Because of COL?
I’m opting for more park trips rather than days out over the summer hols.

Eating out and takeaways

Scones made with Greek yogurt and SR flour, then cooked in the air fryer are lovely.
‘Personally I add sugar, and any going off fruit. The blueberry ones were nice.

My kids are now teens so going out is 4 adult meals, so we don't do it very often. All our holidays are sc UK holidays but we need wheelchair accessible so that pushes up the price! We shop as costco and approved foods which sells short dated and out of date stuff that still tastes fine. I've discovered vinted and bought some new bits off there, as well as ebay. New school uniform ;( the kids have grown at lot) has cost me 160 quid do far and I've still trainers, football boots and shoes to get but I was bullied at school for second hand or the wrong clothes and I want to protect my kids from that.

LouLou198 · 29/07/2023 07:36

Stopped buying new books. I have recently discovered world of books, and they are half the price.

namechanged221 · 29/07/2023 08:12

No abroad hols this year.

I could afford to book it, I'm more concerned about having enough spending money.

Also I do t want to be skint for the rest of the summer?

Sierra26 · 29/07/2023 08:41

Doritos

threecupsofteaminimum · 29/07/2023 09:38

We've stopped buying books full stop now, I don't have space for any more anyway and I get a lot of joy going to the library with DS regularly now.

SpiritusSanctus · 29/07/2023 10:08

Stopped donating as much to charity shops. Always try to sell on vinted first. Even if just a few ££, it soon adds up. Recently sold a few pairs of slightly ropey PJs - being honest about the condition and pricing accordingly - I guess buyers can't afford to be so fussy too.

And buy on vinted too where I can.

Feel bad for charity shops though, getting the real dregs.

And many things above as others have said.

@timegoingtooquickly That sounds great - I would do that but how long can you keep it once open? I always end up throwing half away.....,,

We don't pay to get our car cleaned any more
No more eyebrow tints/ waxes, lash tints/ LVL ever
We still have takeaways, but only because we are having the kitchen done, that'll reduce once its finished
Don't buy anything branded any more, except Heinz ketchup and coke zero
Don't get my hair done as much, never get my nails done any more
Cancelled gym membership
Rarely go to the cinema these days and if we do go all snacks are bought beforehand and smuggled in
Loads of the DC clubs and memberships are not being renewed
Days out vastly reduced

Aldi ketchup is as good as, and we were Heinz ketchup people!

Eating out for me. I used to enjoy a nice breakfast or lunch out by myself - these days, it’s just too expensive.

MissingMoominMamma · 29/07/2023 12:07

I have a wet cut instead of a cut and finish. I tint my own eyebrows and use a coloured conditioner on my hair instead of having lowlights. Paint my own toenails.

I take a flask on walks with friends, rather than going for a coffee afterwards.

Very rarely eat out or have takeaways now.

Basically, most luxuries have gone.

DH works in a luxury industry too, and it’s clear that other folk are cutting back.

Magazines, I used to buy four a month, but they are £6 each now.

If you have a library card you can read magazines for free on the app. The choice does vary.

Also if you have Amazon Prime there are numerous magazines available to read on kindle / e reader.

RaraRachael · 29/07/2023 12:33

We used to love an ice cream from the local well-renowned ice cream shop. It used to be £2.80 for a 2-scoop tub. Went at the start of the summer and it was £4. Last week it had gone up to £4.50. It's nice but not worth that.

This is what I'm finding. Every time you go back to a cafe or restaurant the price has gone up by another 50p. It soon adds up.

We ignore the date and the big tub is on in our fridge for 5 days.

It's so nice we have it all the time and the cartons of yogurt themselves have a really good date on so I stock up when I go to lidl!

I have these plastic tubs which have a shelf on the top so I put frozen cherries on the bottom, some yogurt, then the tray has some really cheaply granola on it. Put it in my packed lunch and it keeps everything cool and is defrosted by lunch time!

AuntyPenny · 29/07/2023 12:57

School dinners - now only an occasional 'treat'.
Hairdresser cut down to every 3 months.
Top up shops at local supermarket - extortionate considering the area is solidly low - middle income.
Streaming services - now only during school holidays or free trial.
Socialising more than twice a year - would rather read in bed anyway.
New clothes - buy mainly charity shop/swap.

Am still spending in other areas, however.

Maggiesgirl · 29/07/2023 13:01

No takeaways
Only Heinz tomato soup everything else own brand.
Holiday out if season in Scotland ( yes will be taking our waterproofs)

We are looking after DGD for two weeks and thought we would take her on a few days out. After paying £120.00 for the three of us to get into Portsmouth Historic Dockyard the rest of the time will be spent in parks and such.

Aldi ketchup is as good as, and we were Heinz ketchup people!

The trouble with that is even if you want to buy cheaper you can't control your tastebuds, at least I and my children can't. If I don't like the taste I'm not going make myself eat something because it's cheaper than the one I usually buy

I dont think you can rate food as "good as" when it comes to the taste, you can objectively compare the nutritional value but ime taste is too subjective

jinnytoo · 29/07/2023 13:05

Small thing, but in the last few weeks my effervescent tablets have increased in price from around £1.00- £1.10 to £1.70. That's Sainsbury's. I might try Aldi or Lidl.

Iamnotanugget · 29/07/2023 13:55

Like everyone else we're thinking more carefully about days out and what we eat. Tesco points aren't as good as they were but we pay for everything on our Tesco credit card and then clear it at the end of the month and that will pay for a few day trips. We've also just opened a Club Lloyds account to get free Disney+ for the year. You need to pay in £2000 per month which is a bit of a faff as we pay some in, take it out again and then pay it back in again to hit 2k but that's our only TV subscription now

I didn’t say Aldi’s is better because as you say subjective.
I said as good as, which of course is subjective, by way of saying it’s the ‘same’ , at least to our palate.

No one is asking you to swap just for the price alone, we certainly wouldn’t have.

Chachatrex · 29/07/2023 18:06

We went for a rare lunch out today and because I’m dieting (and we knew the food was rubbish but it’s a good place to take little kids), DH and I shared a chicken burger and chips and the kids shared a kids meal of chicken dippers and chips. They are 4 and 2 so we always do this for the kids anyway as they would never manage a full kids meal. With a soft drink for me and DH only plus tip it was still £30. It was pretty awful food tbh. But this is why we’ve stopped eating out
