£7 for a tube of Colgate toothpaste?!?!

I know you can buy supermarket own brand cheapy toothpaste - which we also do - but we have Colgate too, as we differ in our individual preferences and gag tolerances in our household.

I physically gasped and actually squealed in shock when I saw the price of a 125ml tube of Colgate in Asda yesterday - a few pence short of £7! I may also have loudly exclaimed "Behave yourself!!"

They're very vocal about their rollback prices, but oddly enough are completely silent about their extreme roll-forward prices!

I managed to get it cheaper in Home Bargains - £1.99 for a smaller 75ml tube; but I'm still flabbergasted and unable to mentally process that price!

Are Colgate owned by the same company as the one that makes Lurpak, perchance?!

Ridiculous waste of money. Supermarket own brand is fine. Look on the back of the tube for info on the fluoride content, if it says 1450 ppm then it does the job.

Neighbours87 · 07/05/2025 21:35

It’s crazy how prices have gotten out of control. I know it’s cheaper in home bargains etc but it’s pretty crap that you have to shop around for toothpaste

suki1964 · 07/05/2025 21:37

I never buy toiletries from the supermarket, they are always dearest there

Savers if you have one are always lower prices

Home Bargains/ B&M are also cheaper

Poundland - check the size, they are often a tad smaller

Learn the price per ML, gr, pound or kilo of everything - a lot of special offers are anything but

ThatRoseBear · 07/05/2025 21:42

I saw this last week. I was shopping with DH and DD and we all couldn't get over how bloody expensive toothpaste is! We didn't get that one, got one for £2. Things have crept up on price steadily and by stealth. Occasionally you notive something like this and it's surprising. I hate food shopping now as it feels like we can't buy nice things as treats as essentials are so expensive

SleepingisanArt · 07/05/2025 21:43

I bought this size when it had an introductory offer (£3.50) - it is a much larger tube than the standard one. The s Aller standard size is £3 in morrisons currently.

I was shocked by the big box of Weetabix for £8 in Sainsburys today!

Thepieonear · 07/05/2025 21:47

I’m finding this with most toiletries have sky rocketed , my usual shampoo and conditioner has doubled in price

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 07/05/2025 21:49

LOL what a joke of a price. They're £1.50 in Savers!

Madness! Morrisons own 24 pack of Weetabix is around £1.80. (So around £3.60 for 48.) Tastes the same as the actual brand.

doodahdayy · 07/05/2025 21:54

Asda is a rip off. It has been for years. In boots you can find standard Colgate or oral b for just over £1 and probably the same in many other shops

Lacoutine · 07/05/2025 21:58

Toothpaste is something that it really helps to stock up on when you see a good price, as they all do deals at different times - I picked up a couple of tubes of the XL the other day on a half price offer (£3.50) at … wait for it … Waitrose 😁

ssd · 07/05/2025 21:58

I was in asda the other day, i agree some if the prices are eye watering. Waitrose is cheaper.

ssd · 07/05/2025 22:00

Cross posts🤣

SquigglePigs · 07/05/2025 22:01

It's half price in Tesco if that helps!

But yeah, that's an insane price.

Switch to Aquafresh!!

nannynick · 07/05/2025 22:03

@RaininSummerI used to drink Kenco Rich but found Sainsbury’s Gold was very similar and cheaper. So try some own brand versions, you may find one you like.

That reminds me of this from the wonderful Dave Gorman!

I wonder if these more fancy toothpastes are really any better than a basic toothpaste. There must be some research out about it. Anyone a dentist and want to say if these fancy toothpastes really make much difference to teeth & gum health?

Luddite26 · 07/05/2025 22:13

Not the same but my sensodyne was neating a fiver in Sainsbury's on Amo it was £2ish. On subscribe and save even less 15% less the normal price.
I have for a long time had a big box coming every month with toiletries, Andrex, washing pods cherry pepsi etc. some things in supermarkets are shocking. And I haven't the energy to trawl round B and M etc.
The red kenco is another one. Shocking how much it has gone up.

Thanks. Will try that one. Lidl coffee is revolting.

Seamond · 07/05/2025 22:22

I generally buy toothpaste from Amazon as DH likes Colgate sensitive and I like Corsodyl but if you aren't bothered, any toothpaste with the recommended fluoride is perfectly good

WhatsitWiggle · 07/05/2025 22:25

It's £3.50 with a Clubcard in Tesco. But I agree the price has jumped significantly recently. I keep an eye out for Clubcard prices and bulk buy at those times, and always compare the price per 100ml as it can be cheaper to buy the smaller ones than the bigger one depending on the offer (I have been known to whip out my phone calculator to check the best options).

I use biomin f which I think is one of the ones proven to make a difference. Did a load of reading about it before I bought it

Bjorkdidit · 08/05/2025 01:15

It will be on Rollback before you know it.

But no-one needs to pay that price, so it could be £100 a tube and its not evidence of CoL or anything else worth gasping and squealing about.

If you want to use that toothpaste, buy it when or where it's cheaper and keep a stock so you never run out and 'have' to pay £7.

It's not like it takes up space and if you can't afford to keep a couple of spare tubes of fancy toothpaste in stock, you wouldn't be buying it anyway, you'd be likely get whatever is available for £1 or so, which could still be Colgate if you're wedded to the myth that branded = better.

FoxesBisQuit · 08/05/2025 02:37

I have noticed increase in toothpaste and shampoo and conditioner costs. We have gone for the really cheap stuff and will make do.
