How much is your weekly food shop, I try stick to a budget of £60-80 per week but really struggle so I'm intrigued how much others spend. My price gets dinners for a week and a couple other food items. No toiletries etc.

£140-£185 a week for 5 of us and pets.

Saveusernsme · 24/01/2025 15:47

About £150-£180 a week for four of us. It used to be more but I’m cooking everything from scratch now including treats and pudding. It means less takeaways. Everything is great quality too but we don’t drink so no alcohol included in that.

nannyl · 24/01/2025 19:05

2 adults and 2 teenagers
Shop at Ocado
I try (and normally suceed) to keep it under £100 / week.
But this doesnt include their 5 school dinners, or my own lunch for 3 days a week.

I also have a milkman, and use smol products, and WGAC for loo roll, and wine subscription so these things arnt included in my weekly shop.

I cook pretty much everything from scratch and actively avoid processed foods.
We eat fresh meat (or fish) every day.

I budget £550 per month.

I do a few big deliveries at the beginning of the month.

So this month was

Iceland £72
Tesco £200
Muscle Food £102

=£ 374

Which then leaves me with £30 - £40 ish a week for top ups depending on whether it's a 4 or 5 week month!

The big shop at the beginning of the month included washing tablets, dishwasher tablets, cat food for the month, cat litter for the month, etc.

But I will still probably struggle on the £30-£40 on top ups.

Seaside3 · 25/01/2025 02:15

Around £80 -£90 per week. 2 adults, 2 adult sized teens. Includes toiletries, cleaning products, cat food. Doesn't include alcohol and puddings, which vary depending on what they want.
I know most people are in awe ar those.who spend less, I'm always surprised at.people who spend more! Like what do you buy? Do you have fully stocked kitchens all the time?

SharpOpalNewt · 25/01/2025 02:25

Tesco delivery was £280 this week. 5 adults, dog, two cats, fair bit of non food stuff. That was more than usual but it's never less than £200. But that is only £40-£60 per person when you think about it. I used to spend about £30 a week as a student 30 years ago.

Wigtopia · 25/01/2025 02:37

£35-.£45 per week for two vegetarian adults so no expensive meat/fish. That’s food only but does cover all food as we over cook dinners to have as lunch the following day. I think that helps keep costs down rather than having to buy fillers for sandwiches.

cleaning products are bought in bulk separately and no clue on the cost as I don’t get involved with that- well and truly DP’s domain

How many people does this cover?

MidnightBloom · 25/01/2025 02:42

Our weekly shop comes in around £110/£120 per week. 2 adults, 1 teen, 1 dog. For food, toiletries, cleaning everything. Shop at Tesco.

Edited to add, we buy fresh foods, veg, fruit.

Snippit · 25/01/2025 05:29

Just the two of us and costs approximately £120 a week. Hubby has to have meat most days, I’m coeliac and lactose intolerant, so costs more for special dietary food. Once upon a time you could get a prescription for coeliac food, that’s all stopped as we’re told there’s more availability. Yes there is, but it’s so bloody expensive! A decent very small brown loaf is £3.60.

When my hubby worked away I could get away with £40-£50 a week. Everything I make is from scratch, mainly due to the coeliac bit.

Bargaintools · 25/01/2025 05:45

About £150 or so a week for 2 adults and a 17 year old. Main shop is delivered by Tesco every weekend and I will pop in during the week only because I find it an utter chore deciding what’s for tea every night so often I will pick up something later into the week.

I really am in awe of those with totals of less than £100!

We are two adults and two toddlers and it’s between £140-£180 consistently. I’m including nappies and personal care items in that but still!

Ours is similar. I have a 4 year old ds and a baby ds. Definitely couldn't manage it for less than £00

yipyipyop · 25/01/2025 05:51

£100 even!

Gluten free food is expensive but I wouldn't expect the nhs to fund it when it's available in supermarkets

Carinattheliqorstore1 · 25/01/2025 05:57

£100 a week. For 3 of us (2 adults and DS9). Used to be £60-70 a week but has crept up the last few years.

both DH and I work from home so it covers all of our lunches and snacks too.

I’m vegetarian, and don’t cook meat, so apart from cold meat for my husband’s sandwiches we don’t buy much meat

GrowingSideways · 25/01/2025 06:03

Between £220 and £260 a week for 3 adults and one teen, including toiletries. Adult and teen kids friends are here a lot for dinner/snacks. It also includes some meat and treats for our dogs, but not their normal food.

Completelyjo · 25/01/2025 06:08

2 adults and 2 kids, one still in nappies.
We probably spend about £100 a week plus an additional £20 through the week.
It includes cleaning stuff and toiletries.
I can’t seem to spend any less than 100 without it feeling like a huge chore and only sticking to the basics.

Usernameemanresu9 · 25/01/2025 06:28

I've started getting food shopping delivered and have worked out we are best doing getting a delivery every 5 days and I spend £50 each time, so either £300 or £350 a month depending on how many weeks in the month.

Neurodiversitydoctor · 25/01/2025 06:37

3 vegetarian adults £120 a week. Includes 7 X 3 dinners, 5 X 2 lunches, all breakfasrs, cleaning products and rabbit food !

Breakdown is £40 dairy ( loads of cheeses, Yoghurt, organic milk, butter)
£30 Fruit and veg
£20 Dried goods + bread ( lots of pasta, rice, lentils, beans, noodles and nuts)
£7 ish tins
£20 Other including frozen Quorn, toliet paper etc.

CornishDew · 25/01/2025 06:40

I shop every 3 weeks which averages around £65 per week and batch cook. Then top up shop weekly for bread, milk, fresh fruit and the roast joint for Sundays - another £20-25. So £85-90 total. That’s all meals for 2 adults and 1 child excluding school lunches as well as household cleaning products and toiletries. We don’t budget but I can imagine if we did, we could easily shave off another £15 per week

Its saved us about £20-30 per week this way but we also have lots less food waste and I cook far less frequently.

DazedAndConfused321 · 21/01/2025 17:48

About £300-£400. 5 children under 8, 2 adults. Includes drinks and snacks but no alcohol. Not including pet food or household items. We eat fairly clean and all meat is from the butcher (included in this price) so I think it's reasonable. We're blessed to not be on a strict budget so this is our average weekly shop, but 'treat' weeks or special occasions it can be more.

We spend about the same (but 3 teens not 5 younger ones). We forgo abroad holidays in order to spend more on the food shop.

Seaside3 · 25/01/2025 12:37

@Philodendrine surely there's a middle ground? I'm addicted to my holidays though, and would happily eat beans for ever more if it was the only way we could go abroad.
OK, maybe not happily.

Shityshitybangbang · 25/01/2025 12:39

2 adults and 12 and 14 year old. One weekly shop in Aldi, aprox 80 quid. Then prob another 50 throughout the week including a takeaway

AyrnotAir · 25/01/2025 12:42

Around 120, three adults, 15 and 12 year old. That also includes cat food and toiletries we may need.

HollyFern1110 · 25/01/2025 12:47

We are 4 adults (me, DH & adult DSs), teenage DD & 2 cats. We probably average around £150 a week but it can easily be £200 depending on what we need that week.

We shop at Lidl, Iceland & very occasionally Morrisons or Tesco. It’s so much more expensive than a couple of years ago & it’s by far our biggest household expense.
