Hi
I am a cleaner
Most of my cleaning jobs are fine. I do an hours work, and then talk to the office staff for the next hour. Everyone is friendly and I get Xmas gifts for my "hard" work
But you know, I do get minimum wage for minimum work right? which barely pays the bills. But I get a job, appreciation, communication and gifts in return.
But I work at this one company which I am going to quit, because it isn't worth the hassle. They have had many cleaners before me (all have which have quit after 2 weeks)
I just don't understand a professional company who goes on team building courses to miss a basic principle!
They should realize I am a cleaner who basically gets paid bad income, but they expect high expectations? It doesn't make sense. They don't talk! No Xmas presents from them? No thanks for your hard work? Obviously I am not going to continue this silly job, with no rewards for myself.
But considering they put all this time in to team work/ course work to benefit the team, they forget cleaner? Who they expect high performance but will not do it because of low pay? How thick can a company be!
I am a cleaner who accepts minimum wage so I can socialise at work , read my book and do a bit of cleaning in between obviously. Pay me more if you want more lol
I don't mean to be a bad person, but don't you get what you pay for in life? I am on minimum wage which makes me poor, so why should I try hard in a job, which probably makes thousands? Why not pay me extra so I work harder and can feed family?
The company is horrible, they can't even be bothered to try to manipulate me at Xmas with a box of chocolates! Fuck that, I would rather be sacked

OMG you just said I am committing fraud, I am so scared 😆😂😂

Technically it is fraud. I’m surprised the client company hasn’t raised it.

Eviebeans · 01/01/2026 08:18

May I ask how much you are paid per hour

cool

Nutmuncher · 01/01/2026 08:26

I’d say you earn a good amount for the quality of work you’re admitting to doing.

Overthebow · 01/01/2026 07:12

Who are you talking to in the office? Are you distracting other employees from their work?

yeah well one of them got sacked, which i am sad about.

Well, I don't think they would raise it as they don't know. My "talker" is an accountant in an office, all by herself. It is just me and her in an office, for hours.
I empty her bins everyday (or pretend to) and give her conversation.
She is the talker though.

Op I kind of get what you’re thinking in a way, and actually in my work (retail), the cleaners chat to all of us as well but still do an amazing job. I hate your analogy about if you pay for cheap beans- I am on a minimum wage job, I don’t say well it doesn’t matter how I do my job because they pay me so little and I always tell my kids the same- no matter what you do you give the quality you would expect if you were being served. And no matter what you get paid.

DinoLil · 01/01/2026 08:40

This has to be a joke! No one would seriously complain about not getting a pack of biscuits in appreciation for work they don't actually carry out.

Very good OP. Now, off you trot...

zsbcghy · 01/01/2026 08:42

But even if i wanted to do a good job as a cleaner, Seriously, people respect me, in offices. I have has bosses coming up to me and thanking me for being part of the team. And it is not because I do any work (OK I do some work) seriously I mop, brush, clean. but mostly I talk. Sorry but I find chatty people, I empty their bins, start a convo and they can't help themselves! I am suddenly theirs for an hour!

all the cleaners were i have worked have been really chatty tbf but i tend to leave, my day ends pretty much when they arrive.

zsbcghy · 01/01/2026 08:45

They are just as bad as me though right? I know people say fraud, but what would make me care?

I find this attitude so strange, you're basically saying: "if they want me to do my actual job they need to buy me gifts and pay me more". Yet you do the least work in the office that do give you gifts? You were aware of the pay when you took the job, surely?

I've been a minimum wage cleaner and I've never encountered anyone with this entitled attitude, I've certainly never met anyone who was so lazy they only worked half of their shift!

You can't expect chit chat and gifts, I'm an electrician, some customers chat away, make you a cuppa or offer a sandwich - some regulars drop off a card or bottle of wine at Christmas.

Others, say nothing, you get on and get paid - but the latter is the essence of what I do, I'm not there for socialisation or gifts, I'm not going to turn away a tin of quality street or a cup of coffee, but its not expected by any means.

caringcarer · 01/01/2026 09:55

If you are chatting and reading your book you are not doing the work you are being paid for. You sound a dreadful employee and I wouldn't pay you more. Most people get rewarded more after they have worked hard not sat about reading their book.

RudolphTheReindeer · 01/01/2026 13:31

Well I'm glad other people on minimum/low wage don't see it as a reason to do a shit job. Imagine if all the hospital cleaners, binmen, nursery workers, carers, other support staff had your attitude. Why are you charging/they paying you for two hours work if you're only doing one? This must be a wind up.

grinchmcgrinchface · 01/01/2026 13:34

so you stand around chatting most of the time yet expect extras? Your lucky they still employ you.

Boomer55 · 01/01/2026 16:50

Well, I had a lot of jobs over the years, back in the day. I accepted the wages etc and did the best job I could.🤷‍♀️

If you want a more personal relationship, as a cleaner, you might be better working for families. Office cleaners are often seen as “invisible”.

But, as you don’t seem to be even working to your contract, I’m not sure why you’d expect extras. 🤔 Plus, if you were working for families, they would probably expect more from you. 🙄👍

Sunnyside4 · 03/01/2026 07:40

Sadly there are many employers out there who require every once of what you can do very little for minimal pay, there aren't gifts and if you're caught chatting, you'll be given another job.

wornoutjeans · 03/01/2026 09:05

Are you self employed? I am and I choose who I work for . Also I’m professional and don’t spend an hour chatting to people , I’m friendly and polite but I have my work to do and they have there life to get on with

SandrenaIsMyBloodType · 03/01/2026 09:26

Minimum wage doesn’t mean “minimum work”. It means minimum qualifications required to do the work. Cleaning is a skill. It’s hard work and not everyone can do it well and so good cleaners can command more than minimum wage. You don’t work hard and you don’t do a good job so you can’t expect much from your employers.
I’m not taking your post particularly seriously. I think you came here to wind people up (which you are managing to do pretty well).

LIZS · 03/01/2026 09:46

This has to be a wind up! Whatever you are paid if it is for two hours you work two hours, not expect to sit and chat for half the time. Why would you be included in team building etc if SE?

BohoGarden · 03/01/2026 09:59

zsbcghy · 01/01/2026 08:45

They are just as bad as me though right? I know people say fraud, but what would make me care?

Personal pride? The satisfaction of a job well done?
The hope that someone will notice what a hard worker you are and promote you/offer you a job with better pay?
Because you don't want to get to the end of the day and think, "Well, I did a shit job today and wasted hours chatting rubbish with people I don't know - that's a day wasted."

herbetta · 03/01/2026 10:35

zsbcghy · 01/01/2026 07:33

I don't mean to be horrible people, I love work, but surely you agree you get what u pay for. Sorry if that is perceived that I have no work ethic. But I think the company has no work ethic, not me. Sorry , but I need to be appreciated in my job, especially if I am on minimum wage, you can't expect maximum work in minimum wage. Life doesn't work like that

But surely you do a good job & work during the hours you are employed - if you stay and are better than previous cleaners then you could ask for a pay rise, or then feedback and leave. If you do minimum work then how will you get a good reference to improve your pay and position?

I always work efficiently and to a high standard whoever employs me and for whatever wage (including NMW cleaning jobs). It has always been recognised and appreciated, but I don't need gifts for that. Because of my work ethics I know how valuable I am to employers.

XenoBitch · 08/01/2026 17:39

This is a weird thread.

I used to clean offices, and I had to be in and out during a set time.
I also never got gifts of any kind from the people working in the office. They were not my employer, and they were not my colleagues. They didn't even know my name.
If you don't like where you work, then find another job. But expecting to spend half your shift chatting and reading (and expecting to be paid for that), and wanting gifts just seems entitled and strange to me.
