I've been quite frugal with gas and electricity this month but it's still £220! Help!

Mine was £336 with £250 of that for electric. We have an EV car though.

RewildingAmbridge · 22/12/2022 16:41

Smart meter says £286 so far and our billing date is the 5th so likely to be over £400. It's currently chilly indoors. No heating on, don't use a tumble dryer. We did have the heating on during the day during the really cold snap but only set to 18/19

Caraoke · 22/12/2022 16:49

Mine was £320 for the month of November, a small 3 bed mid terrace hoise. Can only dread what its going to be for December after all that -7 weather when we were at home all day too because we were sick!

Teapleasebobb · 22/12/2022 16:57

Just submitted my meter readings for the last 6 weeks, it came to £675, so roughly working out at £450 per month. October's bill worked out at £320, so you can definitely see a high difference having the heating on more has made Sad

IToldYouAmillionTimesAlready · 22/12/2022 08:15

My energy bill is £191 a month, DD

Have you submitted any recent readings - do you know if your predicted usage has changed as this could affect your DD

Athenen0ctua · 22/12/2022 17:57

This warmer weather has been such a relief. Heating clicked on at 17:30 and shortly hit temperature, must have been 20 minutes later! Timed for two hours.

Cynderella · 22/12/2022 19:13

I've been super frugal this year compared to past winters, but December is likely to be £300.

I've built up a credit balance that will see me through this winter. Next year will be worse, and so I really hope we have a warm spring.

NoelNoNoel · 23/12/2022 08:46

Mine averaged out at £300 per month, I don’t check actual monthly usage.

ivykaty44 · 23/12/2022 12:24

my actual usage for the month so far is £220, its been cold for a week Wirth temperatures down to -9 so the boiler has worked much harder to keep the temperature at 17 degrees. This week I've noticed a distinct difference as the boiler has not been kicking in every 5 minutes.

BorgQueen · 23/12/2022 18:28

Ours is a 3 bed 1970’s semi, not as insulated as it could be loft wise, a mix of old 90’s double glazing and a few newer windows, newish boiler / old radiators.
Even with the heating set at 19° day and 16° overnight last week when it was minus 9°, we used £3.50 electric ( there is a 600w oil radiator in the unheated kitchen on low all night) and £6 Gas daily , it’s now dropped to under £3 for Gas as the weather has warmed up a bit.
I also found a huge hole above our new Consumer unit in the hall at the weekend, letting freezing air in 😡 now it’s filled with rockwool.
People have either got really poorly insulated houses or their boilers/ central heating systems aren’t properly set up, if they are using such massive amounts.

Zedcarz · 23/12/2022 18:29

Mine was the same. Despite all the warnings and media hysteria it was still a shock to see such a huge jump in my usage, tallied with meter readings too!

NeedAHoliday2021 · 23/12/2022 18:41

I see these threads and think Eon must have messed our bill up. It’s £156 a month - 4 double bedroom home with 3 reception rooms and a hot tub. Dh works from home too. We’re still in credit according to the app.

What's your predicted annual usage?
That does sound very cheap.

NeedAHoliday2021 · 23/12/2022 19:26

I’ll check when dh gets in as the app is on his phone. He does the monthly readings.

We’re a house of 5 people including dc who use every light in the house and charge their phones etc. I’m assuming it’ll jump but don’t understand why it hasn’t so far.

cakeorwine · 23/12/2022 19:39

For context:

2 bed flat, me and DS - we are low users
Electricity - predicted - 1400 kWh - so about £476
Gas - predicted - 7500 kWH - so about £750

Plus standing charges - about £273 - and of course, they will no doubt be going up next year

Total - about £1500 / 12 = £125 per month

(That's ignoring the £400)

ThisGirlNever · 23/12/2022 19:45

Gas
30/11/22 = 8601
23/12/22 = 8779
Total = 178 units = 1958 kWh = £196 = £8.15 per day

Estimate for December = £253

Government contribution = £67

Cost to us = £186

Electricity

Very stable monthly usage = £100 p/m

Grand total = £286

Monthly direct debit = £254 with £680 held on account by EDF, so I doubt we'll be stuck with any extra costs by the end of winter.

3 bed 1930's semi-detached
100m² floor plan

Solid walls with no insulation.
Double glazed - half new, half very old (but with new glazing units).
10cm loft insulation.

Gas central heating set to:
19°C overnight
20°C daytime
21°C evening

It's 3x what we were paying previously, but seems fairly reasonable compared to the 'media fear' and the crazy costs other people are posting.

NewBootsAndRanty · 23/12/2022 19:57

The cost of charging a phone is about 1p. If you're using LED bulbs, lighting isn't going to cost a fortune @NeedAHoliday2021

popcornfrenzy · 21/12/2022 20:46

I’ve added my breakdown - I’m on a fixed tariff for electricity but not gas. I know others have it worse than me 😟

Your gas price (14.18p kWh) is higher than the ofgem price cap (10p kWh).

Why have you signed up to a deal that's 40% more expensive?

The additional money is deducted underneath. They must have signed up before the price cap was announced. Similarly, I have 2p per kwh deducted from my electric rates.

Blondeshavemorefun · 23/12/2022 21:02

Ours was £354. I cried

that was nov To dec and on am fir a. Hour and pm for maybe 2

dreading dec to Jan as had week or 10 days of very cold -5/6/7 and heating on most of the day but low

so likely to be much higher

NeedAHoliday2021 · 23/12/2022 21:20

@NewBootsAndRanty i know but with a dh working from home and 3 dc each with phones, laptops, TVs etc I’d expect us to be a high usage home. I think it’ll bite us but I don’t understand why we’ve only gone up £25 a month when others are crying over their bills going up to crazy amounts.

As you say, it's all about the usage. Regular monitoring, updating readings if need be.

It will be interesting to see what your company thinks your usage will be.

NeedAHoliday2021 · 23/12/2022 21:51

Eon thinks our bill will go up £3 a year next year for electricity and gas will go down £0.01… why is my bill so different to the rest of the UK?

Bloody hell! Energy Bill £220!
Choccolatte · 23/12/2022 22:00

Ours isn't too bad (£148) but we have been very frugal - 2 hours a day to 18 degrees got very cold during the cold snap and let it go to 16 degrees. I used an electric blanket as working from home. Very little oven or gas use. But miserable tbh. But meant we could afford over stuff

NewBootsAndRanty · 23/12/2022 22:01

How much in credit are you?
Your estimated annual usage is over 3k a year - obviously you're going to have £66 a month taken off between now and March too...
