Energy gas electricity usage daily

Hi all
I have been examining my bills - as we all know it's very very expensive!

I've never looked in this much detail before but I've been baffled by the numbers.. I feel our usage is very high considering we have the heating on very very low. There are benchmarks online but these are for annual usage so not that helpful as I am curious as usage over winter primarily!

We seem to be using on average 173kwh gas per month over December so far - on average heating about 6 -8 hours a day!
It's around £600 for December alone
Live in 3 bed detached old house - we are considering making the house more insulated etc
But in the meantime our usage seems very high ... especially considering our house is very cold as the thermostat is on very low... is anyone as geeky as me and has worked out how much kwh you are using or how much your bill is over last few months?
Any one have any thoughts on this or similar experience?
My electric us around £4-5 a day over December so in total its about £25 a day.. (and the house is still cold!)
Thanks so much
J

Surely it depends on your house though, my 2 bed well insulated flat is easy to heat and although costs are still higher than last year I don't think it's completely outlandish cost considering a coffee and cake at Starbucks is close to £10.

My gas heating is on from 4-9pm and my total gas is only £2.50 a day and my electricity is around the same. So far this year I've only used 2000 Kwh of gas and the same for electricity.

Nolongera · 14/12/2022 17:55

OP 173kWh of gas for this very cold month seems insanely low, are you sure you meter units are in kWh and not m³?

RoseslnTheHospital · 14/12/2022 17:57

I'm not sure about your figures either. I've used 1466 kWh of gas for the last billed month, which cost me just over £200.

Hugasauras · 14/12/2022 17:58

That's incredibly low gas usage. Meters measure in m3 or ft3 - is that usage just from reading your meter or a bill?

NewBootsAndRanty · 14/12/2022 18:00

173kwh of gas costs under £8. You sure you're using that little in a month?

Hugasauras · 14/12/2022 18:00

To put it into perspective, average gas use according to Ofgem is 12,000 KWh a year. We are using about 60 a day in this cold weather.

janet0001 · 14/12/2022 18:00

Oh yeah sorry I'm getting myself confused.

For gas it is around:
400 meter 3
or 4,400 kWh
The 173 was daily kwh usage
That's between 16/11 to 12/12

Apologies - this is the first time today I've properly looked at all these numbers and it can be a bit confusing!! .
Thank you :)

I'm in a 1 bed flat and my average daily kwh use for gas is around 70-80 at the moment.

janet0001 · 14/12/2022 18:03

For context our house is 2000 sqft approx and old so not energy efficient ( we are looking to correct that but only moved in recently)

Gas use is heavily heavily weighted towards these winter months, so you will use far more now than you will the rest of the year. But £8-10 a day for heating at the moment isn't unusual. Gas prices have tripled.

Hugasauras · 14/12/2022 18:04

What's your heating setup?

NewBootsAndRanty · 14/12/2022 18:05

Yep. Your heating will account for about 89% of your annual gas use.

NewBootsAndRanty · 14/12/2022 18:05

Oops 80%, that should read.

Nolongera · 14/12/2022 18:06

OP, how low is your thermostat set at and how many hours a day do you have the heating on?

janet0001 · 14/12/2022 18:07

Heating is gas with Octopus, we have radiators in every room but I have turned some down to low in the rooms I don't use. About 10 radiators in total.

It is an indirect unvented hot water cylinder

It is is in an out house area which is very cold around 10 degrees - I am wondering if it needs to generate more energy because of that.

OP posts:
janet0001 · 14/12/2022 18:08

I've now turned the thermostat down to 12 degrees because the bill has been so astromonical!! It was set at 15 before!
My office is around 15 so it's not too bad.

RoseslnTheHospital · 14/12/2022 18:09

What is the gas being used for? Is it heating and hot water? How is the hot water heated, is it a combi boiler or do you have a hot water tank? What temp is your thermostat set to?

NewBootsAndRanty · 14/12/2022 18:09

Your house's EPC cert will tell you how much energy you're likely to need to use for heating over the year

www.gov.uk/find-energy-certificate

janet0001 · 14/12/2022 18:09

It's been on for about 5-7 hours a day. It's been less over the last week as I turned down the thermostat.

SlipperyLizard · 14/12/2022 18:11

Last December we used 2491kwh of gas, even back then we had our thermostat quite low and didn’t have the heating on all the time. 4 bed detached house, with reasonable insulation but an open plan living area with high ceilings & a wood burner.

So far this month we’ve used 1071kwh so are on track to use about the same amount I guess (although we’re away of Xmas so will save in that week!).

NewBootsAndRanty · 14/12/2022 18:01

I'm in a 1 bed flat and my average daily kwh use for gas is around 70-80 at the moment.

That's interesting

2 bed flat. Heating on at 15 c overnight, and then either higher during the day or at that during the day and warmer in the evening. Similar amounts - 50 - 70 kWh a day. It is cold outside.

Logoplanter · 14/12/2022 18:13

From memory we used 850kwh of gas from 22/10 until 21/11.

Whilst I don't have the figures for this month's bill as it's not due until 22/12 our usage has shot up in the last 10 days or so and we are spending around £15 a day and the house is still freezing for most of the day.

The house is approximately 2500 square feet and energy efficiency "D"

I'm really hoping temperatures will warm up slightly as £15 a day on top of the £4 a day electricity to still be cold just isn't sustainable for us 😬

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 14/12/2022 18:15

My highest gas day this week has been 66.31kwh and cost me about £7 odd. That's with having a large 4 bed and heating it to a minimum of 18 degrees.

I have the Hive system and their thermostatic valves so I can adjust the heating on a room by room basis which helps. But still, my gas and electric bill feels slightly terrifying this month, probably the £250 mark.

I'm surprised yours is high if you're only heating to 12 (and 12 is WAY under what you need to keep the house warm and avoid damp)

janet0001 · 14/12/2022 18:17

We moved in to the house at the beginning of the year. It does have a very poor rating and we haven't got round to properly insulating it yet so it is draught. It's a ‘project’ house - it hadn't been touched for about 30 years and we’ve been working on other things over the last year.. However we clearly need to prioritize this now!

Thank you for letting me know about the governments site with EPc rating and how to improve it! That's very helpful

NewBootsAndRanty · 14/12/2022 18:19

@cakeorwine tbf my heating is on 24/7 at 18 night/21 day (radiators in rooms turned down when I'm not in them).
