Fish and chips in a cafe

We went to a cafe attached to a fish and chip shop today - basically a chippy that had a few tables. We had two adult cod and chips, 2 kids’ sausage and chips, 2 mushy peas and 3 small bottles of water. £66!!!! I feel like the world has gone mad.

DP and I had fish and chips in a lovely pub in Cardiff yesterday. £11 each on their lunch deal. I think it said £16 at dinner. Either way, an absolute bargain.

I'm veggie so don't eat fish, but that aside, those chips don't look so good even with skins on them.

I think I would rather pay £18 and have a proper looking fish and chips that’s a decent portion size 🙈

Come to Yorkshire, haddock and chips, fried in beef dripping and much nicer than cod is about £10 and plenty for lunch for two, very few people could eat the whole thing to themselves unless perhaps they're big eaters of the 'eat little all day in anticipation of a big dinner' variety.

The entire country flocks to the Magpie in Whitby. Those of us who live here know that they're very average by Yorkshire standards and not as good as the local suburban chippy.

We get beautiful fish, chips and salad for £15.20 in our local pub. Wouldn't pay £18 in a chippy.

Salad with fish and chips? You must be down south 😁

I’m from Yorkshire lol, I have only eaten in the magpie a couple of times because I refuse to stand in the queue going half way down the street waiting for a table haha

I think I would cry if I wanted fish and chips and got this. Those are potato wedges!

It was massive and delicious. Much nicer than soggy chip shop chips.

I think the chef was French. They didn’t taste like wedges; definitely fried not roasted.

It’s funny, I feel like it was a tipping point for me where I realised these kind of things aren’t worth it anymore. What used to feel like an affordable treat now feels like an unaffordable luxury. But if lots of people stop going to these kind of places, I can see they’ll only get more expensive.

If we are treating adult children ,DILs and 2 grandchildren and ourselves to a meal we go to Wetherspoons. Last time we went we had a selection of full breakfasts( them), plates of toast ( me) fruit and yoghurt( husband), children had American pancakes and we had as many cups of tea and coffee ( free refills) as everyone wanted. It came to £42.00. Superb value.

We go there occasionally... people can be snobby but the food is surprisingly good and it's amazing value.

If you want an even cheaper meal, IKEA is amazing. I had a hotdog and chips there last week for about £2!

FigTreeInEurope · 30/05/2025 08:37

I live in Italy and fear I will never eat fish and chips again. It's one of the few things I miss about Britain. However, calamari, or something like fried squid and sides is way less than a tenner here.

Same here in Australia, a lovely feed of fish & chips PLUS prawns, squid and salad at my local pub: $32 which is about £15.

Sirzy · 30/05/2025 08:48

I went to trenchers in Whitby a few days back and a small fish and chips (which wasn’t a small portion!) was £14 and delicious!

My picture clearly hasn’t done it justice. It was lovely. Leaving the thread now, as this is getting boring. I don’t like chip shop chips, so this was much better for me.

I agree. We used to take the kids out for a nandos quite often on a weekend. I viewed it as a small affordable treat... nothing hugely special. Now by the time we've added drinks and maybe a dessert, we don't get much change from £80/90. I really do feel like, is it really worth it?

We went the other month while shopping in the city. It was £50 for DH and I. I kept double checking the app to make sure we hadn’t accidentally ordered anything extra!

JBJ · 30/05/2025 09:02

Just had a look on the menu at my local chippy - £36.50 for that lot here (midlands), including a side and drink on the kids meals.

BunnyLake · 30/05/2025 09:14

We didn’t eat at restaurants very often as a kid, we were lowish income, but I do remember we would occasionally go to the fish and chip cafe in town to eat. That was five of us and my mum and dad didn’t balk at the price (and they were on a tight budget), so it must have been very reasonable in those days (late 60s/early 70s). I can't imagine how much that would cost today.

ViciousCurrentBun · 30/05/2025 09:23

It’s very much county and then area specific within county.

@ArtemisiaTheArtist Your post reminded me of Fleabag when she sells her sister a basic cheese sandwich for £20 and they both eyeroll and mutter ‘London’.

I was on holiday recently and arriving late we decided to have fish and chips. Looked online and most were shut. Found one in the middle of an estate, £7 each for huge portions and the man kindly gave me a free tea as they didn’t sell tea but I had asked for tea as a drink. I would imagine his rent would be cheaper than a High street. Places cater to the local market to an extent. Rents in my home town are way cheaper than a couple of suburbs over. Just had a peek and a takeaway is up for rent at 1k per month. Had a quick peek at a very average not posh London suburb I lived in years ago and similar is 2.5k per month rent.

dottydodah · 30/05/2025 09:38

£13.50 here! (South Coast) large cod and large chips .Me and DH share and DD has a separate portion .If all 5 of us had it would be over £60,00.Used to be a weekly treat ,now once or twice a month!

I’d feel really cheated if I’d ordered fish and chips and that was served to me. The ‘chips’ look like a poor attempt at doing wedges in an air fryer.

MadisonAvenue · 30/05/2025 09:48

I’ve just looked at the menu for our local chippy and that order would come to £56, small town in Staffordshire.
Fish and chips are an occasional treat now.
