Fish and chips in a cafe

We went to a cafe attached to a fish and chip shop today - basically a chippy that had a few tables. We had two adult cod and chips, 2 kids’ sausage and chips, 2 mushy peas and 3 small bottles of water. £66!!!! I feel like the world has gone mad.

£18 for one adult take away portion where I live. Your costs sound cheap!

CeciliaMars · 29/05/2025 19:43

Yes it was £18 for the fish and chips. I feel like not long ago, £18 was the price of a really nice main in a proper restaurant! I must be getting old.

We had 3 chips, 2 fish, 2 curry sauce and 2 cans of coke for £24 in a similar set up yesterday (northern town).

Barbiewhirl · 29/05/2025 19:54

It is substantially more than it used to be, but the rise in the price of oil, utilities and fresh ingredients is wild.

CeciliaMars · 29/05/2025 20:13

If it really is about the cost of fish and utilities, would it be so wildly different in a northern and a southern town? This was on the south coast.

We get beautiful fish, chips and salad for £15.20 in our local pub. Wouldn't pay £18 in a chippy.

Hall84 · 29/05/2025 20:27

Ive just been to a chippy. Northern sea side town. £22.50 got me a DD a large fish and chips (which they let us share) with mushy peas, a giant portion of curry sauce, 1 slice bread & butter, a lemonade, a small glass of wine and a kids ice cream. If we'd added on a kids meal it would have been another £6.50.

TheSilentSister · 29/05/2025 20:30

It's £9.50 for battered cod in East Anglia. £7.90 for large cheesy chips. Shocking.

CeciliaMars · 29/05/2025 20:34

Wow. It was £18 for cod and chips and £10 for kids fish and chips! £2.50 per pot of mushy peas. We hardly ever eat out and now I remember why! It was literally a table in a chippy…

£9.75 for large fish and chips and £7.50 for standard where I live.

But they do a cheap deal for one hour only at weekday lunchtimes (except Fridays) -£7 for medium fish and chips, with peas or gravy or curry sauce and a can of drink. Always a massive queue of people for lunch when the offer is on!

Rent. Business rates. All a lot more on the South coast than in a northern town.

Redshoeblueshoe · 29/05/2025 20:46

Last week I got a small fish, chips and mushy peas £8.50 at the clock tower chippy at Morecambe bay. It was bloody gorgeous. Bonus for a lovely view of the Lake District.

TheCurious0range · 29/05/2025 20:48

We're south east by the coast and that would cost £56.50 at our local takeaway (just checked the menu), so an extra £10 to sit in a café with proper plates etc seems about right.
£3 for curry sauce now!!

Finteq · 29/05/2025 20:51

£20.50

For 2 fish and chips with one portion of mushy peas.
Would have been more if we ate in.

BobbyBiscuits · 29/05/2025 20:54

My local very traditional un-fancy chippie charges £12.50 for the fish alone! For takeaway! The mushy peas came in a thimble for about four quid. Chips are about £3.50.
So yeah, it's the same price as a mid range sit down restaurant with waiter service and tablecloths etc!

AdoraBell · 29/05/2025 21:00

£12.50 here. We share chips.

Oldermumofone · 29/05/2025 21:05

£18.00 in a Northumberland seaside town cafe yesterday for fish and chips. We thought similar and went for takeaway - still £13.50!

Teeplow · 29/05/2025 21:08

7.20 for a large fish and chips, but it’s very far north with cheap rents. I think I’d keel over at above 20

Littletinytarzanswingingfromanosehair · 29/05/2025 21:09

I prefer fish and chips from a gastro pub and it seems to cheaper.
I've tried too many chippys where the chips are either; soggy, anaemic or undercooked.
An expensive waste.
And don't even get me started on the chippys that are stingy on the salt and vinegar!

CeciliaMars · 29/05/2025 21:13

It’s funny, I feel like it was a tipping point for me where I realised these kind of things aren’t worth it anymore. What used to feel like an affordable treat now feels like an unaffordable luxury. But if lots of people stop going to these kind of places, I can see they’ll only get more expensive.

DP and I had fish and chips in a lovely pub in Cardiff yesterday. £11 each on their lunch deal. I think it said £16 at dinner. Either way, an absolute bargain.

£27.50 for family deal of 2x adults and 2x kids fish and chips to take away.
£16 for adults and £8 kids to eat in but it's a very nice place - live piano music and chandeliers!

LoafofSellotape · 29/05/2025 21:31

£33 for 2 cod and chips for takeaway in Devon 18 months ago.

Comedycook · 29/05/2025 21:36

Yeah that's expensive imo op.

I remember when a meal out in a very nice restaurant for a family of four would be about that much. You'd think a chip based meal in a cafe without even juice, fizzy drinks or alcoholic drinks would be a lot less. World is crazy.

TwinklyRoseTurtle · 29/05/2025 21:37

I think £66 is outrageous 😳
