What temp is your house right now?

And do you have the heating on?

I thought it was a bit chilly this morning/last night but moving around today it was ok (hoovering etc)
We are sitting on the couch tonight with blankets, and ds just commented it seems to be warmer to night than last night. Checked the thermostat and we are sitting at 15.5 degrees. But we are ok tbh.

How warm is your house tonight?

(No heating yet and I think we are doing ok feeling cold wise iyswim? None of the kids have complained yet! Although we have a box of blankets by the couch. Have put up an extra set of double lines curtains on the main "cold" windows, put in extra foam on windows that were a bit leaky and tend to go to bed earlyish)

19, lovely and cosy!! Heating has been on since around 6am it’s bloody freezing outside today!

Illumicrateme · 21/11/2022 13:32

We are doing surprisingly well, We are sitting at 20.5 in our living room currently with no heating. The house is a mid terrace and built 8 years ago so holds the heat well. My DH works from home in the living room on the computer which warms the room to if the door is kept shut.

forgotmyusername1 · 21/11/2022 13:50

cold
we have had a couple of £10 energy days so trying to keep heating off unless necessary and only once the kids are home.

we are £1000 in credit on the gas and elec but I can see us getting through that without too much difficulty

Anjo2011 · 21/11/2022 14:01

We have the hive app so periodically I like to check the temp. No one is home and it’s 13.1. Will put it on later for when we get home . Temp has dropped a lot in last few days.

Those of you with bedrooms below 16 & no partner in bed or not there at same time... do you have hot water bottles in bed?

My weakpoint is my feet. I can't sleep if My legs won't relax because my feet are icicles.

@lljkk i get very cold at night too. I have a warm duvet plus a quilt type thing on top and I sleep in socks and warm pyjamas (with an extra top under my pyjamas). I have a thermometer in my bedroom and I have worked out that 16 degrees is ok for me if I have all those layers but when my bedroom got to less than 16 it was just too cold for me.

I am surprised by all the people who say that their homes are 20 degrees with no heating. I am in a period property (terrace) but ha double glazed windows put in recently and some insulation. But it still started to get pretty cold in the last week or so.

I just ran my gas fire for half hour to see how much it costs, would have easily done without but I want an idea of prices ready for when it has to be used.

30mins on low got my living room from 16.5'c to 18.0'c, and the humidity dropped by 10%.

Running my gas fire for half hour on low apparently cost me 13p 😮

If that's right (and doesn't suddenly amend itself after today) I am very reassured!

Size of house plus number of humans is important. Each human puts out 100W of heat. Add a dog into the mix, plus a TV and lighting and for two people you are looking at 0.5 kW of heat before you even start heating the place. Also add in the sun. If you are facing a favourable sun orientation on the windows that can make a big difference.

Mine is a new build end terrace and there is no way it would be 20 degrees without heating at the moment.

Notcontent · 21/11/2022 18:35

@GasPanic number of humans probably does make some difference but most people (hopefully) have energy efficient lights and TVs - the reason why these are efficient is that they don’t produce any heat, only light. A bit of sun would be great but I have not seen any real sun for weeks…

Grumpybutfunny · 21/11/2022 19:01

Just got in from work and the house is 8 🥶 heating on as we are going back out soon so no time for a fire unfortunately

Yikes. Are you detached with poor insulation? Has it gone from a comfortable temp to 8C just while you've been at work?

Ghostsapply · 21/11/2022 22:50

Ours is currently 15.5 which isn't too bad. Had to put the heating on for a few hours this morning as it was 13.2. Also been on for a few hours this evening and we have had a fire in.
We live in a big Victorian end of terrace. We've insulated where we can and double glazing upstairs but can't afford anymore.

QS90 · 22/11/2022 00:15

@Illumicrateme Your house is obviously very well insulated! Can I ask how the humidity is? That is, is all the moisture trapped in aswell or is it not too bad?

Willmafrockfit · 22/11/2022 08:40

16
but i havent felt the need to have the heating on
just come back from walking ddog
and previously just come inside from throwing a ball for ddog
so i guess that warmed me up!

BeyondThinkOfTheOptics · 22/11/2022 08:43

15'c in my living room right now.
Just ran the gas fire for half hour to lift it from 13.3'c 🥶

Willmafrockfit · 22/11/2022 08:46

are you all buying themometers?
i only have the one connected to the thermostat in the hall

BeyondThinkOfTheOptics · 22/11/2022 08:50

I bought one - I don't have thermostatic control on my GCH (except for the one on the boiler, obvs)

I have a thermometer I used to use for my children’s rooms when they were babies.

Caspianberg · 22/11/2022 09:11

We have Tado smart thermostats everywhere so can see temperature and control each radiator individually

Its 0.5 degrees outside and snowing today here. But was very sunny yesterday. Indoors the rooms heated are all 20-21 degrees. Some rooms are set to 18 in the day like bedrooms when we aren’t using and it’s off overnight. But rooms only loose 2 degrees max overnight usually when off ie 21 down to 19

2 bedrooms the other side of the house aren’t in use so not heated, but face south and they remain 15-16.5 most days just from the sun.

Most modern TVs consume about 100W. Mine is 49" and uses about 80W.

So 1TV on all the time=about having 1 extra person in the living room.

Lighting, probably less so as I doubt whether most people have 20W worth of lighting in their living room these days.

Energy efficiency works well in the summer when you don't need the heat. But in the winter you need to replace the heat things like TVs and lights used to generate with another source if you want to maintain the room temperature. Still, doing it with the gas radiators is 3x cheaper than the electric telly "radiator".

Talia99 · 22/11/2022 10:16

I have recently bought a thermometer. It shows what I have always thought - that fitting the thermostat directly on the other side of a thin internal wall to the radiator hot water pipes gives incorrect readings when the heating is on.

Basically, 3 degrees difference.

Currently 18 degrees in the room I am working in but I still have cold feet despite thermal socks with slipper socks over. I am going to try a blanket - if that doesn’t work, the heated blanket is coming out.

Garysmum · 22/11/2022 10:36

As I have all the windows open to ventilate it's about 9 inside. I am seriously cold but the house needs to air. I will shut them in half an hour, heating comes on 5pm so will get back to 15/16.

We have various thermometers
DD's room - humidifier with a thermometer and humidity screen
DS's room - video monitor with thermometer
Dining room - thermostat
Lounge, our room and kitchen -thermometers with humidity reading

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 22/11/2022 18:23

Fire going which heats both Lounge and dining room which are currently 22.5 and 20.1

Kitchen is 20 degrees after cooking dinner but will get cold quickly

DD room is 15 but will pop there oil filled radiator on just before they go up for bedtime and it will take 20mins to get up to 18

DS room (loft) is 17

sagalooshoe · 22/11/2022 19:03

17.5

Had the heating on between 3-5pm for the first time today - it was 16 before.

Put it on for 2 reasons:1) dehumidfier leaked in my bedroom yesterday and soaked the carpet, room smelt very damp today 😩

  1. Son came home from school with a temp of 38.5 and couldn't stop shivering 😔That was the decider.

So it's been on and it feels toasty at 17.5 after hovering around 16 for 2 weeks!

Luckily I bought electric blanket for me and my boy back in august and they are absoutely amazing. I don't know why I didn't get them years ago when they were cheap. I think I thought they were just for older people - silly thought - everyone wants a warm bed! It would have vastly improved my love life if I'd known about warm beds 10/20 years ago! Nothing more of a turn off than an ice cold bed!

ShinyPikachu · 22/11/2022 20:19

Our thermostat is a freestanding one we can move around the house with a temperature display on it. We keep it away from the radiators in whatever room we're using it in to try and get the most accurate reading on it.
