I can't be this cold all winter!!

I've had to put the heating on because I'm so cold my legs and feet are painful. However I keep looking at the smart meter and know it's unaffordable to do this daily.

Heated throw and hot water bottles have not help. I have socks and slippers on, a jumper and cardigan....

Depends on the size of your radiators! Basically you ideally want to fill as much of the space/wall behind the radiator without it being visible from the room, so as a guide perhaps the size of your radiator minus about 3-4cm all the way around?

@coffeetofunction

Also, remember it is only really worth doing it for radiators on the outer wall, so you can reduce the material you need to buy.

Those on the inner walls the heat will just go into the stud walls and heat the whole house. It's the outer walls you don't want to heat.

Heat one room and stay in that room. Do your best to seal off any drafts/air leaks.

I had one draft/air leak in my living room and sealing that up made a big difference. There was a massive flow of cold air from the outside through it !

Does that still count if the interior walls are brick though?

And definitely think about putting long curtains across doors!

DH (a geek!) bought himself a Digital Laser Temperature Gun (search Amazon...) to find draughts and measure the temperature in different places. The front door/hallway was a problem. After fitting a heavy curtain across the door it proudly announced it was now 14c behind the curtain and 19c in the hallway!

Can everyone on this thread please stop pointing out to the OP the fact about not seeing breath at 16 degrees? Does it matter? This is just nit-picking.

OP have you applied to your council for a share of the 500 million fund that was set up after the pandemic? Gov.uk will send you to yours if you put in your postcode,

www.gov.uk/government/news/government-launches-500m-support-for-vulnerable-households-over-winter

My council helped a family member in very serious trouble with a new household item and £150, yours might be doing similar.
Good luck.

omg . I just looked at this at my county has the highest at 11 million

Hope you get some help @coffeetofunction

16 is cold and it’s scary when can’t put the heating on

ive cut down lots - would usually have on daytime for a few hours and evening but now 30m am. He maybe 1-2 if house is really cold then 6/7 so warm for dd

just waiting for oct/nov bill which is at new top high prices - really not sure what it will be 🥲

Wildmamma · 06/11/2022 18:20

Just a quick practical thing.

Have bought a really thick hooded onsie.
i wear it on top of my clothes all day in the house and it really really traps body heat in . In addition, wearing fingerless gloves and a cotton neck scarf also keeps the heat in .
Its not what we would choose , but it does work .

LemonSwan · 06/11/2022 18:25

Fuck it. My heatings on. I have a 6mo so I’m not fucking about with this. If we have to do something major when the energy bill comes in so be it. I will deal with it later. Yes it’s head in sand. But I can barely afford the cost of living anyway, so may as well be warm and in debt than cold and in debt.

We live in an old house with high ceilings. Next door is a shop and the other side has a car port style thing.

I don't think I've help by keeping the heating off so long. My son has mold on his ceiling and I worry that is because it's become cold.

I'm not generally a cold person, my colleagues often joke about me always being hot.

I'm in East Yorkshire and today there seems to have been a drop in temperature.

I'm sorry if I have come across complaining, I guess I just feel a bit fed up with it today and it's made me worry about getting through winter

I'm East Yorkshire and I've switched my heating on, is there anyway you can isolate the radiators? Only on in rooms you need? Can you make rooms smaller? Curtains across the room to create a smaller room? Will help heat that part of room your in and hold heat a little longer.
May sound counter productive but in the room with mould try and get some air in during the day. Open the window a little crack.

coffeetofunction · 01/12/2022 22:52

4 degrees today, reluctantly put the heating because a friend came round but it was still cold, I imagine because I've not been using the heating. Most days you can see your breath in my house. I've been sleeping in a hat but have a new little heater the kids are alternating each in hope it keeps the damp at bay. Currently debating per paid meters to only pay for what we use

OP posts:
NewBootsAndRanty · 01/12/2022 22:54

Just set up a variable direct debit (so you pay for that month's use). Prepay meters usually work out more expensive.

pompei8309 · 01/12/2022 23:03

Are you working/ claiming benefits? why you can’t afford to put the heating on couple of hours at least in the evening ?

NewBootsAndRanty · 01/12/2022 23:09

It's probably been said, but the first hour of central heating use usually costs a lot more than the second/third etc hour if its kept on.

Obviously this probably doesn't count the first time you're going from a pretty much permanently unheated house to a target of something that's suitable for human habitation.

AlwaysFullOfQuestions22 · 01/12/2022 23:20

So id been putting mine on an hour in the am as the temp indoors gets to around 13 ( hall is really cold)
It was taking that hour to get to even 15 degrees. And costing about £3.. Then in the evening an hour, plus normal other usage yesterday was £9 for an hour am and pm

Today i put to 18 and left it on that all day plus normal usage. Today is just over £9.

I think its because its not dropping loads in the night meaning it has less to work at.

Going to test tomorrow by leaving it on.

Lougle · 01/12/2022 23:22

It's 4 degrees C outside right now where we are. No heating (gas leak, boiler condemned, waiting for a new one). Hands are icy, breath is visible. Not terrible once under the covers, though.

The council did drop off some heaters but my goodness, they eat up the electricity! We've already used at least 30kWh today. The man on the phone said to keep meter readings and they may pay us for the excess energy costs.

I'm in South Yorkshire and this morning it was 5° when I went on my walk. One of my windows seals is fucked but I can't afford a replacement just yet and it's letting all the heat out. I've got some thermal leggings on under some non-thermal leggings, a vest, a t shirt and a jumper on and I've still been cold.

I've got a hot water bottle that I keep my hands warm with as need to type for work.

It has been cold up here and it's miserable.

It's weird how the weather has varied so much countrywide.

SeatonCarew · 02/12/2022 03:50

Try and keep one room warm as a minimum OP, rather than putting a very modest amount of heat through the whole house. Turn radiators right down or off in any rooms you're not using and shut the door.

If you are cold in bed, a good tip is to put a spare duvet or warm blanket underneath the bottom sheet. It stops that feeling of your body heat being sucked out to heat up the mattress and makes sure you are warm on both sides.

I've never been so grateful to be post menopausal. I'm always hot and that's working in my favour. My always cold husband is not so happy.

Charge him 10p a cuddle! 🤣🤣🤣

splatfrog · 02/12/2022 04:15

Where did you get your gloves from @MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel ?

onlythreenow · 02/12/2022 05:43

I could only see my breath indoors in an unheated house in the single digits.

I'm not in the UK but it can get pretty cold here overnight in winter, and I've never seen my breath indoors in an unheated house. My flat is unheated overnight and I have single glazing, and no heating on while eating breakfast. How on earth can a house be so cold?

HalfasleepChrisintheMorning · 02/12/2022 05:49

Calor gas cabinet heater is what DH is using when WFH. You only need it on for half an hour and the room is toasty. He does that a couple of times a day. It’s a small bedroom though (single, used as a study).

MarshaBradyo · 02/12/2022 05:55

coffeetofunction · 02/11/2022 19:43

It wasn't 16 degrees when I caved and put the heating on... I feel so guilty the kids were complaining about being cold knowing we could see our breath.

I know I'm not the only one in this situation.

I've been doing my uni lectures from home today and I was sat in a coat and hat.

It's depressing knowing I work and I'm trying to better my life and can't keep family warm

Op what financial help are you getting? Are you a student and work etc

There are direct payments if you qualify

I don't think it's that unusual, is it? When I was in my kitchen last night (no heating, double glazed) I could see my breath. No idea what the temperature was, but very cold.

Off Amazon, they were £7 in the black friday sale.

It doesn't seem to be ususual in the UK, but I genuinely don't understand it.

LindorDoubleChoc · 02/12/2022 18:33

Apparently 7 deg outside in London. I just walked round to the shops and couldn't see my breath. I don't understand it either.

Decafflatteplease · 02/12/2022 21:34

12 degrees in our kitchen at the moment 😱❄️❄️❄️

15 in the lounge where I am nowhere in our house seems to get above 15-16 at the moment even with the heating on

Currently on the couch with thermal socks, boot type slippers, a fake oodie with the hood up a duvet and a hot water bottle.

Heating is on an hour in the morning then 1-2 hours in the evening.
