03/2020 23:25

I was very impressed. Cried a bit too. It's all seeming very real now. And still like we have woken up in a movie. Would much prefer Leo to have my back than Boris.

DuchessDumbarton · 17/03/2020 23:25

It wasn't a perfect speech - there were parts that were very "speech writer heavy".
BUT, the overall tone was bang on.

We're in this together, do the basics, yes teens will be bored.
Don't forget all the people who are at work this evening and out tomorrow morning making sure that we have what we need.

It's going to cost a lot.
But, the stakes couldn't be higher.... it's the value we put on every human life.

Our elderly.
Our kids with Cystic Fibrosis, or on chemo, or with heart defects.
Our friends who have asthma, or diabetes.

Whatever you may think of them in general, there's not much to fault Leo or Simon Coveney. Simon Harris I've not seen much of though?
