cleaning

Hi
I am a cleaner
Most of my cleaning jobs are fine. I do an hours work, and then talk to the office staff for the next hour. Everyone is friendly and I get Xmas gifts for my "hard" work
But you know, I do get minimum wage for minimum work right? which barely pays the bills. But I get a job, appreciation, communication and gifts in return.
But I work at this one company which I am going to quit, because it isn't worth the hassle. They have had many cleaners before me (all have which have quit after 2 weeks)
I just don't understand a professional company who goes on team building courses to miss a basic principle!
They should realize I am a cleaner who basically gets paid bad income, but they expect high expectations? It doesn't make sense. They don't talk! No Xmas presents from them? No thanks for your hard work? Obviously I am not going to continue this silly job, with no rewards for myself.
But considering they put all this time in to team work/ course work to benefit the team, they forget cleaner? Who they expect high performance but will not do it because of low pay? How thick can a company be!
I am a cleaner who accepts minimum wage so I can socialise at work , read my book and do a bit of cleaning in between obviously. Pay me more if you want more lol
I don't mean to be a bad person, but don't you get what you pay for in life? I am on minimum wage which makes me poor, so why should I try hard in a job, which probably makes thousands? Why not pay me extra so I work harder and can feed family?
The company is horrible, they can't even be bothered to try to manipulate me at Xmas with a box of chocolates! Fuck that, I would rather be sacked

So the company is in the wrong because they don’t want to pay you to chat , just to get on and clean ? They are paying you to clean? What courses do you think they should pay for you to do? You want thanks for working hard when you don’t ?

Mymanyellow · 08/01/2026 17:47

You give the rest of minimum wage earners a bad name. I’m a carer , although I’m not on minimum, not much over though, and I can assure you me and all my colleagues work bloody hard.

Primaris · 08/01/2026 17:49

If you can pick and choose your clients it makes sense that you would choose the one that requires the least effort for the wages available.

If the client can pick and choose a cleaner it makes sense that they would choose one who puts in the greatest effort for the least wages.

Basic economics.

You better pull yourself together and start doing what you're paid for...and that's not chatting....it will only take 1 complaint and the business will look into it, also with CCTV around you will be caught in the act of not doing much....

Sorry but if you want a job done properly then pay me properly. Most of you start moaning that "oh no I am unemployed" "what a waste of space" "relying on benefits"
Yet I am not on benefits , but still moan because I am on minimum wage so will do minimum work! Can't win!

Why don’t you negotiate a rate you’re happy with before starting the job then?

I don't mean to be horrible people, I love work, but surely you agree you get what u pay for. Sorry if that is perceived that I have no work ethic. But I think the company has no work ethic, not me. Sorry , but I need to be appreciated in my job, especially if I am on minimum wage, you can't expect maximum work in minimum wage. Life doesn't work like that

Yes it does. Some jobs are minimum wage, the employer still wants the job doing.
Most firms wouldn’t take the cleaner on a team building exercise.
You are still expected to work , if you want more money , get a better job. Why are you cleaning if you think you’re better than that ?
What qualifications do you have ?
By the way , you can’t just ‘go on benefits’ and by saying that you’re giving genuine claimants a bad name.

You’d probably still complain if they deducted an hours wage from you so only paid you for 1 hour out of the 2 you work because you’re spending your time socialising!!

As a pp mentioned as a cleaner surely you must be self employed so why would you only charge the min wage when most commercial cleaners charge at least double that?

If that’s all you’re charging, then you can’t very well blame it on them, then do half a job to try to ‘correct’ it and then moan you don’t get chocolates! You’re responsible for setting your rate and for proving yourself to be worth it to them!

If you were in demand surely you’d be charging a proper rate and taking responsibility for providing a good standard of service, not shirking off and complaining about no presents!

It makes absolutely no sense to do what you’re doing! I would advise a complete change of attitude and start taking some responsibility for yourself and your work, then and only then will you be worth the top rates you’d prefer to charge!

OP said she is employed by cleaning companies. They will be the ones setting her wage, and that will be what the company whose office she is cleaning is happy to pay.

DM has a cleaning company, and her staff's wages depends on where they work. Some are on NMW, some are on £1ph more.

Ah ok, I got confused then because I saw that she was working at several different job sites so I assumed they were her own clients and she was doing all the behind the scenes work as well as the cleaning.

Ok I realise that she can’t set the rate of pay, but the company she works for will be working hard to find and manage these clients and she should represent them properly with the agreed hours or the clients will notice at some point that she’s ripped them off and then surely they will ask for a different cleaner, and then of course, the cleaning company will find out and may not feel able to trust her with any more work.

It’s got so much potential to backfire if she carries on this way (in any job situation actually) people aren’t blind, it’ll all come out at some point!

MrFluffyDogIsMyBestFriend · 29/01/2026 16:39

Why are you working for minimum wage? @EleanorReally a cleaner should receive more than minimum wage because it's hard work if done to a good standard. But the going rate for a domestic cleaner is now around £!8 an hour depending on area.

So OP why aren't you looking for your own jobs? I mean, I wouldn't employ you but there's no need to be working for minimum wage and offices/shops are hard work because of the large floor space and the emphasis on vaccuming.

yeah, i appreciate that people in other jobs don't get Xmas presents (even though they should) everyone should be appreciated.
I just meant that I work for 3 cleaning companies and two of the cleaning companies gave me gifts.
The one that didn't was the one with high expectations with minimum wage, communications and worth, yet they gave each other Xmas presents, like beers, chocolates and wine! which I had to experience, and I found disgusting that they couldn't even give me a bar of chocolate to say thanks for the hard work.
But u know I am just here to complain right? Not ruined my life! I am here to rant! And leaving company soon! lol not the end of world

Perhaps they didn't thank you for the hard work because they haven't seen any hard work?

I work in care now and I have worked in retail, housing support, family support, admin etc - I take pride in every job I do and try to do it well - including cleaning the bogs in my current job.

Perhaps if you had a different attitude you could be going for your own cleaning contracts getting work through brilliant word of mouth recommendations and earning a lot more. Rather than being given gifts you are lucky they haven't asked you not to come back.

Zanatdy · 04/02/2026 05:50

You’re the one who accepts the jobs for whatever they are paying you. You don’t take a job and decide to do a mediocre job as you don’t feel that you’re paid enough. Well people do, but terrible work ethic. As I regularly say to people, if you’re not happy in your job or your salary, you have options. Complaining about it achieves nothing.

CeciliaMars · 04/02/2026 06:24

There’s a difference between working the hardest you can can and minimum effort. Do you think those people in higher paid jobs only really started working hard when their pay got good? I’m a teacher. Never gonna be rich. But I’ve had jobs since I was 13 and I’ve worked as hard as I can in every single day of my life.
I do agree however that people should be polite to you of course. Try your best in everything and find a job you actually like.
