I can't be this cold all winter!!

I've had to put the heating on because I'm so cold my legs and feet are painful. However I keep looking at the smart meter and know it's unaffordable to do this daily.

Heated throw and hot water bottles have not help. I have socks and slippers on, a jumper and cardigan....

I know this is probably the shittest tip ever, but I’ve taped that polythene foam packing stuff to the single glazed velux roof windows and it honestly made a palpable difference (2 of the dc have the attic room). When Amazon delivers more I plan to do the single glazed landing side window and the failing double glazed back bedroom window.
When I get to the point of turning radiators on I’m going to put tinfoil behind the ones on exterior walls too.
I’m reluctant to spend on window film etc unless I can guarantee savings outweigh costs 😂

Apileofballyhoo · 02/11/2022 21:51

Our tank is set to go to 60° once a week for disinfection, I dont think it needs to be 60° everyday.

Sorry you're so cold OP.

I find this hard to believe, it is still quite warm out there.

Really depends where you are. It’s 8 here but with the wind chill (and it’s blowing a gale) feels like 4.

Perfectlystill · 02/11/2022 21:58

I'm surprised to read this as it's really very mild at the moment. Wet, but not cold.

We don't have our heating on and not even the children are complaining yet.

NukaColaQuantum · 02/11/2022 21:59

You have my sympathy OP, the first time I was there in winter I asked my brother “Why do you insist on living where the air makes your face hurt?!”. Coastal winds are no fun from about Sept onwards.

You do know the weather / temp isn't the same across the whole country?

Bloody cold here today (NW coast). We've got high winds (45+ mph) and had torrential rain.

Apparently the majority of posters on MN are not aware of this.

I can really sympathise with the painful feet. not sure whether I have poor circulation or something but the minute the weather turns colder my feet are so painful and almost feel numb. Then fine again in the summer.

It’s been blowing a gale in Manchester today and awful downpours. Our house has been fine recently at 17/18 but it had dropped to 15 this morning after lower than recent temps overnight. So the heating has been on today for a short burst just to stop that cold damp feeling. I hate paying the energy companies these prices but we can afford it. Not all houses retain heat well even with all the mentioned adaptations.

I’m also in the Manchester region and my heating, which is set at 18 degrees, came on this morning for several hours before it reached temperature. This afternoon my nose was cold even though it was 18.5 in the house so I boosted the heating to 20 degrees for the evening. I was already wearing a t shirt and sweat shirt, thick joggers, socks and furry slippers. For me, that is my limit, I don’t want to spend the winter huddled in bed or huddled under blankets and let my house get damp ( I’ve had problems with mould before when my boiler was not working properly).

I was not aware that being on blood thinners might make me feel colder than previously, I started taking them after a TIA earlier this year so I’m grateful that I can afford to pay increased energy bills as long as I don’t go mad!

Was a guy on the radio at the weekend going on about how the cold air is bad for you even if you are wrapped up in blankets etc
Veryworrying

Well there a world of difference between the south of England and the north of Scotland. It is as we would say in Glasgow ,Baltic out there. My hearings in, currently £600 in credit so we’ll see how long that lasts.

giggly · 02/11/2022 22:21

My heatings on ,

lizorlettuce · 02/11/2022 22:24

We haven't got ours on but have an electric stove heater on very low in the living room in the evening. It makes a massive difference but much less expensive than heating the whole house.

knittingaddict · 02/11/2022 22:31

I've never been so grateful to be post menopausal. I'm always hot and that's working in my favour. My always cold husband is not so happy.

Jux · 02/11/2022 22:35

I used to go out for a walk every couple of hours when I had no money, no heating and there was snow that winter. The house felt so warm when I got in! Not for long, tbh, hence why walking every two hours or so.

RosesAndHellebores · 02/11/2022 22:49

Is it possible to keep one room warm, and the children's bedroom?

In my experience which is limited I think if you start the day cold, you stay cold. Perhaps an hour in the mornings?

MintJulia · 02/11/2022 22:52

OP, I wfh and leave the heating off. I sit in a sleeping bag if I'm sitting still at the keyboard, but generally my clothing is enough. It was 10 degrees here today and I was fine. I wear:

jeans, wool ski socks, thermal base layer, shirt, heavy wool sweater like a Guernsey etc. I find heavy wool is much warmer than synthetics, wear a thin base layer underneath if you can't wear wool against your skin.

I have wool throws on the sofas for relaxing together.

watingroom2 · 02/11/2022 22:54

A heated throw will not keep you as warm as you would think.. UNLESS... you put blankets (duvet) over it

It traps the heat and really does warm you up

We live in an old house with high ceilings. Next door is a shop and the other side has a car port style thing.

I don't think I've help by keeping the heating off so long. My son has mold on his ceiling and I worry that is because it's become cold.

I'm not generally a cold person, my colleagues often joke about me always being hot.

I'm in East Yorkshire and today there seems to have been a drop in temperature.

I'm sorry if I have come across complaining, I guess I just feel a bit fed up with it today and it's made me worry about getting through winter

I live in East Yorkshire too. It was 15c in our house this afternoon. Definitely colder than it has been recently. Your house is probably feeling colder for keeping the heating off I have noticed a small blast in the morning and evening has made the house slightly more pleasant. Tried to make it till November but I have very young children.

FortSalem86 · 02/11/2022 23:03

MidnightMeltdown · 02/11/2022 20:34

Really?!

I'm in the north of England and my house 17.9 degrees this morning.

It doesn't even feel cold outside at the moment

15c in my house and it isn't a pleasant wind up. Some people feel the cold more you know?

FortSalem86 · 02/11/2022 23:03

CarPoor · 02/11/2022 23:16

Please be careful with electric throws and beds, it is a fire risk and sadly our neighbours died this way! If you can avoid having them on while you are sleeping in yhe bed please do

CatWithARabbit · 02/11/2022 23:17

I have found wearing thin leggings/knee length nightie and bed socks and dressing gown keep me really warm in evening. I have a throw for over my legs. In South East, heating on tonight (2 hours) for first time to air clothes. Bed socks are amazing for me they seem to heat all of me !

PeloFondo · 02/11/2022 23:20

B&M sell heat saver socks and usually have thermal tops and fleece leggings in cheap as well if you have one nearby
