Coronavirus in Ireland/N Ireland

beanaseireann · 27/02/2020 19:56

The first case of Coronavirus has been confirmed in Northern Ireland.
A passenger travelled from Italy to the North via Dublin.
I don't know how we will cope in the Republic if we have large numbers ill with the virus as our health service is already at breaking point.

BREAKING NEWS: An Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, will address the country tonight at 9pm on RTE One...

I wonder are we going into lock down now

buckeejit · 17/03/2020 20:19

Did robin Swann say they have 80 respirators in NI? And ordering another 40? Or was that beds?

They are seriously under reporting & it's so risky & worrying.

If anyone is on Facebook & distancing with dc the page 'family lockdown tips & ideas' is amazing. The likes of this & lots of experts doing vids etc

Wonder what Leo has got to say to us. We ventured out for a walk today and so did Every man and his dog, it was busier in some places than I've seen in a long time. Very few people keeping to the 1.5m between people rule which was stressful.

eggandonion · 17/03/2020 20:22

We went to the beach and people were fairly well spaced - but loads of people going while we were on the way home. Unless they were going to Lidl! It's on the way to the beach.

SegregateMumBev · 17/03/2020 20:34

I cried at the notice in Lidl today reminding people to be kind.

I took a visually impaired friend out for a walk today, to explain that we probably won’t be able to do this for a while. This evening she phoned me to tell me that her daughter has symptoms and they are self isolating.

How quick is the incubation or infection period?

eggandonion · 17/03/2020 20:36

Dh reckons 5-7 days.

I'm sure by now we all think we have symptoms. In the crash we knew we had no money!

JaneJeffer · 17/03/2020 20:44

RTE has put George Lee in charge I wish they hadn't, he stresses me out!

ElspethFlashman · 17/03/2020 20:44

This is a good summation of today's developments.

www.rte.ie/news/coronavirus/2020/0317/1123663-coronavirus-ireland/

Also the Gardaí are hiring a shitload of extra cars to visit people in need.

ElspethFlashman · 17/03/2020 20:46

Thank God no more deaths today in ROI.

We have been very fortunate to only have 2 so far. ICUs definitely not overburdened yet, from what I've heard.

Dk20 · 17/03/2020 20:48

I'm really nervous about Leo speaking at 9pm.

eggandonion · 17/03/2020 20:50

George is very shouty, but less shouty than Charlie Bird. I wonder what all the sports reporters will do?

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 17/03/2020 20:50

Do we reckon Leo is going to announce lockdown from Thursday?

Dk20 · 17/03/2020 20:51

Yes I think lockdown is coming, hes called the television broadcast under an act that is used for emergencies

Dk20 · 17/03/2020 20:52

To be honest though I think it would be better off to call it to start immediately, if we wait until Thursday morning there will be so many people panicking tomorrow

SuDaji · 17/03/2020 20:54

For cases in NI I have heard (rumour only) that there were apparently 9 in Antrim Hospital, and there was a least 1 in Causeway. Take with a pinch of salt, as I say no idea how accurate that is.

NoGravyForYou · 17/03/2020 20:55

Where did you hear that @D2k

chartreuse · 17/03/2020 20:55

I think lockdown from Thursday night. We have everything we need but I'm still nervous about it.

Dk20 · 17/03/2020 20:56

@NoGravyForYou every news report has it included, rte, the journal etc

chartreuse · 17/03/2020 20:56

@NoGravyForYou it's on the RTÉ site

HorseOutside · 17/03/2020 21:00

Here we go...

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 17/03/2020 21:10

This doesn’t sound like he’s announcing a lockdown.

chartreuse · 17/03/2020 21:12

He did that very well, very glad he's in charge

NoGravyForYou · 17/03/2020 21:13

Nothing new there but a nice speech non the less. Basically saying the schools will be off for much longer than the next week or so.

buckeejit · 17/03/2020 21:13

He is so much more reassuring than Boris. Give him the North!
