£100 for salad and dog food

Realscottishhaggis · 07/03/2026 13:59

I got some salad bits, fruit, dog food which was only £10, cheap veg, pack of mince, milk and yogurt well that’s £100 rounded up gone, on what was essentially a top up shop. Yes it’s my fault for buying £5 blueberries, I know there’s frozen but it’s not as nice and nothing should be so expensive anyway. if it’s this expensive to be healthy I’m not surprised hardly anyone does it.
I am only venting as I’m aware I have bought expensive food just saying I don’t think it should be expensive

I've been to Lidl three times this week and spent £23 total.

You can eat "healthily" without buying £5 blueberries and bagged salads.

YourWinter · 07/03/2026 14:47

That doesn’t make sense. Mine only pushes over £60 if I’m buying a big box of cat food pouches and cat litter and their dry food, I usually spend around £40-£50 if not including the cats. You can’t buy much salad and expect it to last longer than a week. I also buy nice blueberries, knowing they’re imported, because the season for British ones is so very short. I don’t buy imported raspberries or strawberries, I buy only British meat, and some (though not exclusively) organic food.

I know why it is it’s because I’ve bought things like berries and a lot of it and a lot of salad I’m just saying it’s a shame it’s so expensive as it should be more accessible to everyone

But you bought expensive, out of season fruit.

Had you gone with seasonal fruits then it would have been a lot cheaper. And there are cheaper options for berries such as frozen, which you just didn't want.

So fruit and veg is accessible, just not the ones you wanted

tutugogo · 07/03/2026 14:49

I bought a full weeks shop (for 2 people) for £49
in lidl this morning, including blueberries and salad. It’s down to choices, some things cost more. My mince was just under £5 grass fed.

Bjorkdidit · 07/03/2026 14:49

It's just another of those tiresome 'MN poor' as in I can no longer afford to buy the most expensive version of everything without thinking any more posts.

A massive insult to those of us who have been actually poor and had to make a small amount of money stretch further than humanly possible and question every purchase so don't feel entitled to cheap blueberries.

I don’t understand, what is it you think should be more accessible? Blueberries? They are always expensive or of season. There’s plenty of veg, fruit and salad available that’s cheaper. Carrots, potatoes, sweet potatoes, broccoli, cabbage, cucumber, tomatoes, lettuce all cheap and good in salads. Lots of cheap fruit too like apples, bananas, satsumas.

cupfinalchaos · 07/03/2026 14:50

If you have one near you, I reckon the Arab/turkish greengrocers that display all their fruit & veg outside might be the way to go.. usually cheaper than Tescos.

I agree. And it's cost effective anyway, if I only need one of a thing for a recipe, I can buy one not a pack of 3. I love our local Turkish veg shop. Great bread, too.

SparrowFeet · 07/03/2026 14:57

You're being ridiculous. You've just bought loads of out of season items. Try going back in summer and actually picking the UK produced stuff if you're wanting a trolley full of blueberries.

Mumof2wifeof1crazytimes · 07/03/2026 15:03

Without saying what you bought and how much it is impossible to agree or disagree. What you have said you bought does not add up to £100 so you have either been overcharged or you bought a lot more items.

Blondeshavemorefun · 07/03/2026 15:07

How much fruit - berries are costly

GoldenCupsatHarvestTime · 07/03/2026 15:10

Shop elsewhere then… I spent £35 today at Aldi and got:

3x bags of salad
2 x aubergine
2 packs cucumber
1kg sweet potato
500g Greek yoghurt
Chicken drum fillets
2 salmon fillets
200g King prawns
1 Soya milk
2 bags coffee beans
400g cheddar cheese
5 avocados
6 golden yolk eggs

LoseAllOfYourMoney · 07/03/2026 15:10

You obviously bought a lot of each of those things if they are all you got for £100. What exactly did you buy?

Fast5 · 07/03/2026 15:12

Just checking you realise Tesco Express or Tesco Local is a lot more expensive than their main stores?

ifonly4 · 07/03/2026 15:15

Seems like a lot. How does this breakdown in terms of how much you bought of each item and how much it was? What I'd guess would be a good top up sum of those goods for us, would come to around £30-35 in our Tescos, but obviously you may have a much bigger family/dietary requirements

TheCurious0range · 07/03/2026 15:18

OP is making the biggest salad ever known to Mumsnet

Realscottishhaggis · 07/03/2026 15:19

My local tescos is more expensive clearly then its a vent as I know there’s cheaper options they’re just not as nice and you should be able to eat berries I admit I’m clueless about what is out of season or not most of this total was fruit which was maybe half of the £80 since £10 was on dog food salad was the rest, the prices given here are less than my local Tesco but this was just to vent as I’m aware I was buying the Moses expensive options

OP posts:
MmeWorthington · 07/03/2026 15:24

So you bought 8 packs of blueberries?

FlatErica · 07/03/2026 15:25

You shouldn’t be able to eat whatever you like without paying the true cost of the production of that food. If that’s what out of season fruit costs and you’re just buying it because it’s “nicer” then i’m not sure what to say. Do you really not know about agriculture and supply chains?

HeddaGarbled · 07/03/2026 15:27

No way would a normal amount of what you describe come to £100 at Tesco. I get my whole week’s food and household shop for that. There’s something you haven’t told us.

Fast5 · 07/03/2026 15:28

So you bought luxuries in a convenience store and then wonder why it's expensive?

RobinEllacotStrike · 07/03/2026 15:29

I popped into Tesco for milk, hand soap & pomegranates
£60

2 x large Greek yoghurt
1 x large milk
butter
spring onions
broccoli
2 x mango
lemons
chia pudding powder
herbal tea
bananas

no pomegranate 🙄😭
and I forgot the soap

youalright · 07/03/2026 15:30

I really hate threads like these the op never posts reciept and conviently forgets the bottle of vodka, box of lindt, expensive shampoo. I work in a shop and the amount of people who will buy a basket of shopping with spirits, steak, make up etc and then moan about the price and say I would of got a trolley full in aldi for that. Well yeah because in your trolley shop you are probably buying milk, eggs, bread, pasta, tins of beans etc

HugoThatway · 07/03/2026 15:30

corblimeyguvnr · 07/03/2026 14:45

Is it an MN massive salad?

Obviously.

HugoThatway · 07/03/2026 15:33

It was the manna, @Realscottishhaggis . Moses's tastes are beyond your budget.
