Mine is 9c anyone else's house this cold? I have my electric throw so not really feeling it until i need to do something and I'm straight back under it.
I know they say it's unhealthy but is it really when you're keeping yourself warm?

it was 17.5 this morning (we don't put the heating on overnight, never have) and it's been running all day at about 19.5, which is perfect.

Can I just ask a question to those who haven't put on their heating? Did you heat last year? If you did for how long? And if you did, and prices are now double, why don't you just use half as much this year, so you still get some heat in your rooms? I know other prices have gone up, so budgeting is crucial, but to have rooms at 10/15 is awful. Even student DD is keeping her flat at 18c, she has to, rental agreement.

I have saved a fair bit by only turning it on once it hit 13 degrees but once it's on, that's it, it's on now. I'm personally setting the temp lower at 15-18 and being more tolerant of how much it drops below 15. But it's frightening tbh.

Interestingly my pump broke on the heating system but the engineer told me that the longer the heating is off, the more sluge builds up. So you can't win it seems

Vintagevixen · 09/12/2022 22:59

Downstairs is 20.6 degrees and 46% humidity, top floor is 16.1 degrees and 49% humidity on my hygrometer.

Top floor is my attic bedroom in my lovely old uninsulated Victorian house, it's always a few degrees below the rest of the house in winter, but conversely always hotter in summer - can't win! But at least the humidity is good, so no damp or mould.

SleeplessWB · 09/12/2022 23:05

Some people's houses seem to be warmer with the heating off than mine is with it on! On all day today to reach the dizzy heights of 16 degrees. Not loving my old cold house today.

MrsSkylerWhite · 09/12/2022 23:07

Our thermostat is set to 9 in the wee small hours. Haven’t really felt it yet. Kicks up to 16 at 6.30, which feels warm enough.

FetlocksBlowingInTheWind · 09/12/2022 23:21

This year my boiler is struggling to make 16/17 during the day. Without it it's 14/15 degrees downstairs. My bedroom was 13 the other night.

gogohmm · 09/12/2022 23:25

18, because someone turned the thermostat up to 22 earlier, came in from work and they were both in t shirts Hmm

Retz1212 · 09/12/2022 23:30

House is on 21-22 but the house is not a warm house at all and it feels more like 19-20

NewBootsAndRanty · 09/12/2022 23:34

My front room is now just over 20; my hall is 17, bedroom 14 and kitchen "chilly".

Yup! We’ve been boggling today at the idea that people are turning their heating down to 18. That’s basically tropical in my house!

Umm… well done?

Apologies if you misunderstood me or if I wasn’t clear, I was not trying to be nasty or dismissive.

I mentioned the heating in my house the thought that your bill seems very high in comparison. I guess the open plan layout of your house makes it hard to heat effectively. I’ve tried to think of ways you could close off some of the open area into smaller spaces but am struggling. Is your children's bedroom a bit warmer like yours is? I hope so as at least then they could possibly snuggle up to watch tv or play together.

Pelo2022 · 10/12/2022 00:10

Been around 15c but I put the heating on to bring it up to 18c
I have this ridiculous layout - the kitchen/living is all open plan. The only radiator is under the window in the living room for that entire space
so the bathrooms are boiling but the living room is cold
i mean why not a second radiator?!

Ah ok, thank you! Their bedrooms are fine, it’s just the area with the conservatory which essentially has gaps between its panes that is just blowing my cash out into the air 😭.

24 last night at 9pm after 14 hours of heating.
18 at midnight.
12.5 at 7am today.

Cost just over £10 in heating but I had a friend over all day, so I had to put it on. Won't have it on again now til Monday night when I've got people over and then not again til the Friday.

Why not have it on more but only heat to 18? Is your friend elderly or do they have a health condition that means they need it that warm? My DGM's house is at 22 and she's in her late 80s.

hopeishere · 10/12/2022 07:49

Last night the top floor (3 storey house) was 15 so I put the heating on for two hours. My kids (teens) sleep up there but don't feel the cold!

Rest of house is about 20. We are being a bit more careful but I hate being cold and get cold very easily. I also hate when I'm ready to relax for the evening and the room is chilly.

We don't have any heating set to come on at particular times / temps we just put it on when we feel cold.

Would it be worth putting bubble wrap over your conservatory glass?
Our neighbours have cocooned their conservatory in plastic.

MyTreeIsFake · 10/12/2022 07:55

My modern well insulated double glazed house went down to 12 degrees overnight and that was with the heating on 19 degrees til 10pm.

The country is in an awful place this winter with so many not being able to afford to stay warm.

Maldedos · 10/12/2022 07:57

I live in an old barn in France and we don’t have mains gas so we rely on 2 log burners and electric heaters.
We’re very lucky as a m3 of wood is €65, I think it’s 3 x that in the uk.
My wood and electric bill combined will be about €190 a month but we are very liberal with our usage.
Our thick stone walls absorb the heat in the day so the rooms with the log burners stay warm all night as the walls act like storage heaters.

crazy4cats · 10/12/2022 08:26

If we have the heating off all night the house does get down to about 12 degrees by the morning, then takes a few hours to heat up, which when we're of out to work or whatever seems a waste of gas. We got a hive installed yesterday so now trialling having the house set to 14 during the day when we're not in and overnight, topping up to 17/18 in the morning / evening.

Will be intersting to see how gas costs compare, if it's just a little more to keep the house consistant it'll be worth it

doesn't help we have a conservatory off the living room which hemerages heat as it only has a polycarb roof (previous owners didn't put doors in so there's only curtains to try and keep the heat in!!). Having this replaced with a Guardian roof in January so this should make a massive difference to the rate of heat loss

Me too! I am always confused by the posts about controlling the heating by the thermostat... I have to physically turn it on and off each day or it would be running constantly most of the year trying to get to 18!

Yarrawonga · 10/12/2022 08:37

Or you could just set the thermostat to the temperature you prefer and let it do it’s job.

No, friend not elderly. Just don't want friends being cold. Doesn't feel very hospitable. The thermostat was only on 18 but its an old system and not very reliable.

Zanatdy · 10/12/2022 10:02

Lowest my living room has been this week is this morning, 13.6, because the radiators in the living room aren’t working properly (british has coming out next week). It’s now 20 3hrs later as got the log burner going for 3hrs now. Nice and toasty, but upstairs is under 18, and heatings been on 3.5hrs, going off for a bit now

OldSchoolCasualty · 10/12/2022 10:03

@OhPeggySue I think I might pass out if I hung out in a house all day set to 24 😂 MIL keeps hers 23 or above and it is stifling!

I think you can go too far though. I'm uncomfortable at my DGM's in 22 degree CH heat. 20 is my limit for being comfortable but wouldn't know how to ask if the heating was on for me or just the usual residents' preference!
