£100 for salad and dog food

Realscottishhaggis · 07/03/2026 13:59

I got some salad bits, fruit, dog food which was only £10, cheap veg, pack of mince, milk and yogurt well that’s £100 rounded up gone, on what was essentially a top up shop. Yes it’s my fault for buying £5 blueberries, I know there’s frozen but it’s not as nice and nothing should be so expensive anyway. if it’s this expensive to be healthy I’m not surprised hardly anyone does it.
I am only venting as I’m aware I have bought expensive food just saying I don’t think it should be expensive

Was there at least a bottle of gin or a few bottles of wine in there? Crazy money 😂 💰

BIWI · 07/03/2026 14:02

Where were you paying £5 for blueberries?! In Sainsbury's the most expensive is £3.10.

ilovepixie · 07/03/2026 14:04

How much fruit and salad did you buy though?

AllDreamsLost · 07/03/2026 14:05

That does sound a lot, I commiserate. I remember watching a friend do a £100 shop years ago and being bewildered. Whereas nowadays we all might pay that much!

On the blueberry front, if you can please consider trying to buy seasonal and local (within reason) as all the shipping and food waste is just not great for the environment.

Frozen is a great alternative to that :) Sorry it's a separate discussion, but one I'm really passionate about. It helps with cost too.

DollopOfFun · 07/03/2026 14:05

I spend a fortune on groceries, so I'm definitely not here to give budgeting tips, but even I can't get to £100 on what you've said there 🤔

Upsetbetty · 07/03/2026 14:07

Nor me.

£90 on salad, fruit, one pack of mince. milk and yogurt?

notmuchtoit · 07/03/2026 14:10

I spent 56 quid in Tesco this morning and bought more than that. That included some salad, veg,a chicken, cat food and various other bits.

LoudPlumDog · 07/03/2026 14:12

Lots of people are eating healthy, I’m not sure who you are talking about? I buy organic and fresh as much as possible.

Sainsbury's blueberries are £4.50 in their large supermarket in Leeds

OK fair enough - I was going by their online prices.

Meadowfinch · 07/03/2026 14:22

I've just got back from Tesco. It didn't seem that expensive.

I bought potatoes, leeks, broccoli, pears, satsumas, sultanas, salad, organic milk, wraps, pork mince, beef mince, cod fillets, chicken legs, chorizo, frozen peas & sweetcorn, cereal bars, biscuits, lemon barley water, pizza, garlic bread, £48 seemed ok.

Do you buy brands OP? Try avoiding them. It makes a huge difference.

AcceptableAtADanceInvaluableInAShipwreck · 07/03/2026 14:22

"nothing should be so expensive anyway"

I disagree. I think out of season, out of region fruits, berries and vegetables definitely should have this reflected in the price. Remember air miles?

Davros · 07/03/2026 14:22

I just spent £52 in M&S and got some fresh vegetables and herbs, small pack of sushi, whole chicken, sirloin steak, sausages, chicken gravy, ready made sandwich and a few more bits. Bugger! I forgot the biscuits!

Realscottishhaggis · 07/03/2026 14:28

I know why it is it’s because I’ve bought things like berries and a lot of it and a lot of salad I’m just saying it’s a shame it’s so expensive as it should be more accessible to everyone

we really need to know how much of everything to judge though.

Fruit and veg are accessible to everyone. But if you live on an island with inclement weather and want fruit, salad and veg out of season, it'll cost more.

Oneandanotheroneistwo · 07/03/2026 14:37

Really? I spend that on a weeks groceries for 4 of us (granted one is a toddler so doesn't eat much) but includes nappies and formula until recently. Cooking mainly from scratch, not much salad but lots of fruit and veg. If you buy a lot of anything it will be expensive.

CeciliaMars · 07/03/2026 14:38

Go to Aldi or Lidl.

Bjorkdidit · 07/03/2026 14:42

Who do you think should work for nothing so you can have cheap out of season air freighted fruit?

Yesterday I got a massive cabbage, kilo of carrots and a cauliflower for about £2, just those items filled a carrier bag. With the potatoes and onions I already have, along with lettuce and cucumber, cheap spices and pulses, I can make a load of lovely meals for next to nothing.

Even adding some eggs and pork steaks doesn't bump the price up to anywhere near £100 even with blueberries. What is it with MN and blueberries?

If you want to spend less on food, don't buy the most expensive types available.

MmeWorthington · 07/03/2026 14:43

So, rough prices on the generous side:

'salad bits'
Twin pack baby Gem - £1
Bag of watercress - £1-35
Bag of other leaves £1-50

Spring onions - 79p
Heritage organic vine tomatoes £5

Fruit
Blueberries - £5
Bananas £1
Apples £1-80
Oranges £2

Cheap Veg

Yogurt
Big pot of Greek Yog £3

Show us your workings, OP!

The COLC is bad but not that bad!

LilyBunch25 · 07/03/2026 14:45

Sorry but I'm really confused. What you've listed just doesn't hit £100 or anywhere near...can you list everything with prices else its just a bit of a strange post.

corblimeyguvnr · 07/03/2026 14:45

Is it an MN massive salad?
