£7 for a tube of Colgate toothpaste?!?!

I know you can buy supermarket own brand cheapy toothpaste - which we also do - but we have Colgate too, as we differ in our individual preferences and gag tolerances in our household.

I physically gasped and actually squealed in shock when I saw the price of a 125ml tube of Colgate in Asda yesterday - a few pence short of £7! I may also have loudly exclaimed "Behave yourself!!"

They're very vocal about their rollback prices, but oddly enough are completely silent about their extreme roll-forward prices!

I managed to get it cheaper in Home Bargains - £1.99 for a smaller 75ml tube; but I'm still flabbergasted and unable to mentally process that price!

Are Colgate owned by the same company as the one that makes Lurpak, perchance?!

Surely you'd get it even cheaper than in Home Bargains in Poundland?

saveforthat · 07/05/2025 20:35

It's "deep clean" op. Bog standard colegate is cheaper. We never had all these options years ago. Just buy a standard tube.

"Actually squealed in shock" - I might have to take this as a username.

Yes, I think I'll be shopping around more and stocking up when the price is much more reasonable.

Asda, though; it's hardly an upmarket boutique - they were selling a 1kg bag of carrots for 8p a few weeks ago!!

Home bargains 1.20 for Colgate you need to shop around.

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 07/05/2025 20:39

I’m an ASDA hater. But clearly they are taking the piss. Awful supermarket that I have hated for the best part of 15 years.

Ted27 · 07/05/2025 20:40

It is the 3xl size

When people were frothing about the Lurpack they also failed to notice it was the 500g size, not 250g so it was not surprisingly more expensive

IfYouPutASausageInItItsNotAViennetta · 07/05/2025 20:41

Yeah, I know that's the fancier end of the Colgate range, but it's the one we usually get. Last time I remember buying the same stuff, same size, it cost significantly less than half that.

Interestingly, I think the strapline saying "2 months of brushing" is new - presumably to try to justify themselves in advance to people who see the shelf price and say "By 'eck, how much?!".

StarTwirl · 07/05/2025 20:41

It’s extra large

Lancrelady80 · 07/05/2025 20:43

Not just Asda - it's the same in Tesco near us, although it is the bigger size. But even so!

However, they do often have it at half price. Still gutting when it wasn't that long ago we were waiting until it was on a "two for £4" offer!

Colgate do one for £1

I've only ever seen the two sizes: 75ml and 125ml, and this was the bigger of the two. It didn't look like a particularly jumbo variant.

It says '3x', but I think that's referring to the protection/power of the stuff and not the tube size.

We don't actually buy Lurpak ourselves, but I've seen the rocketing prices for butter in general - along with most of the 500g tubs being quietly reduced to 400g.

I can only shop online so no access to the discount stores but I've found that everything other than food is cheaper in multipacks on amazon. All laundry stuff, shower gel, hand wash, toothpaste, deodorant.

That colgate is £4 for a single tube delivered, not cheap but better.

Obviously there are issues with supporting amazon! I don't feel particularly bad about getting everything delivered though, might be more efficient than everyone driving to the shop.

I didn't go full-on Sistine Chapel or anything like that; but it just slipped out unavoidably Grin

Lidl have dropped the colgate to the shrunk 75ml only but least 99p

Aiiii · 07/05/2025 21:00

Don't all the supermarkets take it in turns to have toothpaste, etc at half price, and so, for the "half price" to be a must-buy, they have to have it on the shelves for a few weeks at the full "no one expects to pay that" price?

MoominMai · 07/05/2025 21:04

@IfYouPutASausageInItItsNotAViennetta 125ml is currently on offer for £4 Nectar card holders at Sainsbury’s if you want to do a stock up which is what I always try do. I don’t know why but I really begrudge paying for toothpaste - and toilet roll I guess 😅

That may be it, actually - I hadn't thought of that. Give it a week and Asda may have it on 'huge rollback' down to £3 or whatever, with a great big sign publicising it.

I remember reading ages ago that DFS maintained one store (in Basildon iirc) where the prices never went down - just so that they could comply with the law and state that it had been on sale for at least 28 days at the stated higher price. Working in that deserted store was probably the introvert's dream job!

I have decided to give up coffee I think after being unable to find my usual kenco for less than 7 quid a jar. Be better for my health and pocket.

minnienono · 07/05/2025 21:14

I bought Colgate Monday - 99p for 75ml in Lidl

BIWI · 07/05/2025 21:18

I’ve done a lot of work (research) with dentists over the years, and the two most important things they have always said are:

  1. brushing
  2. 1450ppm fluoride toothpaste

On that basis, we buy Aldi’s Dentitex, 125ml, for 69p. At my last check-up my dentist complimented me on how clean my teeth were.

irregularegular · 07/05/2025 21:23

That's something fancy though. It's £8 in Ocado. But Ocado also sell standard "triple action" toothpaste for 99p for 75 ml which I buy, or there are others £1.50 for 125ml.

HamiltonHarty · 07/05/2025 21:24

Tesco do that with other products too. Surely no one would pay £7.25 for 90g of Azera coffee, but they halve it regularly so I buy then

lovegoodlovegood · 07/05/2025 21:27

I pay £10 for 75ml of my toothpaste Blush but it’s the only one that works for my sensitive teeth and apparently is the best for teeth
