December Bill - GULP

MrsDoyle351 · 27/12/2022 08:34

Yeah - I knew it was going to be high... 4 bedroom semi detached stone house.

£314 for gas and electricity. No doubt January will be similar - unless it warms up a bit?

Been putting on the heating from 16.30 til 20.00 most days - obviously more over past weekend...

OP posts:
ivykaty44 · 29/12/2022 21:17

my total is £267 for the month, a lot less gas used this past week as the temperature has been so much higher.

I was away for 2 days and as the temperature was going to be around 10 degrees, I just turned the gas CH off as no point heating an empty house when its not going to freeze.

Came back in the evening and within 45 minutes the house was nice and warm with the heating popped on.

NewBootsAndRanty · 29/12/2022 21:20

Mine's looking like it's going to be about £240 altogether for my 1 bed flat - heating on all the time.

FusionChefGeoff · 29/12/2022 21:23

Pelo22 · 28/12/2022 17:35

Not too bad for me
Averaging £3 for electric a day and £8 for gas and that was the coldest days
My £45 DD is covering it (plus the £66 credit)

How?! That's £330 consumption a month but only £111 payment - either you must have a large credit to use or a big bill coming...

@Pleo22, your maths is out quite considerably or there is something you aren’t telling us.

£45 +£66= £111 doesn't hot the sides of £3 electric and £8 gas = £330 pm. OK you might reduce gas a bit now its milder but you are in for a shock....

grannycake · 30/12/2022 07:26

Mine was £90.69 (225 KW) for elec - more than normal but more oven use due to Christmas cooking & £210.41 (1944 kw)gas. This was for 28/11/22 to 29/12/23. It didn't help that our thermostat broke down in December and I can't have the new one fitted until 12th January. No heating over night then about 3 hours first thing and another hour at lunchtime We have a logburner in the evening

whirlyhead · 30/12/2022 07:35

£440 here for December which is for a well insulated 3-bed terrace with 2 adults only, and heating on only 4 hours a day. My biggie is the electricity bill as my green energy provider charges 66p per kWh (though I get a bit of a discount thanks to the government energy scheme)

Marmite27 · 30/12/2022 07:43

We’re a single skin, 3 bed end terrace and ours was £249.48 so I don’t think yours is too bad.

we had the heating on a lot less, but have a log burner in the main living space. We also have new windows, but need to run a dehumidifier due to excess moisture.

Saucery · 30/12/2022 08:05

@cakeorwine 170kWh for the quarter (Jul to Dec, covering low use summer months) so It shows that it quadrupled from Oct when we switched our shower from electric to boiler and had the heating on a lot more, plus 2 gas fires, so it’s accurately reflecting usage. No deal, no fixed tariff. Maybe I’m just more sparing with the heating (and showers) than I thought I was!

July- Dec is not a quarter!

We have gas for water, cooking and heating. We have an electric shower but have hot water on demand
In July itself , we used 170 kWh - so that's going to be mainly baths, cooking (including oven)

When we were away, the boiler was still on and it occasionally fires up just to keep itself working. So we used about 2kWh per day when we away

Saucery · 30/12/2022 08:58

🤦‍♀️ no, it’s not a quarter, is it? Anyway, for that period we used 170kWh. Until the end of Oct that was just for running hot water for washing up and hand washing, small amount of gas hob use. Oven is electric. Heating wasn’t on hardly until then, either. 3 weeks away where we turn off boiler completely, heating adjusted manually not on a timer that we leave on whatever the temp.
I think it’s suspiciously low, too, but given BG are running an absolute racket with their wildly inflated DDs there’s over £600 they have already to absorb any price rises or mistakes.
I think I will sign up to online account, so I can submit more regular meter readings. Having them pop in twice a year if we are around on the day they visit leaves too much margin for error. And no, I will not be getting a smart meter Wink

Suzi888 · 30/12/2022 08:59

DM’s is £600. Not sure what ours is, haven’t looked!

TimeToFlyNow · 30/12/2022 09:05

Im on a pre payment meter and it's now at £250ish for 30 days . I started work in November after being a carer for ds for the last 10 years, don't know how people on benefits are managing. It's still not tht warm in here even though the gas is now at £120 a month. Wfh wasn't very comfortable when it was really cold a few weeks ago

PeasInOurTime · 30/12/2022 09:07

Our bill comes out on 27th. 5 bed granite house, 6 of us inc 2 wfh. Dual fuel.

To 27 Nov was £427.93
To 27 Dec was £585.19.

the electricity usage is pretty consistent each month so the jump is mostly gas from the heating during the cold snap. I could honestly cry.

Saucery · 30/12/2022 10:21

Okay, so that was enlightening Hmm
Signed up to BG online and the statement/payment schedule bears very little resemblance to the printed statement we received! Payment taken the day after the paper statement was much more in line with what I would have expected for a draughty old house and 3 boiler-powered showers a day.
I’ll be submitting meter readings monthly because they’ve only read it once in the last 3 years and never ask us to submit our own.

Oh

This is why I like my Smart Meter - now on half hourly readings and can clearly see what's being used.

Saucery · 30/12/2022 10:29

I’m not keen on Smart Meters but I appreciate some people find them helpful. I know having the heating on and a long shower costs more than not having those things, I would just like some more transparency with billing. But then this is BG we’re talking about so no hope of that, unfortunately.

3WildOnes · 30/12/2022 10:35

Ours is around £600ish for the past month. Our direct debit is £250 a month but as we were using under £100 a month in the summer we still have a large credit.

We live in an old detached house with little insulation.

ifonly4 · 30/12/2022 11:03

Nov - £118.88
Dec - £259.94

December bill not really a surprise as we it was between -7c and -10c a few nights. Also, DD came home from uni mid month so we have an extra person in house using extra hot water and electricity.

Live in a converted and extended bungalow with dormers, making a four bed.

Freeasabird76 · 30/12/2022 11:09

Single mum with single income,£253 this month and still bloody cold here.

Oohahhalittlebitmore · 30/12/2022 11:18

3 bed 50’s build. I know the loft insulation needs re doing but the windows, doors & heating are all relatively new.

Just looked on our smart meter & combined shows £235.53.
heating set around 17 through the day, occasional nudge up to 19 ish if really feeling the chill. Lowered to 15.5 over night.
Dehumidifier has been in a fair bit recently as there has been loads of washing.

I’m constantly cold.

Pelo22 · 30/12/2022 11:25

@FlutterbButterfly I didn't phrase that right at all (have covid and my brain is mush!)
The coldest days that was my usage (£8)

On a "normal" day I've been using £3 electric and virtually no gas (about £1) which is why my DD covers it and usually leaves a tiny bit of credit. I give readings every week

Spectre8 · 30/12/2022 11:31

Headed back to office in October full time which chipped away at daily spend so I was averaging £90 a month October abmnd November and my dad is £150 which includes my £66 credit.

December was in office until annual leave and strikes, my bill this month is £180 as heating went on more during cold week.

So hoping the spare left over from oct and Nov covers the additional in dec.

3 bed terrace.

Had I been wfh l day everyday I know my bills would have been far higher but being out of the house from 7am to 6pm made a huge difference on my heating requirements.

How do you heat water and cook?

Both those things use a lot of energy - either electric or gas.
What's your predicted annual usage in kWh?

£3 per day x 365 = £1095
-£400 = £695

£695/12 = £57

So that's £57 a month just on electricity after you take off the £400

And that's without gas costs included

Your £45 DD might need looking at - unless you have a lot of credit

Suzie0003 · 30/12/2022 13:07

4 bed detached house with gas central heating.

Oct £100
Nov £160
Dec £210

These are gas and electricity combined. I work from home 5 days a week 😔
