What is your water bill?

I realise this has likely be done to death but how much do you spend per person, per month or how many litres do you use?

Its just DH and myself. We both WFH so are here ALL day though. I do 1 load of wash and 1 load in the dishwasher per week (on average). We have a 5000litre tank buried in the garden which takes all water from the roof, so very rarely use the mains water outside. We don't wash the car and always have showers.

Today's bill is £307 for 6mths. The companies home page says we use 173L each per day, but on the bill its 128L each. Its £26 a month each- which doesn't sound too much, but they say we are using above average for 2 people. Are we? What do you pay?

Wow! You use be doing loads of washing, flushing and showering to have a bill like that!

BiddyPopthe2nd · 09/12/2025 14:59

Just normal washing with full load (2-3 per week), dishwashing (1-2 loads per week plus a sink full most nights), a 3 mins or less shower daily with 1 at 5 mins to wash my hair weekly, about 2 baths/year…

It’s expensive in my city though - and I still have to filter all drinking or cooking water as it’s so hard (full of lime).

Allseeingallknowing · 09/12/2025 14:06

Why? Just Googled. There is a good allowance and even if that is exceeded, it’s capped at £500. Can’t ever see that arrangement here! How can they do that and how do they get the money for sewage and filtration?

Edited

There are no water charges here and I don't know what you mean by capped at £500.

TimetodoEverything · 09/12/2025 15:06

£540 for 6 months just came to through, up 45% (price not usage). 2 adults 2 teens, 1 teen has a bath every morning (and I can’t complain as I’m happy he’s not smelly…)

We've lived here for 20 years and never paid a cent.

I can only think your water supply is paid by some other means? Included in council tax? Something has to be paid to supply domestic water and sewage treatment . Just received my water bill -128.59. Two people, 3 bed house, 2-3 wash loads a week.

CocksBolingey · 09/12/2025 15:25

£56 a month - South West (Bristol Water)
2 person, 3 bed household
No meter as we can't have one
Washing machine on 3-4 times a week
2 showers a day
Dishwasher on once a day.

We don't have council tax either. We pay a small property tax once a year, which goes towards services (not waste collection, we pay for that separately).

Think I’ll move to Ireland!

dailyconniptions · 09/12/2025 15:32

I'm around £30 per month and live alone but I have guinea pigs and wash their bedding a couple of times a week. I notice on the bill though that sewerage makes up a large part of it. Slightly over half in fact. I don't flush after every single wee either.

autumn1610 · 09/12/2025 16:02

Can’t get a water meter fitted so paying wayyyy over. My bill was nearly £700 I phoned up asked for a water meter found out I couldn’t have one. I live on my own so apparently they can offer me a reduced rate of just over £400 a year. I know I’m literally being ripped off but nothing I can do apparently

Which water company?

Which water company?

£400 per year is reasonable

I didn't say it wasn't.

Different companies have, I think, different policies when assessing charges where a meter cannot be fitted. Curious as to which one.

Meadowfinch · 09/12/2025 16:22

There are two of us, shower rather than bathe, use the washing machine & the dish washer more than you. Wash the car from water butts. Last 6 months cost £250. But we had an underground leak for a few weeks that has now been fixed, so I'm hoping usage next 6 months will be less.

Our clean water is from Southern, waste water taken away by Thames.

BoarBrush · 09/12/2025 16:26

Scotland so it's included in our council tax. £466.97 a year.

Tell us your secret. Do you wash your dishes in your bath water, after you have washed your clothes in it?

Wash? What is wash.

you get what you pay for! or don't pay for ;)
The water industry in Ireland is well behind the UK in terms of service standards and regulation.

PuppyMonkey · 09/12/2025 16:47

Just paid £232 for the past six months on water meter. Two DDs moved out in September so it’s just been me and DP since then, but before that, obviously there were four of us. Severn Trent.

Have a dishwasher, washing machine on regularly (not as much without DDs obviously), showers etc.

When we first moved in here 26 years ago, we weren’t on a meter and the bill was about £345 for the year even back then which nearly made us drop dead from shock until they suggested trying a meter instead. Never would go back.

Yes, it's in dire need of updating.

boredwfh · 09/12/2025 17:04

4 adults + 1 child in the house. Dishwasher on 2x a day, 1-2 washes in washing machine. Showers etc. were really high users so after trying a meter for 6 months we decided to go back on rateable charge. Paying £120 per month but I think that included some debt from being on the meter.

Sbmpp · 09/12/2025 17:08

I’m in the Us and for three people we pay $125 US which if I googled correctly is about £93 British?? It’s quite a bit more in the summer as we live in a desert area. Almost no lawn whatsoever. We grow some of our vegs.
