Mine is nearly £15 😱

How much has your gas and electric cost you today?

Just got a bill for November I don't have a smart meter but have given actual readings at start and end of month and daily cost is averaging £5.20. I'm just on the standard capped rate. 4 bed detached and I WFH but haven't needed heating on during the day except for half hour to prise family out of bed in the morning. I know this cost will go up over the next couple of months, but wasn't as scary a bill as I was expecting.

GrouchyKiwi · 07/12/2022 13:33

Gas yesterday was £11, forgot to check elec but it's usually around £5. We're home during the day, trying to keep it to just 15C, with a warmer blast morning and evening, but the heat disappears so quickly in this cold weather. It's about 3C outside today, with snow forecast overnight. We moved here 2 months ago; bad timing.

ifonly4 · 07/12/2022 15:35

Coxspurplepippin if it's taking that long to reach 20c, might be worth contacting the person who installed to see if the system needs balancing. Is the radiator a reasonable size in the room? Our system is odd, a smallest radiator in front room, a massive double width one in back room - massive one does us a favour though as on north elevation.

Haven't got a smart meter here, but just done my calculations based on our use since readings submitted end Nov. Gas £5.58, Electricity £2.21, so averaging. Suspect our gas is going to be high over next few days as forecast over coming week here is 1-3c in day, and -5--3 at night.

Coxspurplepippin · 07/12/2022 15:50

I think that's what we're going to have to do - I keep seeing posters saying it's only costing them £5 to maintain 20 degrees and I just don't get it........wails....... We've bled all the radiators, checked boiler pressure etc. The room DM is in is like a double room - half with a really small window and radiator about 120cm long (radiator, not room!), then half with a large window and french doors (all triple glazed though) and a similar sized radiator, but it's north facing. I'm currently investigating gilets and electric overblankets.

The smart meter is showing we've spent about £8 on gas so far today, because I put the heating on timer, not just 'on', so it's a lot less than yesterday, but the room is back down to 17 degrees after the heating went off again at 2pm.

NotToBeShaked · 07/12/2022 15:54

About £4.30 a day for both. No heating.

gogohmm · 07/12/2022 15:58

We are hovering around £8 combined at the moment. Put the heating on an extra hour today though

Coxspurplepippin · 06/12/2022 21:38

Nearly £30 Sad. We have an elderly family member living with us and try to keep their room at 20 degrees when they're up. I honestly don't know why it's so expensive. The thermostat is in their room, it's a modern house, pretty well insulated. I would love to have a heating expert come in to check the boiler/radiators etc.

We can't afford £30 per day on gas and electric - going to look into a heated throw, but worried about them navigating it as a trip hazard.

Can you plug in a heater during the day when the room becomes cold? Invest in thermals?

Athenen0ctua · 07/12/2022 12:44

Guessing those are imperial units for gas? We are using 3kwh electric and 1.5 metric units of gas. So about £1.02 plus £1.70 plus sc on the cap rates. Two people in a three bed semi. Yours looks about right to me.

Yes it's an older meter but I'm doing the calculation as per the formula on my bill. I did monthly readings and calculated it over 6 months, annoyingly EDF only does a bill every 6 months and doesn't update my account with usage as we go. When I got the last bill I was about £20 out in my favour so I was quite happy with that. We cook with gas as well so lets hope the figures keep going the same way.

@Athenen0ctua how come yours are so low?

Lovemusic33 · 07/12/2022 18:58

£5 electric and £6 gas. I really can’t afford it 😬 but I hate being cold. I have had the heating off during the day and have been wearing extra clothes and gloves.

Tisfortired · 07/12/2022 19:01

We put the emergency on yesterday about 9pm, £10. House is freezing. Set it to 21 to warm the whole house up then decided as an experiment when we went to bed around 11, to turn it down to 17 to keep the warmth at a middling level and not come down to it being ice cold in the morning.

Cost £7. Shan’t be doing that again! We’ve never had the heating on overnight before but it’s been so cold and frosty recently.

IncessantNameChanger · 07/12/2022 19:14

£3.70 as its a freezing your tits off day for us. I'm trying to keep it under £10 per day. So if the heating is on, the washing machine, the dishwasher and the tumble drier, we can't stay under £10 so the next day we go without which is shit.

My sons disability SW is coming on Friday so I have to change his bed which I have been stretching out as its getting everything dry now that costs the most. Washing towels and bedding weekly is now a luxury I can't afford. Thankfully he does get dla but that's going on tutoring. He is ten and im determined to get him to read and write. Cold or clean. Clean or illiterate. I'm lucky still because we will always eat. But it's getting cold now really

Treckles · 07/12/2022 19:15

It's horrifying how such a basic need is so different for everyone. We're still pre price hike fixed rate. Mid terrace 3 bed. 3 adults. Warm enough ( i mean it feels warm) with heating on couple hours twice a day to approx 18c. No heating overnight and DH and I have our bedroom window open. Super warm duvet, 16 tog. I get a bit hot and kick the covers off. We've had computer and tv on and done one wash load (before 7am, 30c, 40min wash) Just ran a bath (gas boiler heats water, bath half full) Smart meter says £3.40 for gas and electricity today.
It's 78p an hour to use the tumble dryer though, and I watched the numbers go up yesterday when the oven was on and DH was in the (electric) shower.
But I've been thinking an expensive day is £5! I guess we're in for a shock when our fixed rate is over.

I'm in a new build, I don't know if that means it holds the heat better? Trickle vents are open everywhere but the sitting room. Radiators on high in the sitting room, low elsewhere. Heating timed for 5:30 to 7:30pm at 16. Hot water is only on for half an hour in the early morning (hot water tank). Wrt electric, we have one fridge-freezer, no heat mats or lamps, though I do share the electric throw with the cats if I'm cold.

Kirytl · 07/12/2022 19:45

Freezing here today. My gas is currently £8 and electric £3. No one in from 9 til 1 either. Most expensive day this month so far Was Saturday at £16 combined. I reckon my December bill if it stays this cold will be around £450 😳

NewBootsAndRanty · 07/12/2022 20:04

Electric £0.68, gas £5.40 up to 18:30 this evening.
Heating on 18 through the night, up to 21 from noon onwards.

I've stuck the dehumidifier on in the kitchen with my washing for the evening to see how it works at drying, time and cost.

GiantKitten · 07/12/2022 20:20

I thought today’s gas would be higher (although the night is still young 🤣) because it took hours this morning just to get up to 18.
We have fire lit now though so current thermostat temp is well over target.
In previous days gas has been c £8, but I’m resigned to £10+ until this cold snap is over.

Over £20 a day.

CirreltheSquirrel · 07/12/2022 20:46

Smart meter says £5.44 which I think is the combined total. We have been out of the house for most of the day though so the heating was off between 7 and 4, will be interesting to see how WFH affects it tomorrow!

CirreltheSquirrel · 07/12/2022 20:51

Found the breakdown - £1.91 electricity, £3.52 gas.

Or it was until I microwaved my hottie hedgehog, a couple more pence used!

Coxspurplepippin · 07/12/2022 13:09

ifonly4 tbh, the temp in her room only hit 20 late yesterday afternoon after the heating had been on for about 8 hours Hmm.

She's currently sitting wrapped in a blanket - we're joking her 94 year old self looks like a little old granny...... She doesn't agree Grin.

We're going to try an oil filled radiator which should use 2kw ph and see if that's warm enough.

@Coxspurplepippin can really recommend a heated throw to put around your mum. Keeps me so warm I've barely had the heating on yet. Just make sure the wire is behind or to the side of her to avoid any trips but it's pretty much the same as having a blanket on

Might a fleecy onesie keep her much snugger? (And not looking like red riding hood’s granny! 🤣)
Would she wear one?

Coxspurplepippin · 07/12/2022 21:25

itsmeagainagain we'll look at getting her one. We've had an oil filled radiator in her room this afternoon it looks to run at about £0.44p an hour but cuts in and out, so possibly the way to go.

@Coxspurplepippin mine wasn't cheap but I got from Lakeland (for the returns policy) and its a decent make. it's been in almost constant use since we got it ..used every evening by my children and then us and by me when WFH. I think I read somewhere its about 5p per hour to run but it keeps us so toasty love it!

Coxspurplepippin · 07/12/2022 21:30

GiantKitten I think she'd love it, but her mobility and flexibility might mean once we'd got her in it we'd never get her out of it again (bit like people sewing themselves into goose fat and brown paper!). I think DBro has bought her an Oodie or similar for Christmas.

I expect being a new build helps, ours is built in the 70's but well insulated and relatively new double glazing.

We don't have the heating on in the morning, by the time you're out of a warm bed, into a hot shower and dressed there's no time to feel cold! We have the windows upstairs on the vent opening and we open several windows every morning to air the house, so a bit pointless to have the heating on in the morning then open the windows to let all the heat out!
