Because of COL?
I’m opting for more park trips rather than days out over the summer hols.

Eating out, We used to go out for a meal on a Friday or Saturday night at least once a month when a main course was roughly £9.95ish. Now they're almost double that for macaroni and cheese, fish/burger and chips so we've stopped.

What’s the best own brand weetabix?

I find Asda are nicer than the originals

overitallll · 28/07/2023 19:20

Muller corner yoghurts. Used to buy 2 packs a week. Rarely buy yoghurt at all now.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 28/07/2023 19:23

Lots of things. I can afford most of them but there is a line where I just look at the cost and think "Nope." Salmon, most branded foods, fruit juice...I'm just as happy eating something else and drinking water. We only eat out when we're out, we don't deliberately go out to eat, and no takeaways (was never a fan). Fewer haircuts, in proportion to the cost increase. No theme parks that require queuing, paid parking and shit food.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 28/07/2023 19:24

Oh and no UK holidays.

FoodFann · 28/07/2023 19:30

Haircuts and hair dye
No holidays this year 😭😭😭
Eating out

Same here, also takeaways.

It's a shame because I enjoy just being out and relaxing, but I do find myself feeling resentful at the bill of a very mediocre meal.

An Indian takeaway now easily comes to £40-50 for the two of us, it's ridiculous.

That’s a mad price for Indian takeaway. Are you in london? Our is about £27 or £33 if we have a side. And that includes hanging naans and poppadoms!

Famous brand ceral , have found most own brand ones are actually OK
Was so shocked the other day when DH came home with a pkt of the real deal ones !!

Lidl own brand weetabix just as good as the real stuff and half the price !

Diddykong · 28/07/2023 19:34

We've cut out things like lamb, salmon, beef joints, we never are the really regularly but now they seem an extravagance. We eat more mince and chicken thighs and pack things out with veg.

We also buy own brand products where we can although I've gone back to posher tinned tomatoes because I could really tell the difference.

WhatADrabCarpet · 28/07/2023 19:37

Washing powder.

Always used Ariel , husband was allergic to Persil.

Children came along so I used Fairy non bio, only to then discover how many more chemicals were in a non-bio.

Switched to Formil from Lidl... no problems at all.

Used it for many years.

Oh and no UK holidays.

What do you mean? Do you not go on holiday at all or do you find going abroad cheaper?

We do UK holidays but tend to eat the same as we do at home (have three young fussy children so it's a waste eating out!) so other than the actual cost of the holiday it's not much different.

We did go away recently and wanted to try a big new park thing (lilidorei in Alnwick) and it was going to be the best part of £100 for all five of us for three hours, I thought that was ridiculous and we didn't go.

Carbonicalloy · 28/07/2023 20:05

Also keen for good overnight oats recipes @Howmanyweekz , I make a banana and peanut butter one which kids like (on good food) but would like to branch out as even own brand cereals add up with three hungry kids

We mostly ate own brand stuff anyway tbh but recently have cut down on meat, coffee when out and try to cycle to work twice a week instead of using public transport ( only work 3 days)

I mean no "extra" little breaks in the UK - a few days at the Jurassic coast, a few days in Northumberland because everyone says it's nice. It used to be possible to do those at a moderate cost, but now I price it up and think "Nope". It's not even borderline.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 28/07/2023 20:22

I've just changed to cheap supermarket nappies and they are better than the expensive ones I bought before!

I also no longer drink at home and I rarely go out so almost given up drinking. I have lost over 1 stone

DeedlessIndeed · 28/07/2023 20:25

Swapped bad take away addiction for Hello Fresh. Still not the cheapest but actually has saved so much money.

We are now also cutting down the days for Hello Fresh and weaning ourselves back onto home cooking.

Dahlia82 · 28/07/2023 20:26

Ditched my pay monthly phone plan (£45pm). Switched to a Sim only deal (£6.50pm, with more data!)

Stopped drinking/buying booze

We were given lots of pampers nappies when our DD was born 9 weeks ago, she's worn 3 of them and leaked through them within 1.5 hours. Aldi and Asda's own nappies are the best in our opinion!

strongcupofTea · 28/07/2023 20:27

Yep, South London 🙃 it used to be £30-40 and I'd have the leftovers for lunch the next day - no more.

clouddprocess · 28/07/2023 20:31

M & S own brand we've found cheaper than brands. So digestive biscuits (85p ish?) and beans. Just two examples.

Evenstar · 28/07/2023 20:32

We ate at a Pizza Express last week as we were travelling and it was all we could find, £14.95 for a couple of spoonfuls of Carbonara. Like PP we could afford it but will be choosing not to as it is such poor value.

Badbudgeter · 28/07/2023 20:37

I cut out booze. I didn’t drink much but maybe £50 a month on a couple of bottles of wine plus a few gin and tonics in the pub once a month. Takeaway is gone, again not much but once a month £50. Faster internet on a social tariff with bt for 10.07 a month saving nearly £30 a month. Very much every little helps.

I changed jobs and earn £600 a month more too but tbh due to fixed rate mortgage ending, council tax increase ( I got a discount before) energy bill rises plus food bill rises I’m still much poorer than I was last year.

Howmanyweekz · 28/07/2023 20:38

IggysPop · 28/07/2023 19:11

@Howmanyweekz - thinking of moving over to overnight oats. Are they good - do you add much?

I’d say equivalent to cold porridge - I find them more filling though - bbc good have some nice ideas though I just mix in some yoghurt and fruit in the morning

TooOldForThisNonsense · 28/07/2023 20:41

Nothing really.
