I've been quite frugal with gas and electricity this month but it's still £220! Help!

Is that your actual usage?

Outtasteamandluck · 21/12/2022 18:05

Mine was £283

cakeorwine · 21/12/2022 18:05

Unfortunately that's the cost - but it has been a cold few weeks.

Do you track your usage regularly?

BMW6 · 21/12/2022 18:08

Think my gas bill is going to be around that this month. Was £89 last month.

Mrshanklee · 21/12/2022 18:25

Mine will be about £400 I think.

MissisBoote · 21/12/2022 18:29

Ours was £470 Shock

£330 of that was gas.

Heating had been on for 4 hours a day as we were getting mould. It's now gone down to 2 hours a day. We're a 2 bed semi so nothing extravagant.

Genuinely don't know how people are going to manage this winter.

SeasonsBleatings · 21/12/2022 18:30

Mine was £380. I had done some calcs based on useage last year and the new prices so it wasn't a surprise.

pompomdaisy · 21/12/2022 18:32

Mine was £245. It is December!

IamChipmunk · 21/12/2022 18:34

Ours was over £400 😣

Passthecake30 · 21/12/2022 18:35

Mine was £322 actual usage. I was equally stunned as felt like I’d taken measures to reduce my usage. It was -8c here last week however and the boiler took ages warming up the house. Hopefully that was the worst of the weather!

Crazykefir · 21/12/2022 18:37

Yes my duel fuel was 600 for 10 week and thst was estimated.

ElfDragon · 21/12/2022 18:38

Mine is going to be horrendous this month. Was doing fine with hearing set to 17, until the cold snap, and then had to turn it up a bit as that just wasn’t getting the house above freezing. From a quick look at the meter, I’ve used as much gas/elec in the first 3 weeks of December as I did across the whole of October and November. That’s not going to be cheap, but as other posters have said, it is December, and we just had a really cold spell. Hopefully it’ll settle down a bit, and won’t be as cold for the rest of winter

Jackie17177 · 21/12/2022 18:38

Mine was just under £300. Actual usage. Thankfully I had some credit but I have been trying really hard to keep costs low - timers on showers, being thoughtful about the cheapest way to cook dinner... using a dehumidifer instead of the tumble drier. Turning off lights and being just careful! It's all better for the environment. I am dreading next December!

NewBootsAndRanty · 21/12/2022 18:39

That'll account for about £20 of your monthly dd if you pay equal instalments over the year.

dudsville · 21/12/2022 18:39

Yeah. It's frightening isn't it. We're still in our float, the amount we had paid forward to the energy provider (why does this happen withthem and no other service????). When we get to the end of that, around feb/mar, it will be super cold. It's scary how many people are going to go without heat because of this. My household will be ok, but we've already had moudl growing on bedroom walls.

Assuming you are paying 10.7p per kWh for gas, that is over 3000 kWh for gas.

Despite the very cold weather recently we are on course to use what we spent last December, 1000 kWh. We were skimping then either as it was only 4p a kWh.

We have a normal 2 bed semi too, home all day.

Mumtqxidiamond · 21/12/2022 18:41

We’ve been taking readings weekly .. start of November was £107 , last week when it seemed to be minus 5 a lot of the time £187 .. it’s been eye opening

Tukmgru · 21/12/2022 18:43

I am really sorry this is happening to everyone. There’s really only one thing to do though, which is if you have a Tory MP then campaign locally to get people to vote against them - and email telling them you’re going to - or if you don’t have a Tory MP then do whatever you can to keep it that way. If it’s a super safe non Tory seat, or a two way marginal where the tories come third or fourth, find a way to campaign somewhere else. Phonebanks can be done from home, and every conversation counts.

it is there fault. Nowhere else in Europe is suffering as badly as the UK, though they will claim they are.

I have been a member of two parties in my time as an adult, and now am not a member of any. But I will happily take Labour, Lab-Lib-SNP-Green or any mix to kick these absolute cretins out.

Anyone who still votes Tory - somehow still polling at a quarter of voters - has no right to complain about anything that’s happening. Fuck ‘em.

bloodyeverlastinghell · 21/12/2022 18:45

My electricity is £253 then they return £66 a week later. I was paying £80 a month last year.

cakeorwine · 21/12/2022 18:45

Last month we used 885 kWh gas - so about £88

This month so far we have used 1000 kWh gas - about £100

We can really see the difference over the last cold week - and the difference the last few days has made.

We live in a flat so that does really help. I feel for people who have larger places but who are struggling to afford it.

I do monitor my usage.

Do you know your annual usage / predicted annual usage?

If you know that, you should be able to predict your costs for the next year.

Winter months will be high, summer months low

mattyprice4004 · 21/12/2022 18:49

Unfortunately there’s not much people can do to help - apart from recommending you use less energy by wrapping up warm and dropping the heating a few degrees.

Use this coming summer as an opportunity to insulate your home - there’s some fantastic guides out there.

Our actual use for the last month is £310 😑

Yes, we're on the cap.

I'll check my meter readings - it'd be good to compare with a similar sized house.

reddA · 21/12/2022 18:51

I'm so puzzled by all of these amounts, I moved into this large 3 bed rented house in April, it had a Pre Payment meter a Boost smart one that you top up online, I'd always been with British Gas and was worried about extra costs but BG wanted a ridiculous deposit even though I was a previous customer so I stayed with Boost. November was £86.30 electric and £37.58 gas, so far this month it's £72.50 electric £35.96 gas and then I get the £67 to use towards these! I work from home and have the thermostat at 18-19.5, they updated the smart meter so I assume it's right but it seems cheaper than even in previous years with the government help. Are these posts for actual usage?

Wronglane · 21/12/2022 18:53

Mine was over £400
