I've been quite frugal with gas and electricity this month but it's still £220! Help!

It's bloody winter. Prices have more than doubled, what the bloody hell did you expect.

Pootle40 · 21/12/2022 20:43

Mine was £316! (Pre £67 deduction)

UnfinishedUserna · 21/12/2022 18:54

My actual usage was £306 Blush and I thought I was being tight with the heating!

Same. Our Hive showed even on the -6c we used 5 hours of heating. Otherwise normally 3 hours a day.

popcornfrenzy · 21/12/2022 20:46

I’ve added my breakdown - I’m on a fixed tariff for electricity but not gas. I know others have it worse than me 😟

Assuming you are paying 10.7p per kWh for gas, that is over 3000 kWh for gas.

Despite the very cold weather recently we are on course to use what we spent last December, 1000 kWh. We were skimping then either as it was only 4p a kWh.

We have a normal 2 bed semi too, home all day.

We are in a three bed semi, was hoping for 600kwh but on course for 700kwh after the cold weather. November was 300kwh.

OP if you deduct the £66 help from the government that works out at £166 a month. Divide that by 30 days and that is roughly £5.47 a day for energy for the last month. Considering we have had a very cold spell I don't think that's too bad.

KittyBurrito · 21/12/2022 21:13

Ours was about £350 and we thought we were being super tight! Thermostat set to 17 eves only, 14 during day, despite both WFH. Woolly hats on whilst working. Short showers only, no tumble drier. More than double our previous bills for 4 bed family house, with much less energy use.

Depends what you earn as to whether it's bad or not. If you are averaging £50 a day after tax and NI then that's quite a lot.

I suppose it's the bigger annual picture - these are going to be the expensive months.

But we don't know what next year will bring - and I think energy is going to cost more than this quarter.

My usage is very low and I'm still looking at 6% of my take home pay over the year at current rates. Then it'll go up by 20% I expect, but my pay won't. Hoping for more news on this £900 COL payment.

CampervanKween · 21/12/2022 22:16

Mine was £270. That works out at £10 a day to keep 5 of us warm, dry, fed and entertained. That's how I decided to look at it. I'd rather be warm and cut back on other areas for this short period of time.

OnTheBoardwalk · 21/12/2022 22:20

I’m in credit and am expecting my bills to be high this month and use this credit

a friend did stop her payment because of built up credit and is panicking this month

lifeisacat · 21/12/2022 22:28

Mines £210 and the month isn't over yet 😭
My heating goes on twice a day for an hour, hot water on once a day. I haven't used tumble dryer, oven and all lights are on timers.

NewBootsAndRanty · 21/12/2022 20:21

Your workings definitely sound wrong @Curlygirl06

Hence why I checked. I get bills 6 monthly from EDF, and although I give monthly readings they don't show in the app, it's only when I get the bill.
With all the changes and increases last year, I calculated the bill every time it changed and every time I sent in a reading, and when the bill arrived I was about £20 out over 6 months so my calculations are correct.

Curlygirl06 · 21/12/2022 22:49

reddA · 21/12/2022 20:25

@Curlygirl06 yeah tumble dryer here too - I find the kettle uses the most electric, we have fans on too - me all night due to menopause and lodger all day due to working nights so stops any noise. DD back from uni also so more showers - electric so that adds up but still low overall and it confuses me more than anything.

Yep me too. We have gas heated water rather than electric for showers so that's cheaper. I take a photo of the gas meter every day and we use about .83 units of gas a day on our usual usage. Our meter is ft3, not mtr3.
Our electric has gone up since using the oil filled radiators, which is to be expected but I haven't had them on for long enough to factor in the extra usage. Mind you, we're now turning everything off at the plug if not being used apart from the fridge and freezer and the router. That's saved a bit.

NewBootsAndRanty · 21/12/2022 22:49

Hang on - do you mean from the 14 December up to today? I read your post as meaning usage from the November bill up to now.
If it's since December then that sounds more likely; average it out into daily useage and you'll be looking at about £190 for a month.

Yes, just read it back and I got my dates wrong, it's been a long day, sorry! 14th Nov to 14th December was 174, 14th Dec to today was £25 and £19 for electric and gas- I wish it had been that low since 14th November!!

Karmatime · 22/12/2022 07:28

I’ve just done mine for the last month - £136 gas and £80 electric. Last month was £60 and £60. I can understand the gas more than doubling as we’d hardly had the heating on until mid November and it was on about 5 to 6 hours a day during the cold snap. I don’t understand the electric increase though? My account is still in credit but that will be gone by the end of Jan. We are moving in Jan otherwise I’d up my dd so it’s not too much of an increase in April when prices go up and the government subsidy stops.

LaurelGrove · 22/12/2022 07:34

£440. It's horrifying but not a surprise - when it was really cold I couldn't get the house up to a decent temperature. I'm quite stingy with the heating and we aren't home during the weekday using electricity.
What is depressing is that I've spent a lot of money on better insulation this year - it's still not helping with a cold house very much but has made a bit of a difference. And yet that is still the bill. Fortunately we have a lot of credit with Bulb. But still.

Minimalme · 22/12/2022 08:13

Our heating has been on throughout the day for the last three weeks.

We have a disabled child who has been out of school for two months. His room gets mouldy and I can't have him sat all day in a mouldy cold room.

We are in rented accommodation and are moving 200 miles up north because we can't afford to live in the South East anymore.

Luckily, dh has family up there. We have stayed in this area where I grew up, for jobs mainly, but all that has changed so it makes no sense to stay. I wish we'd done it years ago.

IToldYouAmillionTimesAlready · 22/12/2022 08:15

My energy bill is £191 a month, DD

AuntieMarys · 22/12/2022 08:17

£350 for us. Used significantly less than last year but bill £150 more.
We are massively in credit, so if our bills are up to £400 for next 4 months, we won't have to pay extra.

MyBooksAndMyCats · 22/12/2022 08:24

£260 I've spent so far in 30 days, prepayment. 😭 it's going up again January & again in April!
How the heck they think we can afford another two price increases is beyond me!

sarahc336 · 22/12/2022 15:56

I've just told mines going up to £400 😬😬😬 3 bed semi. We have probably had the heating on a bit more than I'd hoped, I felt we had cut back but secretly I feel we can cut back more but I hate living in a cold damp house 🙄

MoggyMittens23 · 22/12/2022 16:38

Ours was just under £500 this month. And we've been trying to be careful. I would be buzzing if ours was £220!
