What is your water bill?

JDM625 · 19/11/2025 19:51

I realise this has likely be done to death but how much do you spend per person, per month or how many litres do you use?

Its just DH and myself. We both WFH so are here ALL day though. I do 1 load of wash and 1 load in the dishwasher per week (on average). We have a 5000litre tank buried in the garden which takes all water from the roof, so very rarely use the mains water outside. We don't wash the car and always have showers.

Today's bill is £307 for 6mths. The companies home page says we use 173L each per day, but on the bill its 128L each. Its £26 a month each- which doesn't sound too much, but they say we are using above average for 2 people. Are we? What do you pay?

I pay £23 a month for adult DS and myself - that includes about 4 loads of washing a week.

I think you need a better imagination! By the time I have worn a work uniform with a clean white shirt per 14hr shift, casual clothing, clean underwear and socks each day, sweated in my gym gear, been for a swim, ridden my horses and cleaned them out, had a shower each day using a towel until it pongs a bit, and changed the sheets on my bed when they are similarly pongy - and DH has done the same only instead of horsey clothes he has cricket whites he’s slid along the ground in thrown in for good measure - that’s 4 loads a week. And that’s before I put the horse’s stuff in the washing machine too (but I don’t tell DH I do that!)

I can only imagine you don’t exercise or wash very much, don’t have any hobbies that require different clothing, and if you work it’s in a very clean environment where you don’t wear different clothes to your casual clothes. Or you could just be a bit smelly. Who knows.

Where I live the single biggest consumption of water is the leak from the Thames Water main that runs through my village. In the 20+ years I have lived here there has not been a month where we have not had a water cut while they dig up a different bit of pipe that’s burst. I have a friend who was an accountant to Thames Water once, and she said they work on the premise it is cheaper to be constantly patching leaks for as long as they can than it is to replace a failing main. On paper, this works. It is ever so annoying though when you have 1700 litres of water a day for 4 months undermining the foundations of your property. So yes, while I agree we should be more careful with water, the amount each individual person can save is quite literally just a drop in the ocean compared to the amount the water companies waste by poor management of resources.

That’s really not a very nice response! ‘I imagine you don’t exercise……’ seriously?????

Snippit · 20/11/2025 10:40

I’m with Severn Trent Water paying £32 a month on a water meter. There are two of us living in a 3 bed detached. Washing machine used approximately 4 times a week, we have 3 dogs and have to wash their throws and rub down towels regularly, otherwise they stink. Dishwasher every other day, I love a bath a couple of them times a week, hubby has a shower every day. Use the hose to water the plants in the warmer months.

My sister in law lives in Northern Ireland, they don’t pay for domestic water, I believe it’s owned by the government.

Florencesndzebedee · 20/11/2025 10:42

£56 per month to those robbing bstrds Thames Water. Was £37 a year ago.

lol thanks for the defence! If it were true I might feel a bit seen, but since it couldn’t be further from the truth I thought the poster’s reaction was quite hilarious. So OTT.

RaspberryRipple2 · 20/11/2025 10:57

Wow I’m shocked by some of these prices. We’re on a meter and pay c£300 per 6 months. 4 of us, washing machine and dishwasher both on daily and multiple baths and showers had daily. Water plants in summer and also have an inflatable hot tub that we fill a few times a year. We’re in the midlands.

climbintheback · 20/11/2025 10:57

On a meter 2 of us 2 showers a day 3 laundries a week - retired £23 month

TheWildZebra · 20/11/2025 10:25

That was quite a catty response when I was genuinely just asking 🙃

anyway I’ll take it in good humour… I also horse ride and go to the gym 3x per week. I am astonished you have time after a 14h shift. And the gym. And swimming. And also to do the washing after all that too… where do you get the hours to do that.

I’ve not yet had any comments on my smell, at work or otherwise! I don’t wear a uniform so can cycle through different clothes.

I assure you my underwear is always fresh.

agree with you that TW is a car crash - they’re our provider as well. But two things can be true - needing to value water better and for a complete transformation in how our water is provided by companies/a government service provider.

Again - you need a better imagination! I only do 4-6 work shifts a month. Not every day, silly!

Then it appears to me that perhaps your habit is exaggeration rather than having a very busy life.

how nice it must be to have all the time to do these activities.

Three of us and I run the washing machine pretty much every day, heavy wash for jeans, trousers heavy jumpers high spin, ordinary wash for shirts, tee shirts, night clothes and underwear + odd bits, then towels, tablecloths, tea towels, sheets, pillowcases and duvet covers, and once every so often (summer) bedspreads and curtains. Some days may not be a full load but limited drying space in winter so tend to do what's there even if it's not a full load. I do it on night rate electric, economy cycles and the machine calculates how much water is needed for the wash.

Mine runs very early in the morning then clean washing sorted put to dry while pottering about doing breakfast, so really takes little dedicated time, usually done and dusted by 6:30am.

I’m impressed. Will take notes for if my family grows :)

bugalugs45 · 20/11/2025 11:25

1 load of washing a week! Sorry I’ll try & get past that comment , but my water bill is standing charges and waste water etc so like gas and electric you will be paying a set amount before you even start .

Nigellastwinklylights · 20/11/2025 11:31

Just checked. £91 flippin quid!! I honestly thought it was about £60.

On a meter. Currently 4 adults living here. I hate Southern Water with a vengeance!

TwoOneEyedTigers · 20/11/2025 11:33

We've just received our water bill for the past six months this morning. It's £211.00. According to the meter readings, we've used 34m³ in that time.

It's just me and DH. We're with Southeast Water. We pay £37 a month by direct debit.

ReignOfError · 20/11/2025 11:36

Anglian Water, 2 of us, £26 a month. We both have about 50% of our showers at the gym, so that saves a bit, I guess. Dishwasher 3 - 4 times a week, washing machine 4 times, water butts for rain and grey water, so rarely need water for the garden.

Then you’re not a typical person working full time are so you can’t really compare as your lifestyle is quite different from the majority of people.

perhaps you need a better imagination when considering other people’s lives?

TigerRag · 20/11/2025 13:35

Currently £25 and have been informed it'll be £21.50 from January

I run my washing machine about 4 times a week and there's only 2 of us at home now (and no horses). Sounds normal to me.

PrioritisePleasure24 · 20/11/2025 13:51

Ours has just been contacted to a water meter as part of a United utilities trial. We don’t have to keep it after the trial and go back to just the traditional billing. But we basically pay the lowest of the two. Considering the traditional billing is £74 monthly!!

Weve already been adjusted to £51 direct debit after two months of them reading usage!

2 adults, 3/4 washes a week lights/darks/bedding and towels. I feel that’s pretty normal I’m in healthcare so is fresh clean every day i have enough for my four shifts. We don’t have a dishwasher and i have the odd bath.

FairKoala · 20/11/2025 13:58

Not metered. 1 bed flat. Thames Water £53 per month
Was paying £29 per month then they put their prices up around April/May time

Papyrophile · 20/11/2025 14:10

Another Cornish victim of South West Water's gouging prices. We also pay £80+ per month for two people who have showers only, run dishwasher once a day and use the washing machine maybe three times a week max. But Devon and Cornwall have the longest coastlines and probably the most tourists which drives up the overheads.

MiddleAgedDread · 20/11/2025 14:14

Are you on a meter or based on the rateable value of your property? That can make a huge difference. You might also be able to get a reduction on your wastewater charge if your surface water doesn’t discharge to the sewer network.

FullOfMomsense · 20/11/2025 14:20

110-140 a month. 5 kids, 2 adults. Multiple laundry loads, multiple bathrooms. I've heard worse!

Teddybear23 · 20/11/2025 14:24

£307 =£51 per month. I pay around £33 per month and there are 2 adults at home, but only one of us is at home most of the time. Are you on a water meter? We are, so £51 per month is a lot imo.

PurplePolishing · 20/11/2025 10:33

Wow to some of these prices!

Family of 5, 3 teens - we pay £185 per month, South East.

Jesus!!!!!
