Fed up of having no money

Just that really. I’m fed up of working my ass off (and DH) for what feels like nothing. I know I’m luckier than a lot of other people, food on the table, roof over my head, so please don’t bash me for that. It can’t just be me that is fed up of work, work, work, bills, bills and more bills. I see other families going swimming, going here there and everywhere and I just think “how do they afford it?”. Please tell me I’m not the only one that is so fed up and “robbing Peter to pay Paul constantly.”

OP posts:

I feel exactly the same as you OP. Myself and husband work really hard. We can pay our bills, food on the table etc but nothing left over. No chance of a holiday. Everytime we think oh might have a little left over this month, an unexpected bill will come in. I’m with you it’s relentless and I just can’t see how other people are doing it.

Justanything86 · 21/02/2024 14:01

Yes I'm sick of it. If I want to do anything other than staring at my walls I end up spending more than I earn. Mortgage looks to be going up again soon and I won't be breaking even. Honestly wonder what the point is.

Woodstocks · 21/02/2024 18:11

I think you will most likely be able to do things too. For a family of four to all go swimming is £20 in my local pool. Cinema tickets the same - about a fiver each. That doesn’t class as an expensive day out in my eyes so it’s natural that many people can afford that. Of course if you want the 4D goggles and the special seat and popcorn all round it will be more but it’s really not that expensive to do things.

I think it’s fair to say that a large proportion of the country is feeling the pinch- ourselves I clouded. But there are still many ways to enjoy yourself. Please don’t focus on the negatives and make something of what you can! Hang in there.

Comments like this piss me off. Do you not realise that some people don’t have a spare £20?

I was just thinking exactly the same. The complete cluelessness of thinking £20 is not much when for some people it would be a big chunk of their food budget.

Alwaystired2023 · 21/02/2024 18:17

Agree @forgotmyname1000times £20 is a lot of money!!

forgotmyname1000times · 21/02/2024 18:17

Anyway, this will be us in a three months. Absolutely dreading it. A bit of extra money to do some nice stuff is all that has kept me sane these last six years and soon that will be gone.

Raspberrymoon49 · 21/02/2024 18:18

Agree OP, it’s soul destroying and feels never ending, I want to take family members on days out as they’re going through a really difficult time but all costs are prohibitive and there just isn’t the money, I too work full time and can’t make ends meet, have worked all my life and it feels pointless

I would love to know where you can go to the cinema for a fiver each.

CombatBarbie · 21/02/2024 18:19

Please tell me how cinema costs £20.... I use the blue light discount and get snacks from Asda. Add on petrol.....

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 21/02/2024 18:19

Same, DH and I both work full time and like you, all we do is pay bills and go for walks to pretend we’re actually having a nice time. What’s the point??

Fixesplease · 21/02/2024 18:21

Yeah, I get it.

We are on a pretty decent wage for our neck of the woods, about 45k..both full time working, 1 child, 1 car and Housing association rent, yet we are still robbing Peter to pay Paul on a monthly basis.. our gas and electric bill has just gone up to 300 a month, rent goes up in April as does the council tax. Not to mention the food bill!
No chance of saving for a deposit until things stabilise .

It sucks and is rather soul destroying.

And before anyone asked what we do, other have is a civil servant and I'm a carer for the elderly.
Good, needed jobs, just crap pay.

Our wages just aren't keeping up with the bills.
It's a week before payday and I've got 1.78p in the bank, on the plus side, all the bills and paid and there's food in the house but that's about it!

All the Vue cinemas near me are £4.99 when booked online.

I have £32 to last me until the end of the month. There will be no cinema trips ( tickets cost £10 where I live) or swimming trips here🙄 infact there will be no trips no matter how cheap they are cause the petrol in my car also has to last until end of month.

JamSandle · 21/02/2024 19:01

Do you have an employee reward programme like Perkbox that has any good or free deals?

HolyGuacamole28 · 21/02/2024 21:51

I hear you and emphasise. I earn good money. My H less so but still enough combined to be decent. Yet with a much higher mortgage, 2 in nursery and bills going up, we are struggling. Food is crazy. No child benefit, no help. I want to cry. You’re not alone.

acupofteamakeseverythingbetter · 21/02/2024 22:34

I feel the same and have had a little cry this evening about it all. I'm generally a positive person but it can all feel a bit overwhelming at times

Where I am it's £6 pp plus parking and petrol. Plus snacks. Plus locker. And just life in general.
One person may earn £100000k with a low disposable income. Another may earn £25000 with more disposable income. All about circumstances and you cannot judge people when you have no idea what goes on behind closed doors

Babyroobs · 21/02/2024 22:49

Everything is going up ridiculously. I went to an Indian restaurant for lunch with some friends, used to be really cheap but last week prices had jumped hugely and it cost almost £25 for a thali and a coffee ! Add on £7 for parking for 2 hours in the city center and it ended up being an expensive trip. The same lunch would have been half the price a year or so ago. Everything has gone crazily expensive. I rarely go out but even small treats are becoming out of reach.

LaMariposa · 21/02/2024 23:02

Yes, a year ago I didn’t really need to consider the cost of the weekly shop. Now we are so careful. At least the weather is getting nicer, lots more free outside activities in the summer.

pavillion1 · 22/02/2024 06:15

Ive just applied for a second job 😢. This is not where i thought i would be at the age of 43.

Sweetheart7 · 22/02/2024 07:16

I honestly think it might be what people spend. For example the shopping weekly budgets on MN are ridiculously high but some seem to feel its the norm.

I'm a single parent and I manage to take DS swimming every week, cinemas often and we holiday every single year. No high flyer either!

FedUpMumof10YO · 22/02/2024 07:44

It's utterly shite.

I'm a single parent working 3 jobs (1 FT and 2 PT) and it's still not enough.

I don't know what else I can do ? 🤷‍♀️
