itsmeagainagain we'll look at getting her one. We've had an oil filled radiator in her room this afternoon it looks to run at about £0.44p an hour but cuts in and out, so possibly the way to go.

That sounds good, if it means you can keep the thermostat at a lower temp elsewhere in the house you should save money overall.
(LOL at the goose fat and brown paper - I’ve never tried getting in and out of a onesie, that hadn’t occurred to me!)

Coxspurplepippin · 07/12/2022 11:09

I think DM should be due a cold weather payment at some point, £300 or so (so that'll cover 10 days Grin.

She should get a bonus £300 on top of that.

Our usual winter payment is £200 but it’ll be £500 this year, your mum should get £600.
(The payments are much later this year, prob because the DWP are making extra payments to so many people)

Reluctantadult · 07/12/2022 21:50

Just been doing some number crunching here and my conclusion is not much I can do about anything! So the plus side is, I might as well put the gch on.

Gch day (going on and off all day with temp) added up to £8.54

Reduced gch day but using electric heater by my desk added up to £8.99

Being out all day and nothing on until home added up to £6.07 including commute costs but I sent get my hours done if I go to the office every day and feel bad for the dog!

So I might as well put the heating on if I need it and dry the washing!

Pelo2022 · 07/12/2022 21:52

@Coxspurplepippin this is the ugliest but warmest thing I own
Incredibly soft and it has cuffs so you aren't dipping your sleeves in your cup of tea etc
Long at the back too

Coxspurplepippin · 07/12/2022 22:36

Pelo, that looks great - one of the reasons I've avoided buying an Oodie or similar for her is the likelihood of spills and the garment being 'dipped' in tea etc.

GiantKitten, that's good to know. I made the assumption the winter fuel allowance wasn't dependant on DM owning her own place but was just paid because she is in receipt of pension.

Pelo2022 · 07/12/2022 22:40

I can say I'm actually thinking of buying a second one as I missed it so much when it was in the wash Blush

SendARavenToRiverRun · 07/12/2022 22:50

£10.52 today. 2 bed end terrace. It makes me feel sick to see it. Prepayment meters. The poorest pay a premium. Its shit and cold.

Kirytl · 07/12/2022 23:44

Ended up £16 combined today. Can see that being up to £20 plus at the weekend. It’s nuts paying up to £600 a month for just 2 bills. I just checked the temperature in Lanzarote where we holidays sometimes - 20 degrees at this time! Wish I had bought a place over there after the financial crash when it was cheap as chips

Yesterday mine was £3.20 in total. No washing (machine) or showering but we had gas cental heating on for about four hours. Lights and computers on.Had a bath in the evening. The gas heats water as it goes. It's higher when i use oven and tumble drier of course. Drier works out at £1 a load at the moment. We're still fixed rate. I got a shock when i had the tumble drier going while the oven was on, then switched the kettle on and someone was in the (electric) shower the other day. Today it already says £2.05 with an hour's heating, quick shower and a mixed load at 40c in the machine plus DH WFH with all the electronics that goes with that.
Going to use slow cooker and not oven today (oven is used once a week to batch cook usually)
Grateful for a solid 60 year old terraced house, gas CH and water, and DH and I being naturally quite warm people! (And the fixed rate, obviously. I think it's appalling that we all pay different rates for our fuel!)

whatthejuice · 08/12/2022 11:09

Combined gas and electricity...cheapest day is around £6, most expensive around £12 😱
Just got an early Nov - early Dec bill through. £256 and that's with the government help already taken into account.

GasPanic · 08/12/2022 11:10

Had to bump up the gas CH to 3 hours yesterday to keep the place from freezing.

That's £3.60.

NewBootsAndRanty · 08/12/2022 12:44

£7.77 gas, £1.68 electric yesterday.

NewBootsAndRanty · 08/12/2022 13:18

Looks like the DWP are issuing a £25 cold weather payment for my area, which willbe helpful

Kirytl · 08/12/2022 22:05

£14 today. I’m now at £50 for the last 4 days!

Meltinthemiddle · 08/12/2022 22:20

I feel like mine is going up all the time. £13 today and I've limited the central heating. I'm sat here with layers and a hat and candles. I honestly don't understand stand it.

NewBootsAndRanty · 09/12/2022 01:28

68kwh / £7.23 gas and 1.8kwh / £1.07 electric, inc standing charges, so £8.30 in all. Turned off my kitchen and bedroom radiators, and put the bedroom one back on at 11pm; didn't use my dehumidifier at all.

OnNaturesCourse · 09/12/2022 01:50

£6 or there about for both yesterday. About £1.50 of that was electric, the rest gas. It took 5 hours for my house to heat up to 18 from the morning (brrr) then it clicked on and off until 10pm. Around 7 hours actually heating.

Thankful we are a fixed rate but its still definitely a increase from last year I feel with this early cold snap.

I honestly do not know what we will do when our term ends as we are struggling to pay what we use already.

Terenced 1960s house, raised flooring with no insulation, basic loft insulation, original glazing in 90% of windows, front door that likes to wolf whistle when it's windy.

HomeEdRocks18 · 09/12/2022 13:22

No idea the exact amount today, but we pay £160 a month for gas and electric per month by direct debit.
Heating is on one hour in the morning and four hours each evening.

All my doors have curtains but thank you!

LemonDrizzles · 09/12/2022 15:10

Yesterday£10! Turns out a radiator was left on upstairs...

But baking a Christmas cake today for 3 hours .... I whisk by hand now to try to save energy

Kirytl · 09/12/2022 15:39

I’m up to £10 already today and it’s not even 4pm!

Iamclearlyamug · 09/12/2022 15:46

I shudder to think - I've had 2 halogen and one fan heater on most of the day today. My flat is baltic (grade 2 listed, high ceilings and only single glazed) I can normally cope pretty well with the cold, but even the dog was shivering this morning so I thought bugger it. Won't be saying that next month 🤣
