Im having a new oil central heating boiler fitted over 3 days, no heating.
Today was the first day, I lasted until about 4pm before digging out some electric heaters before i die from cold!
Temperature peaked around 7 degrees today, far too early to be without heating!

I struggle to understand when people say things like "I like to be warm" or "I refuse to be cold". I don't think anyone would choose to be cold and uncomfortable but heating is now a luxury for many.

A single mum colleague who takes all the overtime she can was talking about putting her heating on as her home was becoming unbearably cold. A well paid manager piped up that they liked to keep their home heated to well in the 20s. Do people actually not realise that a warm home literally isn't a choice for some?

I'm fortunate to be able to absorb the cost of heating but so many are not. So many people right now can't just 'refuse to be cold' and it's sad to see it first hand.

Well said Palmlady

Ours has been off completely for three days and the living room hasn't dropped below 16.8 degrees at night, and stays above 19 for the daytime. We're in Hertfordshire and it's been very very mild so far for February.

morekidsthanhands · 20/02/2023 22:36

Mixed bag here. Haven't had it on last few days.
We are quite lucky that was live in a well insulated new build. And even before the rises I preferred the house at 18 or so.

fetchacloth · 20/02/2023 22:37

No. We're about to have another cold snap.

RoseMartha · 20/02/2023 22:42

No but I only have it on for 30
Mins first thing in the morning and an hour in early evening. Not quite warm
enough to turn off yet. Home is around 18 degrees most the time at the moment.

Nah, even before the fuel crisis MN was full of people claiming they didn't heat their houses and were perfectly toasty at something like 15 degrees. There's always been the 'just put a jumper on' brigade and the 'I turn my heating off on 1st february and don't use it again until 1st of January' crowd.

MillicentTrilbyHiggins · 20/02/2023 23:22

I've only had mine on for a few hours at a time when we had cold snaps. I can't afford any more than that.

Chimna · 20/02/2023 23:28

Mine didn't kick in today. It's set to 17. I've just bought a badly insulated drafty house so you can't really go above 18 or it's on constantly.

Off is the default here. Only put it on if it gets properly cold, which IMO it hasn't been for most of the winter.

Likewise. North West here. Had it on when it was minus 9 a few weeks back but it's been gorgeous weather here the last week and I've been perfectly warm enough with just a blanket over my knees.

gogohmm · 20/02/2023 23:34

Ours turned itself off as it's warm

Comefromaway · 20/02/2023 23:40

Ours goes off automatically on a thermostat when the temperature gets above 19

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 20/02/2023 23:50

Turned it off 2 weeks ago after seeing the bill for Dec/Jan

We have oversized oodie things and are all wafting around the house like Sir Thomas Moore

It's cold. I hate being cold. I can't wait for it to warm up 🥶

IncessantNameChanger · 21/02/2023 00:19

We was coping with 15 in October before it went on so once it stays at 15 it's off..it's set to auto. If we get some warmer days I'm going to try to turn it down again. Out bill was £400 this month. Can no longer offord it. I'm going save to get the rads chemically cleaned before next winter

AlmostAJillSandwich · 21/02/2023 01:08

Had none since my electric fan heater broke right at the start of jan.

Floomobal · 21/02/2023 01:13

We’ve adjusted to a few degrees cooler than last year. Thermostat set to 17.5° and the heating only came on for an hour today. I think it’s definitely warming up, but we’ll have a cold snap again

Many lower income people have always had to keep usage low, which makes it even harder when there is nothing to cut now.

NewBootsAndRanty · 20/02/2023 22:27

I'd prefer to not need to have a temperature of 21° to stay well..

I was fortunate enough to get onto the octopus tracker tariff, so currently paying just over half the standard rate at the moment.

That's good you are on a lower tariff. I was only speaking for our household which has no special heating requirements.

I was saying that many people lower their thermostats due to the cost, not as some people seem to think on mn, to make it a 'competition' 🙄 or because we want to be cold.

Same.

We don’t have ours set to a particular temperature (well, 10 degrees to stop the pipes freezing) but we just turn it on and off as we need to. Haven’t had it “on” for ages now. We just can’t afford it.

sanityisamyth · 20/02/2023 22:30

Haven't put mine on yet!!

This. I can't afford the luxury of heating. I'm super thankful it's so warm, thought it makes me worry for summer. This warmth is abnormal.

I have been thinking this too. I think in the future we will switch from worrying about the cost of heating to the cost of air conditioning instead.

Mine has been off all winter. We have a mid terrace house. The temperature has never fallen below 14. I think the neighbours each side must heat their houses to tropical levels…

Ihavedogs · 21/02/2023 08:35

There are often a few people who say they don’t have the heating on and then at a later point mention the log burner/open fire…

Different people have different households, different heating needs and different budgets. Some people refuse to be cold as low temperatures can severely impact some health conditions and have a negative effect on elderly or disabled household members.

kitcat15 · 21/02/2023 10:10

put Mine on Thursday teatime for 2 hours ( GDs come for tea)…..and a couple of hours on a weekend if kids come over…..apart from that just use log burner ( we get free wood)….our combined bill for the 1st March ( with the 67 discount) is £78….. I still think it’s high to say there’s just 2 of us but it is what it is

GasPanic · 21/02/2023 12:04

This business about turning it "off" and "on" as in permanently for the season is what costs people money.

I have turned mine off for about the past week, because it's been really warm and it's not needed. But I don't expect that to be it for the year. It will go back on again when it is needed - looking at the weather forecast it is looking like it will get colder overnight, but not too bad over the next 2 weeks, and will probably need to be on a little, maybe 1-2 hours per day.

Keeping it on because "there's a cold snap coming" doesn't make any sense to me. I'd rather keep it off now while the house is 18C, and then turn it on for extra time when and if the cold snap arrives.
