Good shout, might be very helpful for someone feeling the pinch. An upgrade if you have a couple more quid to spend would be some extra fresh veg such as a bag of carrots and a cabbage.

Indigobird111 · 29/05/2024 22:42

And I would be tempted to swap out the tinned spaghetti hoops for a bag of own brand pasta and a couple of tins of own brand chopped tomatoes

Pixiedust1234 · 29/05/2024 22:42

I do love mushrooms (a lot), but mushrooms with sardines, lettuce and tomatoes?

Ok yes normally someone would have that but this is the cheaper option

Thanks op, it would be quite cool to do something similar for the other supermarkets too.
I shop at tesco, so now thinking what I'd do if just for 1 person.

Abitorangelooking · 29/05/2024 23:48

That shopping list is depressing. Tinned spaghetti hoops? Spaghetti is 20-30p a pack, a tin or two tomatoes and a decent pinch of the herbs.

My top tip is try supermarkets in nicer areas for yellow sticker bargains in the evening. We pass a tiny co-op in a tourist hot spot on the way home. Tonight we had thin marinated steaks in a garlic and herbs. Baby leaf salad with plum tomatoes. A punnet of raspberries and a punnet of mango for pudding. I also bought 4 pints of milk and it was £5.47 in total.

I keep a stock of freezer food for when my bargain hunting is fruitless.

Heres my £20 dinner menu for 1 person. I'm assuming they have no basics, so pretty bland, but itvwould give plenty of left overs for lunches/following weeks dinners.

Shopping list: (tesco online)

Frozen chicken breasts 1kg £5.50
All rounder potatoes £1.25 2kg
Broccoli 82p
Penne pasta 500g 41p
Green pesto 99p
Cheddar 400g £2.49
Frozen peas 99p
Minced beef 500g £ 3.49
Onions 1kg 99p
Free range eggs 6 £1.30
2 tins chopped Tom's 78p
Chicken stock cubes £1
Rice 1kg 52p
Vegetable oil £1.85
£22.48 total

From this I'd make

  1. Roast chicken, potatoes and brocoli
  2. Baked potato, cheese and onions
  3. Omelette with onions, cheese
  4. Pesto pasta with onions, peas, broccoli
  5. Pasta bolognaise
  6. Cottage pie with peas
  7. Pesto pasta bake

I know it's lacking veg, but hopefully it mat help someone.

Ok but in my Asdas you can’t get a pack of spaghetti for 30p but if you can great. It’s just a suggestion/guide. Not everyone can get yellow sticker and I think this list is good as it has veg

You can in my Asda it’s 28p same as in Tesco. One of my pet hates is supermarkets not stocking the essentials/ value ranges in individual stores or areas where there is not a lot of competition. It’s impossible to legislate for but I think it’s really poor practice and disadvantages the poorest disproportionately.

Gingerkittykat · 30/05/2024 02:29

Thanks for the menu and pricings, it might not be to everyone's taste but gives a lot of good ideas.

You said that the dinners are for 1 but it seems like the meals would be high enough for more than one person.

HoHoHoliday · 30/05/2024 02:58

Thanks for this! I'm awful at trying to think of things to make for dinner so this has really helped me.

coxesorangepippin · 30/05/2024 03:04

Re. spaghetti hoops can be microwaved, pasta takes ten mins to cook on hob, needing a pan and the cost of electricity.

Herecomesthesunlittledarlinganditsalright · 30/05/2024 03:21

I miss cheap groceries! No longer in the U.K. so “for fun” I just dumped your first shopping list into the app for our local affordable supermarket: $62.30 before sales tax. 😳

AND I couldn’t even get instant gravy granules 😢

just goes to show, if you are super thoughtful, you can eat very affordably in the UK.

Bjorkdidit · 30/05/2024 05:54

What am I missing?

People without much money will be quite able to go into a supermarket and buy the cheapest items available to feed themselves.

I like this idea. It's great as the vinegar and herbs make it a bit more joyful and then you don't need to buy them every week

AutumnCrow · 30/05/2024 06:02

I've had students who I've had to talk through making spaghetti hoops on toast because they've got about 35p left.

These basic lists are useful for lots of people.

Whatineed · 30/05/2024 06:38

There's an Irish lady on Instagram that produces videos feeding a family of 5 meals for only €5, normally using Aldi I think, if people are looking for ideas?!

husbandcallsmepickle · 30/05/2024 06:42

On Facebook there's a page called Feed your Family for about £20 a week who have cheap meal plans

In my case I tried to find the cheapest items and brands in Asda I’m in the UK so what’s cheaper might be different in your supermarket. For example if a tin of fish is cheap you could base it around that.
It’s really just trying to pick the cheapest versions of everything

I have tried to shop for a few of her lists and in my Asda it comes to about £35-40 so no longer £20 anymore

Yes it could do 2. Or 1 person with leftovers that they could then have for lunch
