Hi all
I have been examining my bills - as we all know it's very very expensive!

I've never looked in this much detail before but I've been baffled by the numbers.. I feel our usage is very high considering we have the heating on very very low. There are benchmarks online but these are for annual usage so not that helpful as I am curious as usage over winter primarily!

We seem to be using on average 173kwh gas per month over December so far - on average heating about 6 -8 hours a day!
It's around £600 for December alone
Live in 3 bed detached old house - we are considering making the house more insulated etc
But in the meantime our usage seems very high ... especially considering our house is very cold as the thermostat is on very low... is anyone as geeky as me and has worked out how much kwh you are using or how much your bill is over last few months?
Any one have any thoughts on this or similar experience?
My electric us around £4-5 a day over December so in total its about £25 a day.. (and the house is still cold!)
Thanks so much
J

And the above comments confirm my suspicion that our energy usage is very high - I still can't quite work out why it's so high when we don't have the heating on 24/7 but will keep an eye on it.
We don't have fires installed yet and have some open chimneys we have stuffed stuff up them but again it's draughty!

For month 4th Nov to 4th Dec, four bed house, two people.

Gas (heating & hot water) 715kwH, or £83
Electric 174 KwH or £73

Less £67 Cost of living support = £90

December, being much colder, will be more. And teen DS is off school now so eating cupboards full of snacks per day.

I've just given a reading so it's up to date for the cold weather
Average is
Electric per day 5.33kwh
Gas per day 35.22kwh

2 bed apartment, work from home, EPC I think is B

4 bed old badly insulated 200sq ft semi. 13 rads. Only have bedrooms on for an hr in the eve.

Usage during this cold week 80kwh per day gas (1 hr in morning downstairs only. 4hrs evening plus 20 mins hot water)

4.6kwh electric per day

OP 5-8 hours of geating a day is huge!! That is where your cost is

That sounds really high considering your house isn’t warm. I’m using £8 on very cold days but most days are more like £5. That includes water and cooking on hob. Heating is on most of the time except at night at 18 degrees, sometimes 20.

Our boiler is brand new so guessing it’s quite efficient and house is quite well insulated 4 bed detached.

I did read that turning down some radiators can actually use more energy. It depends on your boiler though.

I've got a spacious 4 bed (very old!) house that's terrible to heat. So far in December our lowest daily gas use has been 78kwh and our highest 157kwh. That high was when I had someone with poor health, who needs to stay warm, visiting. I had the heating set to 20 pretty much the whole day.

We easily use over 100kwh per day and we're not doing anything outrageous. Just keeping ourselves thawed. So I can actually believe your figures.
