Sky renewal £50 more than same deal for new customers

I’ve started picking apart my finances and my sky contract is due for renewal, I phoned them and the best deal they said they could give me was £130 which I am unwilling to pay. I’ve spent time looking and the exact same package for a new customer would be £83. I’ve been a customer for 18 years.

any tips on getting them to lower offers, else I’m going to have to cancel it all and move but we really need sky sports. Is there any other way to get sky sports so you can record it as well, that’s the only thing sky have that I absolutely need.

I have found it so complex to try and pick apart what you can get from where. Is that how they trap you by making it so complicated it’s not worth the hassle. I am absolutely fuming about the amount of money companies take for the same product and how pricing is so varied. I’m also looking at all our mobiles. I pay £30 for one of my dds phones and the other is £8 for exact same data and stuff. It’s madness.

tell them you want to cancel your contract and you’ll find they will reduce the price. I believe ee tv you can add sky sports to as an extra package if you wanted to look as an alternative, you can record on their boxes.

cinquanta · 06/09/2026 09:55

Ring them up and tell them you want to cancel. When we really did want to cancel they offered us some really cheap deals to try and encourage us to stay.

We still cancelled.

bababamama · 06/09/2026 10:03

Haggle with the “I’m quitting” team. I managed to negotiate free sky sports and free sky cinema for 2 years, yes I’m paying more than a new customer on the basic package but I’m getting everything

liquoriceallsortfamily · 06/09/2026 10:05

You can get Sky Sports via NOW tv .

ditavonteesed · 06/09/2026 10:06

I’ve looked and they do a blue light deal that’s insanely cheap so I’m going to phone and say I’m cancelling u less they offer me that. Also virgin is £60 for the same so I’m happy to follow through if need be.

When you call select the options for termination not renewal.

you can get Sky Sports from lots of suppliers- ours is EE and I think they also do a recorder box.

ditavonteesed · 06/09/2026 10:09

Thanks that’s helpful

if you move to a different provider just double check with them that you can record, if this is important to you.

New Virgin customers cannot record, it’s streaming or live tv only - I think a few other companies are heading this way too. I was really annoyed when we switched as this wasn’t made clear at all. However, I am used to it now, they just aren’t as up front about it as they should be!

Bjorkdidit · 06/09/2026 15:49

Can you move to Now TV instead? Similar services, no contract and much cheaper especially you cancel as they'll give you a discount to stay.

For me being able to record is vital.
That’s why we left Virgin and went with Sky Q.
I would have liked Sky Glass but I wouldn’t have been able to record in the way I always have done.
We live in Ireland and don’t have access to the IPlayer. We don’t pay the UK licence fee so why should we get the IPlayer, fair enough.
I think it’s a way for the cash strapped BBC to make money - open up the BBC Iplayer to those who don’t have a UK address or VPN, via a subscription.
I wrote in with my suggestion and got the usual “…..We have no plans to do so……”

ditavonteesed · 06/09/2026 17:19

Omg I’ve spent half the day on the phone to sky and am getting absolutely nowhere.
I went in to Vodafone to sort out dds phones and they were so rude that she is now on gift gaff so at least that’s sorted.
I can’t even work out what I need anymore, thinking of just switching everything to virgin but one package has one of the channels dh needs and another package has another one but no package has all of them. Why is this so complicated?

OP posts:
summater · 06/09/2026 17:32

If you leave Sky and rejoin you may not be able to get Sky Q as they seem to be discontinuing it. I guess you have that if you can record

ditavonteesed · 06/09/2026 17:49

Ive talked dh into living without sky q.
im now so mad at them that they would have to offer me the moon on a stick to keep me

So how does switching to virgin actually work? Is it really stressful?

OP posts:
ineedacoffee222 · 06/09/2026 21:05

I wouldn’t switch if recording programmes is important to you - we had a big shock when we switched to Virgin & then wasted days being passed about by customer service only to end up being told they no longer provide TiVo boxes!

The switching process was relatively straightforward though & Sky might end up offering you a really good deal but they are still way more expensive and won’t match what other providers can offer.

Virgin Fibre Broadband is also wayyyy better than Sky for a much lower price.

i don’t regret leaving Sky as their Customer Service had become awful in the past few years and they completely messed us around when we moved home, we also save about £70 a month too (Sky is way overpriced). But I REALLY miss not being able to record and fast forward through adverts - which you cannot do when streaming some programmes on the newer streaming services!

Good luck with it, it’s such effort 😂

mummyh2016 · 06/09/2026 21:58

Honestly it’s bonkers. A couple of years ago our contract was up, rang them to haggle, got nowhere. A friend of ours works for Sky so offered us this friends and family deal. I rang Sky again and they wouldn’t match it. I was told I needed to cancel then the new contract be in DH name. It was a massive waste of time, we had to return the boxes, then they had to arrange an engineer visit for someone to set up our ‘new’ boxes (exact same as the ones we’d returned). Even the guy on the phone said it was going to cost Sky more than allowing us them to match the deal but he couldn’t get round it. When that deal was up we cancelled altogether and just have a couple of streaming subscriptions now.

Banjas · 07/09/2026 14:00

Customer Service has gone to pot.
Just had it with Virgin our Broadband supplier. 😢
I did get a human eventually but she wouldn’t let us speak with her supervisor.
Those big companies don’t give a sh*t about their customers. Profit is King. Nothing else matters.

InveterateWineDrinker · 09/09/2026 00:14

You don't 'absolutely need' Sky at all, never mind the ability to record it.

Just cancel. It's the only way these fuckers learn.

ditavonteesed · 09/09/2026 07:18

I’m free. They gave me a number to call resolutions team and the bloke was lovely but very much too little too late. why do companies do this surely they won’t have any customers left soon.
Cancelled the whole thing will finish on the exact day my contract ends. They tried to say I’ll call you back and I very politely told them I would like to never speak to anyone from their company again.

I had the same when I switched from BT to Community Fibre for my broadband and TV. I was paying £60pcm for broadband with BT and an additional £30pcm for BT tv which included TNT Sports. I now pay £20 a month for broadband, and get sky sports via now tv for£21 pcm. We bought a freeview box so we can record pause etc

Overthemoun · 09/09/2026 07:33

DH cancelled. I called and reordered as a new customer to start when his notice ended. Got a new customer voucher too. Very easy after he’d spent ages negotiating unsuccessfully. They didn’t care!

Forton26 · 10/09/2026 06:13

I didn’t realise so many people still used sky. We just alternate streaming channels. You can have many for £130 a month.

Now tv can provide sky sports much cheaper if you need that. I didn’t realise people still ‘recorded’ either though. But sky has always been a rip off unless you got a deal.

Bjorkdidit · 10/09/2026 06:59

Lots of people must still be getting Sky as they're still in business, although I'm not sure why.

I've seen a lot of 'I need to be able to record' but I don't understand why if you have decent broadband, which doesn't have to be expensive (always get a deal on that too). On the rare occasion the broadband is off, just do something else. If having no broadband would be a disaster maybe keep a few DVDs in.

Just doesn't seem worth paying 5/10 times more for a very similar service where you're also committed for a year or more when you can just chop ad change month to month.

Morepositivemum · 10/09/2026 07:02

We rang once and told someone we wanted to cancel and they lowered it hugely. Mother in law rang to do the same the next day and they put her into the cancellation team 😅

somanychristmaslights · 10/09/2026 07:07

We moved from Sky onto EE TV. Same channels, but much cheaper. Don’t get HBO max though which is a shame.
