I've been quite frugal with gas and electricity this month but it's still £220! Help!

That is obviously high compared to say, 2-3 years ago, but not as much as some. Ours is around £160-175 a month right now, (gas and electric combined,) and we live in a small cottage, with only me and DH, a new-ish heating system, and good insulation.

So @popcornfrenzy £225 doesn't sound massive THESE days with all the rises in energy bills. I am assuming you have the £66 a month towards it from the government? If not why not?

My gas rate is 16.87p per kWh and electricity 66.38p. Yay for being with a green energy provider to whom the price cap doesn’t apply!

That is INSANE. What a nightmare!!

Although the price cap does not apply, they should still get up to 4p off gas and 17p off electric with the energy price guarantee. I was with a green supplier but jumped ship in February as my rates had gone up to 7p and 34p early.

Ours was £400 actual usage this month. We have the thermostat at 18 or below, use the tumble drier only after things have been airing for a day, double glazing, loft insulation, a+ rated appliances, new boiler, the whole lot. Total joke.

How much of that was gas Vs electric?

Have you checked your boiler configuration - e.g. flow temperature?

Do you have LED lightbulbs? Sainsbury's recently 'reduced to clear' in my local store - £1.50 for two bulbs.

Setyoufree · 24/12/2022 14:13

Not sure on breakdown, will have a look. Yep all LED lightbulbs. We have a good plumber and boiler's only a couple of years old so it'll all be set up ok I reckon. We're in the fortunate position that we can afford it (though obviously there's 100000 other things I can think of to spend the money on that would be more fun) but it makes me really worry for others who don't have headroom to absorb that/stuck in badly maintained rented houses with bad white goods etc :(

£400 is more than double our useage, I’m in most of every day, the heating’s kicking in and out all day, bath or showers every other day.
Electricity is currently @ £3 a day / 8-10 kwh.
Gas was £5.50ish a day during the cold snap, now it’s more like £2.50-£3.00.

GoldCherub · 24/12/2022 20:36

£480 actual usage for Dec. 18 upstairs and 20 downstairs. £67 comes off of the £480.

That's great at this time of year. A lot comes down to the size and age of properties though. A modern two bed terrace will typically be much more energy efficient than a Victorian 5 bed semi with cellars.
