£100 for salad and dog food

Realscottishhaggis · 07/03/2026 13:59

I got some salad bits, fruit, dog food which was only £10, cheap veg, pack of mince, milk and yogurt well that’s £100 rounded up gone, on what was essentially a top up shop. Yes it’s my fault for buying £5 blueberries, I know there’s frozen but it’s not as nice and nothing should be so expensive anyway. if it’s this expensive to be healthy I’m not surprised hardly anyone does it.
I am only venting as I’m aware I have bought expensive food just saying I don’t think it should be expensive

I popped into Tesco for milk, hand soap & pomegranates
£60

2 x large Greek yoghurt
1 x large milk
butter
spring onions
broccoli
2 x mango
lemons
chia pudding powder
herbal tea
bananas

no pomegranate 🙄😭
and I forgot the soap

How's that come to £60?! I totted it up in my head, based on my regular shops in Lidl and can't get above £35, even if the butter is Lurpak and chia pudding (no idea) is £10!

DH did refuse to go to Tesco with me becuase id walk round going how much?!

I went to Lidl just for bread this morning and had to go back for the bread 🤣

I really hate threads like these the op never posts reciept and conviently forgets the bottle of vodka, box of lindt, expensive shampoo. I work in a shop and the amount of people who will buy a basket of shopping with spirits, steak, make up etc and then moan about the price and say I would of got a trolley full in aldi for that. Well yeah because in your trolley shop you are probably buying milk, eggs, bread, pasta, tins of beans etc

It doesn’t include steak or alcohol it includes literally what I’ve said I can’t be bothered going through the list but it is genuinely just milk yogurt salad bits fruit and a pack of mince albeit a lot of it

Where I am branded butter £7 milk £4 the herbal tea nice stuff £4.50-£6.50, yogurt could easily be £4 a tub if branded, mango couple of quid, no this isn’t my list it’s the other persons I can well believe it, I don’t know about the other stuff though

These are ridiculous prices. You need to find a cheaper shop… I’m in central London and those prices are double what we pay here.

Realscottishhaggis · 07/03/2026 15:19

My local tescos is more expensive clearly then its a vent as I know there’s cheaper options they’re just not as nice and you should be able to eat berries I admit I’m clueless about what is out of season or not most of this total was fruit which was maybe half of the £80 since £10 was on dog food salad was the rest, the prices given here are less than my local Tesco but this was just to vent as I’m aware I was buying the Moses expensive options

But why "should" people be able to eat berries?

There is quite an entitlement there, in expecting to be able to eat fresh berries, for what? cheaper than it costs to have people grow them, pick them and then transported to UK?

£4 for milk is it coming from a famous cow 🐄

Bjorkdidit · 07/03/2026 15:44

I'd be surprised if butter costs £7 in a wanky farm shop made from organic milk by the light of a full moon so where are you where its supposedly £7 from a supermarket?

HollyhockDays · 07/03/2026 15:44

But how much fruit did you get? Blueberries and two bananas or that plus plus plus?? Same with “salad” bag of lettuce or tomato and cucumber and avocado and red onion and scallions etc?

I'm sure it's possible, but it's not possible where I shop (Lidl)

Realscottishhaggis · 07/03/2026 14:28

I know why it is it’s because I’ve bought things like berries and a lot of it and a lot of salad I’m just saying it’s a shame it’s so expensive as it should be more accessible to everyone

Berries are always expensive out of season
Apples, pears, oranges, bananas and grapes are all much cheaper

Your choice, its not rocket science if you buy lots of expensive fruit and salad it will cost you more Confused

FlowerFairyDaisy · 07/03/2026 15:49

Ridiculous.

A box of dog food and a bag of salad doesn’t cost £100 anywhere so obviously you’re bought £100 worth of dog food and salad ‘bits.’

murasaki · 07/03/2026 15:50

I still can't make the shopping list add up, even if she'd gone to Harrods Food Hall.

HelenaWilson · 07/03/2026 15:58

I admit I’m clueless about what is out of season or not

At this time of year, in the UK, nearly everything is out of season. Fruit and salad veg don't grow in winter, unless in glasshouses or polytunnels with artificial heat and light. Look up 'winter vegetables' if you want to know what home grown veg you should be able to get.

Things like apples and root veg are harvested at, well harvest time, and stored for the winter though.

sharkstale · 07/03/2026 16:10

Yep just popped into Sainsbury's for a few bits and spent £72 🤯

Nourishinghandcream · 07/03/2026 16:13

BIWI · 07/03/2026 14:02

Where were you paying £5 for blueberries?! In Sainsbury's the most expensive is £3.10.

In Sainsbury's, 500g of BB are £4.55.
We buy them weekly.

I don't think dog food is healthy. Maybe think of changing your diet and buying chicken instead (1kg of chicken legs for £2 in Aldi, with nectar £1.80 in Sainsburys).

I forgot to list:
dozen eggs
sliced tiger bread
crocodile stick (French stick)
and a jar of stem ginger in syrup- my treat of the week £2.65

HugoThatway · 07/03/2026 16:39

Fast5 · 07/03/2026 14:45

I've been to Lidl three times this week and spent £23 total.

You can eat "healthily" without buying £5 blueberries and bagged salads.

Is this why people are saying that fresh food is unaffordable?

rainbowsandraspberrygin · 07/03/2026 16:44

So you spent £40 on fruit??

I think you need to upload the receipt. Yes stuff is expensive but to reach £100 on some salad and fruit is mad unless you’re having a salad/fruit party for 50 people

BillieWiper · 07/03/2026 16:46

Blueberries are a minefield. Each one has a 50% chance of being tasteless and soggy regardless of it's packet-mates or appearance or price.
I actually get angry with them. And a fiver?! From Tesco's! I thought you might've been to fancy farm shop or something. I guess I barely buy fruit which isn't great in itself.

manateeplushie · 07/03/2026 16:49

huh? I did my weekly shop yesterday and it came in at £35!

Coconutter24 · 07/03/2026 17:11

WildMintPanda · 07/03/2026 14:09

Nor me.

£90 on salad, fruit, one pack of mince. milk and yogurt?

Don’t forget the dog food! Lol

manateeplushie · 07/03/2026 16:49

What do you call a weekly shop? Like how many people do you buy for and which shop?

Terrribletwos · 07/03/2026 17:16

Realscottishhaggis · 07/03/2026 14:00

Tescos which is a normal shop

@Realscottishhaggis well I wouldn't bother with the blueberries as they are expensive and taste of nothing. I do like the Sainsburys orange taste the difference.
