December Bill - GULP

MrsDoyle351 · 27/12/2022 08:34

Yeah - I knew it was going to be high... 4 bedroom semi detached stone house.

£314 for gas and electricity. No doubt January will be similar - unless it warms up a bit?

Been putting on the heating from 16.30 til 20.00 most days - obviously more over past weekend...

OP posts:

£525 for Dec 😭. 5 bed detached, heating generally on an hour in morning, 4-9 evenings. And we have a wood burner too which is generally just on at the weekends.

I should say there are 5 of us, 3 teens (eldest is away at Uni but came back mid Dec with mountains of laundry).

Just gone up to 300 per month here, single parent, small well insulated end of terrace.

With other costs going up too, this is pushing me right to the edge.

How many people? What's your epc rating? Do you know what is driving up your usage? Are you electric only? The average under the cap would be £200 a month so I'd expect the property you describe to be in line with that.

stellarspiral · 31/12/2022 10:55

Just submitted our readings and December is up to £315 for us. All electric, large 3 bed apartment. Hoping that will be lower again in January as we had visitors and lots of using dishwasher/washing machine on the day rate. And cold snap then elderly visitors, meant storage heaters kept on max a lot of the month.

Really annoyed to see that Economy 7 is going up disproportionately in Jan though. 8% for us. Seems counterintuitive as surely it's in the energy companies/government interest to encourage people to use off peak. And this will likely push more people to change to single rate. I need to work out what our bill would be on that now using the kWh.

I have economy 7 too and wondering what to do about this.

@Athenen0ctua i have new gen storage heaters, an electric work car and a radon extraction fan, so could be any of those
.

Robin233 · 31/12/2022 12:03

I'm with EDF and our economy 7 is going down in jan (day time up 5p) and is more than other day rate.
But this suits us as a all electric house - well insulated with very good storage heaters.
We do have solor too so are very lucky.

Onegingerhead · 31/12/2022 12:05

Just submitted our readings. Electricity isn’t too bad, we always somehow manage on between 120 and 150 kWh per month. Gas is awful.
147 kWh leccy
929 kWh gas (converted from m3). But it does include the cold spell so hoping to have less than that in January.
3 bed semi, 2005 built.
2 adults, one DC and one cat

That explains it, I guess if you took off what you are saving in petrol then it would look more reasonable?

OhmygodDont · 31/12/2022 13:44

We have used without standing charge and vat around £150 in gas alone but we have all been in sick too so erm yeah time to up the dd I guess

Whyislifesohardsometimes · 31/12/2022 13:51

My bill 25Nov to 24Dec was £180 for both gas and electric. Heating has been on most days but only in the evening. 3 bed detached, 2 adults and a teen, up £90 on same time last year, with considerable less usage.

FlowersareEverything · 31/12/2022 14:03

Gas £209 and electricity £150, so £359. Heating set to 17 in the daytime and to stay above 14.5 overnight. The thermostat is in the hall, so the actual temperature in the living room and bedrooms is around 19 in the day. Three bedroomed insulated and double glazed mid terrace.

LaurieFairyCake · 31/12/2022 14:17

2 bed flat - was £470

The bastards are ripping us off! Why are we putting up with this?!

Yup WHY are we putting up with it? Because the majority of people are terrified of having no domestic power. People in the UK need to take a stand before the Tories kill us all off .

I agree. They are sadists that just like to watch us suffer. I have seen zero evidence of protests against energy prices in the news. No attempt by the government to modernise our energy system and invest in renewable resources. Why are they managing this so badly?

BeyondTheLetterOfTheLawTheLetter · 31/12/2022 16:00

If I were young, healthy and alone, I probably would use the literal bare minimum out of sheer spite towards the energy companies.

Unfortunately I'm not young, healthy or alone, so have no choice but to heat the house and provide the electric for my health needs and children 😕

ThatsRoughBuddy · 31/12/2022 19:31

I think I was the last person in the UK to get a good deal back in March! So mine is £101 combined gas and electricity bill.

279 kWh electric
725 kWh gas

Used twice as much gas as last month. Shock And that’s with us having a broken boiler for 5 days!

WhiteFire · 31/12/2022 20:11

Just submitted my readings, over £500 this month.

My electric usage stays pretty static, but used a lot more gas this month. We did have a few days without a boiler last month, but used the gas fire instead. It must have just clicked in more this month.

mac1974 · 01/01/2023 00:51

Ours was just over £500. 4 bed semi but not a massive house to be honest. However we had problems with the heating due to building works & it was very very cold for half of the month so really hoping that January will be closer to £300. It's disgusting the way prices have been allowed to rise.

Blondeshavemorefun · 01/01/2023 09:05

I will post in a few days once have our dec /Jan bill but have visions of £500 if last one was £354

Athenen0ctua · 01/01/2023 09:06

£112 for December. We are on a fix close to the price guarantee, should be over £120.

TheDietStartsTomorrowOrMaybeTheDayAfter · 01/01/2023 17:58

£72 for December (this is after taking into account the £66 from the government)

It’s a well insulated one year old 4 bed detached new build. 4 adults with 3 who WFH. We have the thermostat set to 20 degrees and it just clicks on and off as needed. We’re all electric here.

Mum2jenny · 01/01/2023 18:04

Just under £300 for the last 30 days, gas and elec. Used to be much less than that for the winter quarter.

Wigeon · 01/01/2023 20:53

£585 for December for a 4 bed end of terrace Victorian with 4 of us in it (2 adults, 2 secondary school aged children) - properly shocked, since we try to use the heating as little as possible, turn off lights etc religiously, only run the dishwasher / washing machine when full, don’t have a stupid amount of long showers etc etc.

Only just moved in, and we knew the EPC was quite bad. Also 20 year old boiler probably explains some of the cost. But it’s hard to see how we could cut our usage further. Have just turned off the underfloor heating in the kitchen to see if that makes a difference (it was only set to be on for fixed periods morning and evening, but we will see if we can manage without it at all. No other heating in there, but it is connected to the dining room so hopefully gets some heat from that (plus gets warmer when we cook).

Wow! That's unbelievably low given the weather earlier in December. Presume that's still a fixed deal?!

Yes, that's very low. My bill came through this morning (much quicker than normal, they usually take ages to review the gas calculation) at £110, so £43 after the £67 help. We are on a fix but just below the cap, should have been £120. However, it's just two of us in a 10 year old new build three bed semi, and we don't wfh or keep the house that warm!

Celeryfavour · 02/01/2023 09:41

£124 (1122 kWh) gas and £58 (135 kWh) electricity in a 3 bed house. Usually only have the heating on a couple of hours a day at 16, but in the cold snap I left it on all the time to avoid pipes freezing. I have been very cold at times.
