December Bill - GULP

MrsDoyle351 · 27/12/2022 08:34

Yeah - I knew it was going to be high... 4 bedroom semi detached stone house.

£314 for gas and electricity. No doubt January will be similar - unless it warms up a bit?

Been putting on the heating from 16.30 til 20.00 most days - obviously more over past weekend...

Pelo22 · 30/12/2022 13:09

@cakeorwine it says I use 4.5kwh electric daily and 2.28kwh gas (the gas went up to 10kwh daily when it was cold)

RedPost · 30/12/2022 13:10

Considering how cold December was that doesn't actually seem so bad to me..

CriticalAlert · 30/12/2022 13:14

I can't believe we're all living in dread of heating bills. This isn't living it's just existing. I can't go on much longer like this because it's all going to get worse. We can't afford to live. I actually feel that being dead would be better than having this perpetual worry about money.

BeyondTheLetterOfTheLawTheLetter · 30/12/2022 13:20

Mines just above £300, which is pretty much what I was expecting. £180 dd plus the £66 gov money means that is only going to use about £60-70ish out of my £600 credit.

But as said by a few people upthread, the worst part is spending that much and still feeling cold 😕 (my heating is normally on for three hours in the morning and three at night, so right now it's a bit nippy)

How do you heat water and cook?
Both those things require energy - either electric or gas, and that electric use is very low if you are using electricity to heat water or cook.

Pelo22 · 30/12/2022 13:47

@cakeorwine gas combi boiler
Gas hob, electric oven, air fryer or microwave
My electric usage has always been low (I've lived here for 16 years and the highest it's ever been is 5.5kwh a day)
Live alone

I think mine could be close to £1000 after a fiasco of finding a bedroom window had been left open during the recent cold spell! It was in the dormer bedroom with direct access to the stairs and hall - I keep bedroom door open to allow air circulation to prevent damp problems.

i could not work out why my heating was struggling to get the house up to temperature, set at 18° and the boiler was running all the time, plus it was freezing overnight when it was not on! As my heating was set to be on from 7am to 10pm ( I am at home all day and have mobility issues so do not move around much), I know my bill will be horrendous.

I am being a coward though and have not read my meter to work out what I owe, I’m keeping the temp at 18° with no boosting to try to keep costs a bit lower going forward but I suspect I will be raiding my savings when I get my next bill! I plan to pay off some of it immediately rather than wait for BG to increase my direct debit to clear the deficit.

Alainlechat · 30/12/2022 14:41

Close to £400 for a average size bungalow, 530 kw for electric and 1800 kw for gas.

Need to work out why we are using so much electric really, although we are a family of 5 with dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer on most days still looks way above what most people are using.

Blondeshavemorefun · 30/12/2022 19:02

£354 was our nov to dec

dreading dec to Jan

runs 8th to 8th

so have the 2 very cold weeks /snow in it

Xenia · 30/12/2022 20:14

£936 for December (detached house, 2 boilers) due in early Jan. Like most people it is double what it normally would be. I am invoiced based on the meter reading for that month so at least I can see what it is based on use I suppose....

Gobimanchurian · 31/12/2022 05:09

£525 for Dec 😭. 5 bed detached, heating generally on an hour in morning, 4-9 evenings. And we have a wood burner too which is generally just on at the weekends.

user1489844432 · 31/12/2022 08:54

£481. 2 adults one child in 3 bed Victorian semi.

kimlo · 31/12/2022 09:06

Spent £320 for the month.

Octopus thought I would use £440 for the month. I'm still in credit, just. But the government help should be added soon then my dd will be paid not long after.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 31/12/2022 09:09

£434 for electricity (we don't have gas). Three bed terraced 70s house with a two adults and two teens. We have storage heaters and about half the bill is due to that.

Dougieowner · 31/12/2022 09:33

Always submit readings on 30th and get the statement a few hours later (have a SM but my supplier would issue the statement on 5th if I didn't preempt it myself).

Total for Dec is £210 G&E (Inc SC but excluding Gov Sub) so our DD of £200 has it well covered.

Was wondering what it would be as we have been here less than a year and have no experience of how the house would perform in the cold weather (4-bed det newbuild with me perm WFH) and after reading some of the comments on here I am relieved. It is the highest bill we have ever had for a month but is manageable.

Athenen0ctua · 31/12/2022 09:39

Up to £110 here with a day to go, based on rough x11 gas conversion. Was expecting worse with the earlier cold weather but the heating has barely clicked on this last week.

Haveagentlechristmas · 31/12/2022 09:42

The bastards are ripping us off! Why are we putting up with this?!

ColinRobinsonsfamiliar · 31/12/2022 09:45

my stomach is in knots because I have had to use the tumble dryer 4 times as we are having building work done and can’t access the radiators to dry the washing.
It’s going to be much more this month.
I already pay £490 per month for gas and electricity for our tiny 3 bedroom semi.

What do you suggest that we do about it?

Do you mean a dd of £490? That's extremely high for your house size, assume something unusual like medical equipment or high energy needs due to disability?

What do you think the tumble dryer will cost?

Is that your DD? Even with the increased costs, that still seems a lot for the property you describe. Do you know what you think it goes on ?

teenagetantrums · 31/12/2022 09:53

I'm not looking. Our gas smart meter isn't smart and they can't fix it apparently. Electric was £50 ish for last month. I need to read the gas meter at some point. Luckily we have built up credit which should pay for winter bills. We are with eon and as DD was £66 a month they are not taking it due to the government help. When our credit is gone l will start paying again. I feel for those with disabled family members who have to have the heating on all the time.

Happygirl79 · 31/12/2022 10:01

We are being ripped off. The government will have backers who benefit from these high energy prices.

I can't wait to get this government out. We are being bled dry.

Single pensioner. Living alone. Gross annual income 14k.

Don't get pension credits as saved in AVCs to my works pension and this has taken my income above threshold. In my 70s . Energy bills currently 19% of my monthly income. Switched off at night. Only on for perhaps 5 hours daily.
Dire. This is barely existing not living

Decafflatteplease · 31/12/2022 10:09

Weve just had ours, I did a rough estimate with meter readings and I was fairly accurate so I'm pleased 😂

Our is pretty much bang on £400 for December 😱 £250 of gas and £150 of electricity.

We pay £300 a month so will start to use our credit this month that we have built up.

Bit worried about next year as our prices increase in Jan (coming off a fix) so we won't have as much credit this time next eplus no discount after April 😱

Haveagentlechristmas · 31/12/2022 10:41

Just gone up to 300 per month here, single parent, small well insulated end of terrace.

With other costs going up too, this is pushing me right to the edge.
