Irish treats for England

Hi folks, I'm returning to visit my old work in England and wanted to bring the department some typical Irish treats that can't be got in England but can't think of what to bring. Any suggestions?

OP posts:

*not just cheese

ThreeFish · 11/08/2017 22:27

I actually came on to say Abernethy butter and got distracted by potato bread. 😄 But when I looked for an image of it to post, they sell it in Harrods and Fortnum & Mason so it's no longer exclusive to Ireland. I bet they pay more for it though!

Lindy2 · 11/08/2017 22:39

Not a club biscuit then! Thanks everyone for enlightening me. I've never seen that drink in England.

sweetbabboo · 11/08/2017 22:43

You can get most of that in the World Foods section of Tesco, pay a fair whack for it tho.

JuicyCake · 11/08/2017 22:48

Veda? Fifteens? Punjana? Are these more NI things? Or am I missing out...
Remember living in London years ago & finding a corner shop that sold Irish Cadbury's.
Used to get Manhattan popcorn brought over. Why is there no good popcorn over yonder???
Top hats. Good work people! We had then at all of our childhood parties!

HolyShmoly · 11/08/2017 23:41

Punjana is standard Irish tea. It just gets lost in the Barry's/Lyons kurfuffle. I find Ringtons the best over here.

Fifteens are a traybake with, I want to say glace cherries? And other stuff. Fifteens and Veda are more NI stuff. I don't think I've ever had veda, I keep picturing soreen when I try to think of it.

IKnewItWasBullshitAllAlong · 11/08/2017 23:44

kimberley biscuits
barry's tea
barmbrack
red lemonade!!

FreeButtonBee · 11/08/2017 23:55

Ballymaloe relish can be had on ocado. Thank the lord

NI tatyo vs RoI tatyo is a difficult argument (pink NI tatyo for the win)

Love proper mint crunch and honeycomb crunch Cadburys

I brought mikado biscuit to an office 'intetnational' party and they were very well received by the NI contingent

FedUpWithBriiiiiick · 11/08/2017 23:56

Veda (NOT the pre sliced shite)
BROWN lemonade (red lemonade indeed... behave yourself!)
Nordie tayto
Coleraine cheddar (mature)
Punjana
Ormo breakfast pack
Mash direct champ
Spelga yogurts
Cookstown sausages (the sizzle!)
GALTEE BACON!!

I MIGHT be from Norn Iron...

krisskross · 11/08/2017 23:57

Morrisons sell barrys tea, red lemonade, barn back and kimberly. Cidona?

FedUpWithBriiiiiick · 11/08/2017 23:58

Oh jesus, I forgot about Club Rock Shandy!

squoosh · 12/08/2017 00:00

Iceland sell Kimberley, Mikado, and Coconut Cream. But no purple snacks Sad

FedUpWithBriiiiiick · 12/08/2017 00:04

If only Stewarts/Crazy Prices were still here, we could all have yellow pack crisps...

squoosh · 12/08/2017 00:09

Yellow pack crisps? Grin

The only reason anyone bought them was because they were cheap. Same with Superquinn's Thrifty brand.

tabulahrasa · 12/08/2017 00:10

Um, I'm Scottish and top hats have been at every children's party and church/school event involving cakes I've ever been to, west and east coast as well, so not even region specific oh and mikado are in every supermarket.

FedUpWithBriiiiiick · 12/08/2017 00:12

@squoosh I remember being totally MORTO if Mum put them in my lunch box, but also ramming about three packs in one go of them in my face at home.

FedUpWithBriiiiiick · 12/08/2017 00:14

@tabularasa I believe on a previous traybake discussion thread it was agreed by all parties that they are very much a Presbyterian thing and therefore rampant in both Scotland and NI.

tabulahrasa · 12/08/2017 00:18

"I believe on a previous traybake discussion thread it was agreed by all parties that they are very much a Presbyterian thing and therefore rampant in both Scotland and NI."

It was? They are?

Are they like utilitarian cakes then? Lol

FedUpWithBriiiiiick · 12/08/2017 00:24

Argh, wrong thread, it must have been in Chat Blush

squoosh · 12/08/2017 00:26

Oh yes I've read about the tray bakes and and the 15s. I personally think that in the name of cordial cross border relations some kind NIer should whip up a batch of 15s and have them couriered to me with haste.

FedUpWithBriiiiiick · 12/08/2017 00:28

@squoosh I will send over the traybake when you send over the Chocolate Kimberlys and Irish (gold foil only pls) Dairy Milk.

flummoxedlummox · 12/08/2017 00:29

Is Cidona still a thing over there? Incidentally my mom & dad were both Irish and we used to get "care" parcels from two counties every xmas in the early 70's. Grin

squoosh · 12/08/2017 00:30

That's a deal FedUp. Keep an eye out for a low flying package containing high fat, high sugar goods at around 11am tomorrow.

FedUpWithBriiiiiick · 12/08/2017 00:32

Will there be a pre drop warning Squoosh?

"Cleaners to the basement, please. Cleaners to the basement"
