Dh told me we are 700 in credit with them.
I don't want the heating on more than an hour a day until winter hits.
What is everyone s situation at this point.

£1100 in credit, dual fuel.

RedWingBoots · 28/11/2022 06:38

Those who think they are massively in credit, do you know how much you’ve spent. You may well not be in credit at all.

I do meter readings a minimum of twice a month.

When my energy supplier made a mistake with one months billing at the beginning of the year, I calculated my own bill and gave them my figures. It matched their calculation.

This is why I cancelled my dd earlier this year and keep money aside in savings then pay the bill as it arrives. Better earning me interest than them!

I thought it cost 6% more for quarterly billing? I can't make that in interest!

Ciri · 28/11/2022 06:42

It hasn’t cost us anything to ask for a bill every month

I am over 500 in credit but they won't reduce monthly payments

You should telephone and ask for any excess money back in Spring or Autumn.

If they fob you off on the phone, send them an email with the word "Complaint" in the title asking for your money back.

Then follow up the "complaint" until they repay you. You may have to take them to the ombudsman, but complaining on review sites or social media after sending the email will likely get you your money back quicker.

I thought the unit rates were higher if you were not on dd?

Why is everyone leaving so much money in the energy company’s bank account? Take back your money!!!!

This!! Don’t get why you’d want credit with energy company - they are making so much interest. We have a separate saving account for energy bills - pay when we are billed: and make 2% interest in the meantime

iloveeverykindofcat · 28/11/2022 07:18

Only about 200. I refuse to give them more until I use it! Am a low user though.

Athenen0ctua · 28/11/2022 07:25

This says the unit rates are higher to pay after usage.

I've managed to drop my dd to £1 now as I'm with Octopus where you can change it yourself online. I can then make additional payments if needed when my £200 credit runs out. I don't want to cancel dd in case I then have to pay more.

I am on dd. But I still ask for a bill every month.

I have a bill every month too, confused now!

poshme · 28/11/2022 07:27

I'm about £50 in credit. (Electricity only)

I don't see why I should let the electricity company sit on my money. If I use more electricity over the winter I'll increase my DD. My use only goes up a small amount in the winter. I get billed monthly so I can see exactly what I use.

(We're not on mains gas, and have a tank full of heating fuel that hopefully will last till February.)

poshme · 28/11/2022 07:28

@Athenen0ctua it depends on your supplier. Octopus automatically bill every month.

Athenen0ctua · 28/11/2022 07:29

Oh, it was @Titsywoowho cancelled their dd. I was initially responding to them which is why I got confused. I meant cancelling dd will cost more.

Ciri · 28/11/2022 07:31

if people are billed every month there is even less of a reason to let the energy companies sit on your money. You know where you are with your energy bills so why are you effectively letting them take a massive security deposit?!

The phone call to get the £200 refunded will cost me more in my time and sanity than the interest I'd make on it. It will run out over winter anyway now I've set the dd to £1.

gettingolderbutcooler · 28/11/2022 07:36

£700 too!!!

Soozikinzii · 28/11/2022 07:39

I thought they had to let you have it back if it's over £200 in credit . I pay mine quite low and then send a lamp šum if it gets too low . That's with octopus with the app youcan afjust payments and pay a lamp šum it's very flexible .

Spoodee · 28/11/2022 07:40

£5 on electricity

£2 on gas.

happiertimes123 · 28/11/2022 07:41

£179 but we only moved in a couple of months ago. We had a refund of £200 on our old energy accounts - it's sitting in a savings pot in case we need it here!

happiertimes123 · 28/11/2022 07:42

That is just electricity though as we have oil heating. We topped that up in August. Should be enough for two years and it cost £1k

Wowzel · 28/11/2022 07:43

35 quid!

I'm with Octopus too, the system let me take it down to just over £200 but I think I'd have to phone them to get that back. I've adjusted my dd to £1 instead.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 28/11/2022 07:58

£900 and odd. I used to be on a pay as you go meter so I have overpaid for a while

LittleLlama · 28/11/2022 11:26

We are slightly over £1000 in credit and yet Shell still think we should increase our standing order…. We have a Smart meter and pay monthly. In October we used over 1000kWh less gas than we did last October and 100kWh less electric as fortunately October was not a particularly cold month. Novembers’s bill will be higher (reducing this credit) as we have had guests and had the heating on longer.
