Tell me your tips. I've decided this winter I want to save as much as I can.

Any advice on how to keep going? I've already decided to limit social media so I dont get jealous if I see people doing things im not. There are things I've planned so my winter isn't without its fun. I just want to prioritise saving a much as I can this winter.

Anyone else doing the same and want to encourage each other?

Chicken thighs and drumsticks over chicken breast all day every day.Much cheaper, tastier and meat on the bone cooks so much better.

Always!

kateandme · 20/11/2022 18:56

Really good value are those stew pavkets from lidl and aldi.has the chicken thighs and drumsticks.carrots.leeks,onions herbs stock rtf.full meal all in the pack to stick in the oven for 45 mins.and they are really good. and under £4.i think a pack of leeks is almost pounds on it's own now😫!

Lilyofthewally · 20/11/2022 20:51

The stew packs are brilliant value from lidl. The £1.50 veg boxes are great too, plus you can get some really good bargains,75% off I think,if you hit the stores at the time they put the reductions out.

I have been really trying to live frugally, and have been doing well, but now I am more thinking towards increasing my incomings where I can.A lot of people where I work also do driving for uber/deliveroo etc and I am going to apply next week.

Dragnet14 · 20/11/2022 21:01

If it takes a while to be accepted, then I will aim to get a cleaning job in the morning/after work as I can try and cut costs so far but i think, for me that I need to think about increasing the money I have going into my bank.

Milkyworm · 20/11/2022 21:08

I am looking into doing either a cleaning job before/after work or both plus I have recently started posting flyers for our local Chinese restaurant every Monday for 2hours and I get £20 for doing so.I am really really trying to increase my cashflow

Milkyworm · 20/11/2022 21:10

I agree that trying to save money gets you so far,but for me,increasing my earnings may help more as I will be earning more, but also my time will be occupied.

Blancettyblanc · 20/11/2022 21:21

Yes,I agree.I think the key to not struggling awfully in the coming months,is to increase ways of money coming in,more than trying to stop spending as everything is just going ski high.

Legakimboz · 20/11/2022 21:31

I am trying to do the same when I think about it,even though I work around school hours, there are lots of ways that I could try and earn extra.I am thinking online surveys, mystery shopper, extra cleaning job.Maybe I just need to focus more as to be honest I won't have much choice but to earn more come the new year as the bills are piling up😖

Legakimboz · 20/11/2022 21:32

It's just so worrying seeing all the price increases across the board and feeling so helpless to a certain extent.

DuchessOfDisco · 21/11/2022 13:30

I’m definitely in the earn more money camp. I love spending too much to cut back, so my focus is earning more. I’ve been doing Amazon flex in the evenings for the last 2 months which can pay quite nicely, and I’m also planning on doing the mumsnet unspeakable and joining an mlm for a company that I spend a fair amount with anyway (I’ve been researching it a lot and I’m already spending my minimum earnings as a customer, so I won’t be any more out of pocket - in fact I’ll be quids in as I’ll get earnings from my own shopping. But I also know mlm is the devil on here).

Is Amazon flex like uber or deliveroo,or does it deliver fresh groceries? I have heard Amazon can be very good employers.

I don’t know much about Uber eats/deliveroo but I’m told they are similar.
basically you just deliver Amazon parcels so anything and everything really. You are classed as self employed so you receive everything you earn but are responsible for your own tax, fuel, car maintenance etc - but don’t forget the first £1000 of self employed income doesn’t have to be declared and then you can take the fuel and vehicle maintenance as expenses so tax is minimal really. Pay starts from £13.50 but easily goes up to £23 and over if you don’t mind taking the unpopular shifts (evenings, weekends and during England matches apparently). You log into the app, select a shift you want (usually in blocks of 3hrs), go to the depo, pick up the parcels and then deliver them. I’ve had some right horrible ones (large mileage, middle of no where or worse - the poxy highstreet with no cars allowed), but then there’s always some lush blocks where your finished in under an hour on a nice 80s housing estate (think wide roads, well signposted, driveways etc). But last week I had a 4.5hr block for £79 and completed it in under 2hrs.
but they do seem to prioritise workers wellbeing - you aren’t allowed to work more than 24hrs a week and it won’t let you book shifts for more than 6 consecutive days.

Thanks so much, that's really helpful advice.

Anniebanany · 21/11/2022 20:04

I agree with trying to make more money v trying to save.Speaking personally,I pretty much have cut things to a level where I am comfortable and I don't lead an extravagant life at all.I am now open and willing to consider lots of ways to increase my earnings.

@DuchessOfDisco thanks for details, will look into for sure.

@ItStartedWithaKiss72

Could you start using accounts with a notice period? So for your bills a 30 day notice period?

I have a building society account rom a small building society where my dad lives, to get money out I had, until recently, to send the passbook and a letter and they would send me a cheque.

I can now phone them, but only M-F 9.00 - 5.00. They technically have internet banking but I can never get it to work for me.

I have a code for a free Simply Cook box if anyone is interested. You get 4 recipes for free and there's no obligation to order any more.
www.simplycook.com/invite/N6FYNV?t=cp&pg=ref&via=dt

We both get a free box if you use my code, and the recipes are great. We have been using them to replace expensive takeaways and been very impressed. The food is delicious and we've saved a big chunk from not ordering takeaway food on a fri or sat night.

Used your code@Anniebanany ,cheers👌

I have been popping into asda every couple of days at 6.30pm as that's when they bring out all the final reductions, and it has really saved me lots of money. The prices are pretty much reduced to 90% of the shelf price and I have been getting lots of meat, fish, pies, meals that can be frozen.Bread and cakes which last for a good few days plus pizzas, juices etc. There are a fair few people that go everyday as the price drops are so good, but if you have a car/live within walking distance, this can be well worth doing. They also reduce all the fruit and salad which i have found to last well, also.

Squeezylemonsqueezy · 22/11/2022 15:59

I'm not sure if they have already been mentioned, but the Olio app and Too good to go app are great for picking up surplus food for free (Olio),and getting takeaway food for a fraction of the price (TGTG).The carvery near us does a massive bag of carvery food for less than £4 and you always get lots of gammon, beef and turkey.

Anniebanany · 22/11/2022 17:08

Great,thanks,@Gazumperrotunda ,hope you enjoy x

Putting effort into trying to make more money (new job / extra job), makes a lot more sense to me than doing things like filling up hot water from work to save 1p boiling the kettle
