What is your water bill?

I realise this has likely be done to death but how much do you spend per person, per month or how many litres do you use?

Its just DH and myself. We both WFH so are here ALL day though. I do 1 load of wash and 1 load in the dishwasher per week (on average). We have a 5000litre tank buried in the garden which takes all water from the roof, so very rarely use the mains water outside. We don't wash the car and always have showers.

Today's bill is £307 for 6mths. The companies home page says we use 173L each per day, but on the bill its 128L each. Its £26 a month each- which doesn't sound too much, but they say we are using above average for 2 people. Are we? What do you pay?

I’m in the Us and for three people we pay $125 US which if I googled correctly is about £93 British?? It’s quite a bit more in the summer as we live in a desert area. Almost no lawn whatsoever. We grow some of our vegs.

Per month?

Sbmpp · 10/12/2025 00:45

So sorry. Yes, per month but more in the summer months when the temps are 100 f (is that about 37c?).

Whywhywhyyyy · 10/12/2025 00:47

£1400 a year on meter. Turns out it’s been leaking at the meter for 4 years!!!!

Which water company?

mines Yorkshire water

Bromptotoo · 10/12/2025 12:33

May have already added this but we pay about £400/pa for two of us in a 4 bed with metered supply from Anglian Water.

Meter recently replaced with a smart one reporting consumption by the hour. Left a tap dripping for a week while on holiday and they were on us pretty quickly as they thought we had a leak.

Boomer55 · 10/12/2025 16:44

Widow in a 2 bed flat in Thames Water area. Metered. It’s just gone up £10 per month to £51 per month. 🙄

Sbmpp · 10/12/2025 21:49

@Whywhywhyyyy What is the meter for? Do you have it for electric too and are you allotted a certain amount per month? Do you put coins in it or your debit card? I have read this on MN several times but don’t understand.

For electric everyone has a meter. That’s either pay as you go or traditional where you pay monthly or quarterly by submitting the readings.

With water the standard is a flat rate charge and unlimited unmonitored use. With a meter you are being charged the amount you use. We get a bill for that 6 monthly and the meter is either read by someone who visits or it’s a smart meter which sends the data automatically.

@Whywhywhyyyy Thank you so much. I googled this and asked about the coins. I found out that there are some really old meters where people put in coins or tokens and some you have a place where you can prepay? Actually in our part of the US we have meters to gauge usage depending on the utility (and then a multitude of taxes and fees are added to the bill). Some areas are bundled. And so on. I am fascinated by life in the UK :).

Yeah it’s awful. I don’t understand how these work as never been on one. But yes low income people who the utility companies doesn’t trust to pay have to have a prepay. So you go to the shops to buy electricity/gas and then come home with something that you put in the meter. I don’t understand it fully but it sounds awful! Bad enough running out of milk. WTF to the lights or heat running out. Criminal really. Shouldn’t be allowed.

everdine · 11/12/2025 19:10

£51 per month, no metre, 2 adults (although DH is away a lot with work) and two children.

MikeRafone · 11/12/2025 19:34

im paying £37 per month for 2 people, but think the water company have go the price set higher than needed.

I am now giving them monthly readings so they can adjust the monthly cost

Sbmpp · 11/12/2025 20:16

@Whywhywhyyyy Yes I caught that part. I also read that some of the poor end up paying higher rates for their utilities too. There’s something truly wrong about that. We are billed for the previous month. If a person gets behind in payments their water, trash etc gets turned off.

ilovepixie · 11/12/2025 20:27

We don’t pay for our water in Northern Ireland, it’s included in our rates.

Yeah they do. Much higher I believe. Horrendous

northernballer · 12/12/2025 18:44

Jesus we pay £280 per month!!

There are 5 of us, all sporty so often have two showers a day and lots of washing. Cheapest I can get it down to is £5 per day on a washing day its nearly £7.

Some of it is a debt as we moved last year and they kept us on our old unmetered rate of £79 per month when our use is about £150 but dear God the cost is crippling.

SandyLanes · 23/11/2025 10:29

I live alone but partner here a couple of times a week. Dishwasher (small one) on most days as I cook from scratch and bake, and I like twice daily showers. I got a water meter a few months back and it’s now £29 a month!

Less than £1 a day. Sounds fair.

Sbmpp · 14/12/2025 23:27

@northernballer Whoa!! Ours is close to $500.00 in US dollars (approx £370 pds?) for about 4 months in summer. Then the months vary…about $200/month for the other months. Lots of taxes etc. This is for family of three but sometimes kids from a distance come home for awhile. We wouldn’t mind if they added an extra

eacapade1982 · 15/12/2025 19:36

44/month family of 4 but it’s more than doubled in a few years.

WinoTime · 24/12/2025 09:07

I have just received our new plan for next year.

Yorkshire Water- we are on a meter as it was a lot cheaper than water rates. However despite our usage decreasing - the price is going up - currently on £65 a month, new monthly payment will be £78!

It seems so unfair that there is no choice in this matter. At least with other utilities you can shop around (although there are no real bargains to be had).

Ugh.

WinoTime · 24/12/2025 09:22

Edit - it's gone from £58 - £74 per month .

Quite a jump

whirlyhead · 24/12/2025 11:51

Mallorca - 2 adults and 4 loads of washing a week plus dishwasher maybe 4 times. €30 a month in winter and about €45 in summer as we have a pool. Everyone is in a water meter! We have to pay full VAT on utility bills here too (21%).
