Because of COL?
I’m opting for more park trips rather than days out over the summer hols.

Whattosay81 · 28/07/2023 17:47

Aldi. Better than branded.

Redlorryyellowlorryblue · 28/07/2023 18:10

Weetabix prices are insane. We switched to Tesco ones, which are absolutely fine.

Nutella - now also buy Tesco version.

Fivemoreminutes1 · 28/07/2023 18:45

I was shocked to discover that Heinz baked beans are £1.40 in Tesco, yet have the exact same customer rating as these www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/299669062 which are just 28p for the same size tin.

BarelyLiterate · 28/07/2023 18:52

I have cut down on eating out massively. Not because I can’t actually afford it, but because it has become so ridiculously expensive that I really struggle to justify spending £60 on two courses, a glass of wine & service at a bog-standard chain pub or restaurant.

Couldn't access your link, but I've just bought Hubbards beans at 27p - I can't believe the price difference! Ratings don't look bad either.

Fivemoreminutes1 · 28/07/2023 18:53

This might work https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/299669062

mistermagpie · 28/07/2023 18:55

We went on holiday last week (uk caravan site - can't afford abroad!) and the kids were delighted to be allowed branded Cheerios!

It's Aldi all the way here for most things, has been for ages. But I can't find better bagels and crumpets than warburtons.

My kids will not eat those, nor Sainsbury’s. They will only eat Heinz.

We've swapped down to own brand cereal. I don't eat it but the kids and husband haven't noticed.

Fivemoreminutes1 · 28/07/2023 18:58

@Pennyplant19 Hubbard’s are really good, aren’t they
Colman’s mustard - £1.70 for 100g www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/colmans-english-mustard-100g

Hubbard’s mustard - 70p for 180g, same customer rating. https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/sainsburys-english-mustard--basics-180g

I agree with you on eating out. I can afford it but we've cut back because the service has got a lot worse, portions are smaller and I can do better myself tbh.

froufroulala · 28/07/2023 19:02

I won't buy Heinz brand and will never again.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 28/07/2023 19:02

Branded food
Eating out
Takeaways
Days out that cost money
Any new clothes or shoes apart from for DS who’s growing
Basically all fun 😭

Ilikewinter · 28/07/2023 19:02

I swapped almost all brands for supermarket own. However DH purchased Tropicana orange juice the other week and I could really tell the difference!.

What’s the best own brand weetabix?

Tesco wheat biscuits are good

CinnamonBunAndCoffee · 28/07/2023 19:04

I no longer buy Coca Cola. Also no longer buy Walkers crisps, but I have discovered Aldi’s cheese puffs, Aldi version of Quavers and Aldi version of French fries crisps are just as good and much cheaper.
I also no longer buy anything made by Heinz. i no longer buy Nutella and buy Asda and Aldi own which are just as nice. I don’t buy marmite anymore, I buy Asda own version and it’s equally as nice. Also Tropicana orange juice, I’ve switched to Aldi own brand.

chunkychunks · 28/07/2023 19:04

Having my nails done. Used to have them done every 2 or 3 weeks.

I went to a wedding recently and thought I'd treat myself so took £65 out and needed to go to the cash machine to get more! I was mortified.

Howmanyweekz · 28/07/2023 19:05

Dumped all cereal for overnight oats . It was a UPF thing but has made a decent reduction to the shopping bill ..

HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas · 28/07/2023 19:08

I’ve stopped all waxing, bic razors all the way now!

IggysPop · 28/07/2023 19:10

I worry about the ingredients in cheap processed food (like maltodextrin) - increasingly linked to a range of diseases (as well as weight gain). I have ‘down traded’ on a lot of brands, but really do check the ingredients.

Destinedforfakeness · 28/07/2023 19:10

I hate cleaning my car, I feel like it's hard to get it clean like the professionals do. But I've had a few very mid cleans recently. So doing that myself.

IggysPop · 28/07/2023 19:11

@Howmanyweekz - thinking of moving over to overnight oats. Are they good - do you add much?

Same here, also takeaways.

It's a shame because I enjoy just being out and relaxing, but I do find myself feeling resentful at the bill of a very mediocre meal.

An Indian takeaway now easily comes to £40-50 for the two of us, it's ridiculous.

BreathingDeep · 28/07/2023 19:13

So many things have stopped:
Children’s refresher swim lessons £80pm
Children horse riding £110pm
My haircut/colour every 6 weeks £110
my nails £35 every 3-4 weeks
Weekly cleaner £180pm
all subscriptions £45pm
new glasses
buying books/magazines
regular eating out
clothes/shoes/beauty shopping
pretty much all non-essentials and impulse spending
