I've been reading for and can see everyone is so lovely! I managed to make £40 on vinted recently and now all the kids have new wellies, the younger two have new leggings and some dance clothes for both ds and dd. Ds is only five so I wasn't buying new for him! Dd needed different shoes and skirt for a few lessons so again I wasn't buying new for a few lessons here and there!

MaryGreenhill · 20/09/2025 18:28

Well done with your Vinted haul @HP87 😁 we have been trying it out quite a bit on here and we have been amazed at the amazing bargains and the quality of the stuff available. The sellers l have come across have been so lovely too 😁

Hello Frugaleers (or Comrades which made me smile -.reminds me of a previous team I was in)

I'm reading but not posting. In the last four weeks one of my closest and oldest friends had a stage IV terminal diagnosis, my idiot alcoholic DB was rushed into hospital; he lives with my elderly mother after he lost his house so the last 10 days I've been run ragged with them and then he discharged himself on the day we completed on the sale of DHs late parents house, of all days! I was incandescent with rage yesterday, how I didn't lose it is quite amazing. DS has left his apprenticeship (again) and DH had a dodgy looking ulcer in his mouth under review (all fine there). Thank God for my DD, Dsis and DSIL. Plus DH has stepped up.

Anyway I'm also working full time and haven't had time to post! I'll be back soon. I need to be looking at my monthly spends so far 😲 however some of that is shopping for DM which I will sort when I get access to her bank (have POA so that's just a form) and some have been household and emergency purchases. That reminds me - MOT and service on Monday.

Somehow I've also got a load of things sorted for Christmas, including some bargains 🎄

Love the bedding @MaryGreenhill my Christmas bedding was one of your Primark links a few years ago, fleecy with robins and holly 🎄

Frugal25 · 20/09/2025 22:07

Oh @Mochi1fudge . I'm so sorry. What a horrid and heartbreaking few weeks you have had. Sending my love. So glad you have a few around you supporting you. Xxx

Sold a few things on vinted that I put on this morning. Will post Monday morning.

Frugal25 · 20/09/2025 22:09

Welcome @HP87 !!! We are lovely here, do join in. I don't tend to stick to anything, esp being sensible with money. But since I found this lovely lot in Jan, I have stuck to my budget every day. You will be the same Im sure

MaryGreenhill · 20/09/2025 22:14

@Mochi1fudge oh no bless you sweetheart that's awful . Such a lot for you to cope with l am so sorry. It's all come at once for you and it's enough to floor anyone . You sound like you have got it though well done for coping with it .
That duvet set was gorgeous too l still have that set but .....
I couldn't resist this one 🤣

@Mochi1fudge that is such a lot going on for you. Sending love!!

@HP87 welcome to our lovely thread 💖

The problem with Vinted is it is very cheap but it adds up. I had an attack of insomnia a few nights ago and spent £70 in the early hours! On top of the money I had in my balance. I’ve lost nearly 6 stone so really needed new clothes.

I’ve got news. 🗞️ DW and I have decided to open a small dog boarding/walking/daycare business! Well, it’ll be mostly me of course. We’ve been talking about it for a while and decided it and made an action plan on the long drive up to the highlands. We have a name; a logo; a Facebook and instagram page; a website domain bought (DS can make us one); and emails purchased. All for £15. I’ve poured over the license conditions and am going to apply for one shortly. Once I’ve got that I’ll get insurance, I’ve also signed up for a pet first aid course. It will be on a very small and casual basis; max 1 dog at a time (or 2 from the same family) and I’d go in cheap for 6 months while I’m new. But if I can get going it’ll bring in some extra money for us.

I’m still going to keep looking for a part time job too.

lifelongfrugaleer · 21/09/2025 09:31

£40 for the guttering to be cleared - at least now when it rains it won't come cascading over the top!

Vinorosso74 · 21/09/2025 14:32

Fairly low spend few days until we spent £150 in Sainsburys today. We did get quite a lot!
Cat decided to chase a fox resulting in a brief scrap/roll around. He was walking a bit funny so I thought vet visit was ahead (we have insurance but there's still the excess) turned out he had a huge bit of soil between his toes. I don't think there's any injuries.
I have some bits to relist on Vinted this week. If they don't sell, I'll send them to the charity shop. Some extra money would be nice but each item will only sell for a few quid. I'm also decluttering so need to find a balance.

psuedocream3 · 21/09/2025 16:25

Hi everyone, I fell off the last thread, I have some readoing back to do but I hope everyone is doing well and being mindful with money.

Unfortunately my husband has been made redundant. I'm feeling calm about the situation currently, I don't think the reality of it has sunk in yet, but our financial health is looking somewhat rocky going forward.

£43.50 on clothes for my youngest, needed as hes grown a size. Small graces, I have already purchased presents for both my youngest childrens birthdays in the next few weeks, I'm glad I was organised early this year.

Will try to keep up with the thread now. I have gone through our finances today, cutting out anything unnecessary and looking at new jobs and income streams next week. Trying to go into this with a positive mindset.

Have a lovely weekend all

Mochi1fudge · 21/09/2025 16:26

Ah thank you everyone 🙏 sitting in the garden as it was all too hot in the house. DH came out and was calm and supportive. Feel a bit better so best jump back on the frugal wagon..

Nearly bought an Indian takeaway on the way home today (I know at 1pm in the afternoon they were likely closed!) so I made a lasagne for today and also put a lamb, squash and apricot tagine in the slow cooker. New recipe - will see.

Today has been £3.97 at Lidl for a house warming card, some cartons of smoothies (freebie) and 2 of the Dubai Chocolate Muffins (£1 off them).

DD would like a Starbucks which is her treat for a praise postcard from school.

I've bought the Six Murders of Daphne St Clair which I think was recommended on here as I had an Amazon Birthday Voucher. Looking forward to reading that later. And not spending any more money!

Thanks again ,😊

Mochi1fudge · 21/09/2025 16:30

@psuedocream3 our posts just crossed there! Sorry to hear your husband's work news. We've been there I think three times with DH in the past. Not a pleasant thing to go through but you will get through it. Sending unmumsnetty hugs

BigSkies2022 · 21/09/2025 16:51

Yikes, mochi, that is a big spoonful of trouble to swallow. I hope you have had your lot for a good while. Psuedo I am sorry about your husband's news on his job - we are very much held up by my husband's much bigger income, and I will have less coming in for a couple of months going forward, so these threats feel very real...

But pearls - congratulations on your new business venture, best of luck with it.

We took our own Ddog to Battersea park today after dropping off DS at a nearby work gig. I always enjoy that park - feels properly cosmopolitan and global, like I could be in New York or Hong Kong. Managed to spend £20 on two toasties, a black coffee and a matcha latte with oat milk. The latter tasted like grass clippings, so I won't be repeating that experience, but I've done it now and can claim to be in with the hip crowd.

Also spent £135 on some new walking shoes in the North Face shop in the Battersea Turbine shopping mall, and £22 on hiking socks. I do need these things, since my last pair of walking shoes fell apart in France and we will be staying on the South West Coast Path when in Devon, so walking will feature heavily. Just wasn't really planning to buy them today. Ah well. Did manage to swerve spending £6 on a slice of cheesecake from the Japanese patisserie however, so small win for both health and frugality! The new retail/hospitality developments at Battersea are highly adept at getting money off you, so approach with caution!

Chicken tikka masala tonight. Best get marinadin'.

HP87 · 21/09/2025 17:04

Good day today, dh is out with dd already all paid for will need food on the way home but parents will likely pay for that.
We've had a park visit with friends, then home, managed to scrap together enough for the three of us to have a McDonald's for dinner (money left in the account and some from top cashback!)

Really are now on zero so big test for the next 9 days!

lifelongfrugaleer · 21/09/2025 17:09

Ah sorry to hear that pseudo. Hopefully the payout will help for a few weeks

Frugal25 · 21/09/2025 21:26

So sorry @psuedocream3 . Sending hugs xx
Congratulations @PearlsPearl , very excited!!

£17 here due to kitchen light giving up the ghost. It's been threatening for four years. Finally went through with it. Came off my work card that's already left bank account so it's all ok and I get cash back.
Made £33 on vinted. All wrapped and ready for tomorrow. I've seen a few things for Christmas gifts that I'll spend it on. Trying hard to be savvy with it and really did take time to look around first.
OH and DD didn't want the dinner I made tonight. So I've made it and we shall have tomorrow. Does throw my meal plan out the window slightly but I may make it all on my day off on Tues and the freeze what we don't need. Saves money next week on food too.

Alwayslearning25 · 22/09/2025 06:31

Hi all, help me brainstorm what to book to do with my toddler during term time. I'm spoilt for choice. I live near Legoland. A toddler year pass on the face of it is good value as £49, but there's so many extras, parking, discounts on Lego sets, any food or drink...but I could be strick. Odds farm is much more expensive £140 for a year pass for both of us. Then a term of music class is £126 or £10 a session which I don't think is good value. There's free bounce and rhyme at the library. I have national trust membership too...then there's a couple of soft plays. One I've not been to because it's too expensive. And toddler groups are £1-2 but he goes there with the childminder and we don't love them... 3rd world problem of too much choice. I think we'll go to a farm park, not odds farm, more about animals, it's around £7.

ChipshopPickledEgg · 22/09/2025 06:55

I think I would go Lego land at £49 and a farm even the £140 one it only works out at £15 for the both a month that's some cheap pre paid days out sorted. We have something similar in my neck of the woods we have passes for but I don't allow us to even enter the gift shop my daughter has been managing to get an ice-cream out of me recently at £3 though which I think is pretty reasonable.

lifelongfrugaleer · 22/09/2025 09:42

always. Pic nics are your friend here. Always take one in your days out. Get a food flask for soup & sandwich or scones in the winter. Tea / hot choc etc for drinks.
national trust have great play parks. And events. I would also do the library at toddler age & get books

I would wait for legoland until a bit older tbh and dona farm

lifelongfrugaleer · 22/09/2025 09:44

Get some good waterproof & warm stuff. Someone shared a good regatta deal in the Christmas thread.
