I can't be this cold all winter!!

I've had to put the heating on because I'm so cold my legs and feet are painful. However I keep looking at the smart meter and know it's unaffordable to do this daily.

Heated throw and hot water bottles have not help. I have socks and slippers on, a jumper and cardigan....

Sorry you are going through this OP. It's no fun.

Not read all the comments but I would get a check up first, just incase there’s an underlining reason you feel so cold.

I feel the cold, I work from home all day and we don’t have the heating on yet. I do have an electric throw from last winter but I’m not using it yet as I’ve found this is easy to wear in the house over my normal clothes and it keeps me surprisingly warm:

I have fingerless gloves for wfh in winter also wear these M&S slippers with woolly socks and they do a great job, had them over a year and they are still in great nick

Putting reflective insulation behind radiators really helps! DH did it in all our rooms and there was a noticeable difference in how quickly the room heated up:

Dh was cold this morning. When he woke up it was 7 degrees. Yesterday it was 14.

Really?!

I'm in the north of England and my house 17.9 degrees this morning.

It doesn't even feel cold outside at the moment

Beachsidesunset · 02/11/2022 20:35

If your older teens are working are they contributing to the cost of running the house?

You need to get some of this www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/dettol-mould---mildew-remover-750ml to sort the mould and ventilate your house.
The mould, cold and seeing your breath all indicate your house it very damp. Windows wide open for at least half an hour (in the morning) and star jumps for kids if cold. A dehumidifier running for a couple of hours in the evening might help.

Thank you for sharing this. I will budget it in to the next shop. I plan to declutter his room and he has started to open his windows in the morning but his circulation isn't great so he needs to keep warm.

It was so cold in my house today I went out on a walk in a storm to keep warm! I agree with you, I literally don’t know what I’m going to do when it gets colder, we live in the north and can easily get to -5.

During the day, WFH, I'm wearing M&S thermal leggings underneath joggers. Thin wool layers on top. Thick walking socks and then heat holder socks over them. Fingerless gloves when typing when it's been cold.

Oodies are for evenings - sometimes too warm ...

I popped to the local charity shops on the way to school this afternoon and managed to pick up two jumpers for DD for £2.50 and a long woollen cardigan for me for £2 which feels like a bonus. I got some leggings off a friend which I can layer up too.

Can you explain what the heat holder socks are as I think these might be a good send

Where about in UK are you Op? Central Scotland here, very old draughty flat but still not cold enough for heating...which is weird. Only had it on in one or two short bursts purely to dry washing so far.

I'm central Scotland too in a well insulated new build. I'm someone who does feel the cold so I personally think it is cold enough now. We wfh and don't want to sit in a house which is 14c when sitting at a desk all day.......

Can you suggest how much each radiator needed?

Im in the south east and today is the first time ive felt cold. We have thermometers in each room and the kids room dropped down to 14 degrees, lounge and dining room were 16 degrees. Fortunately we have an open fire so were able to warm downstairs up and its now a toasty 21 degrees and we put the oil filled radiator on in the girls room for an hour before bed and its now 19 degrees.

I dont have the answer OP but its no fun being cold

No health conditions that have previously effected me being cold but after reading this thread I do wonder if a set of blood tests might be a good option

OP posts:
Paddingtonthebear · 02/11/2022 20:45

Underlying I meant, not underlining!

I found out I was slightly anaemia and had low blood sugar which contributed to me feeling cold. Especially noticeable if I’m hungry.

I've always layered because I feel the cold, but this year, I've got wool layers working on the idea that more thin layers are less bulky and warmer. The socks are these from Amazon. I got one pair on a lightning deal, but I've bought another at full price because they make such a difference. Our rear porch is tiles which make it cold down that end of the house, and I can feel the cold through thick socks, but not these, Like wearing slippers. I wear them a few days before chucking in the wash, so need the second pair because I don't like walking around the house without them now.

They're they sort of thing you can probably pick up cheaper from a market stall, but I've paid for them thinking they'll last more than this winter.

Withnoshoes · 02/11/2022 20:52

safetyfreak · 02/11/2022 19:42

I find this hard to believe, it is still quite warm out there.

It’s been blowing a gale in Manchester today and awful downpours. Our house has been fine recently at 17/18 but it had dropped to 15 this morning after lower than recent temps overnight. So the heating has been on today for a short burst just to stop that cold damp feeling. I hate paying the energy companies these prices but we can afford it. Not all houses retain heat well even with all the mentioned adaptations.

FindingMeno · 02/11/2022 20:53

I have had hypothermia in the past.
Imo the worst thing you can do is to sit still if you have any choice in it. Once you get really cold it's hard to get warm again without an external heat source, so be vigilant about doing something if you start feeling cold.

It wasn't 16 degrees when I caved and put the heating on... I feel so guilty the kids were complaining about being cold knowing we could see our breath.

I know I'm not the only one in this situation.

I've been doing my uni lectures from home today and I was sat in a coat and hat.

It's depressing knowing I work and I'm trying to better my life and can't keep family warm

Can’t you go and work from a library or somewhere warmer?

I'm in the North West, not far from Blackpool and today is the first day I've felt cold. There is a chill in the air definitely. The rain was torrential today too and its extremely windy outside.
I'm currently layered up under the duvet with a hot water bottle.

I have found some on vinted cheaper and I had some money in my account from selling so I have a pair on there way. Thank you

That where I am.....today it is very cold

I had planned to do so but my lift got cancelled.

Tomorrow I am going to be out and I plan to spend Friday in the library- even if I have to walk all the way there and back. Least I'll be warm

I'm wfh at the moment and cant put the heating on either. My house is 80s so it brilliant but we got new windows around 5 years ago. I wear layers, even tights under Jean's, t shirt with jumper with a knock off oodie on top. I did get sheepskin booties slippers a few years ago still going strong and wear thick warm socks from primark.
I also have these cashmere fingers gloves from turtle dove. They are seconds and cost a tenner. They go right up to my wrists. When it's really cold I wrap a blanket around me.
It's worth noting that when in tired I'm even more cold. I also drink warm drinks too.
It's totally shit atm isnt it. What I save with heating goes in electric running my computer.

I have blinds and heavy curtains downstairs, blinds and curtains upstairs. I've made draft excluders and used insulation tape.

I feel cold to touch.

My teens are in bed under quilts/weighted blankets/throws and they're still cold. Before I put the heating on you could see your breath.

I plan to get electric blankets for the children's beds.

I just don't know how I (or others) will manage through winter

I've heard sleeping in a tent on top of the bed works wonders. Traps the heat in. Don't know how practical it would be though and it's obviously only of use at night.

Sewingismyfavouritething · 02/11/2022 21:39

im going to bed in my ski wear, base layers, socks and leggings, DH always complaining I’ve hoarded the stuff from mega years ago, I only skied once but I’ve worn it most snowy cold UK winters, not quite the way I have tonight.
