I’m off work for a long weeks for some r&r which is well needed.
yop up from Sainsbury’s this morning but don’t need a full shop
next week

lifelongfrugaleer · 27/10/2022 07:47

I think the vans offer has finished but by god the website is slooowwww.

needastrongoneagain · 27/10/2022 08:00

Hooray for the time off life. Much needed.

Scotland is literally my favourite place in the world north, if it wasn't for family and friends, I'd live there tomorrow. It feels so clean, we always come home rested and energised.

£26 on some Christmas stuff.

Need to do a menu plan, I've veered off track with being organised and yesterdays tea was veggie sausages and home made wedges in the air fryer.

Did get a nice club run in though!

CurlsandCurves · 27/10/2022 08:58

Morning,

Enjoy your week off @life

Feeling a lot better today. DH and DS1 came back from working away early so that’s 2 extra bodies working on the house. It’s certainly giving DS1 lots of experience, he’s doing amazing putting all his plumbing skills into practice and learning lots of new stuff too.

I'm at work today which I’m looking forward to. I’ve missed my work buddies, specially after the week I’ve had.

Happierwithouthim · 27/10/2022 10:56

I got a hellofresh delivery yesterday, it's new to Ireland so got 25% off. €21.99 for 6 meals was very reasonable Smile
I did a grocery shop on Sunday evening, not even a massive restock but last time I went in and got a trolley was end of August, time before that was end of June, other than that it has been topup shops. I think I need to get into habit of going once a month really. I'm doing fine budget wise as I am for groceries/cleaning products/petfood but it makes me feel very disorganised so I'm going to get that sorted.

Been pricing home heating oil this morning, there's very little difference between the two local companies, a further away company will be 2c a litre cheaper but one of the local companies have a savings plan with €50 incentive with terms & conditions. I'm going to check out what the terms and conditions are. Child Benefit payment is doubled for next month to help with cost of living crisis and we will be getting €200 towards our electricity bill also, I'm going to put these into my oil tank.

I reread a post I posted in June where I was planning on working out my sinking funds, still haven't done that.

I've been just carrying on and not had a real plan. I save a few sinking funds in Revolut towards social occasions and a family holiday, I'm able to leave them alone when they're in my Revolut account but I overspend in YNAB Hmm
Nothing saved towards Christmas, DS Birthday(9th Nov) Hmm what am I at?

Happierwithouthim · 27/10/2022 10:58

Curls my sympathies on your loss, glad your work family will help lift your spirits.

Need I always say the same about Scotland, if I could have my life here, over there I'd move in an instant.

Happierwithouthim · 27/10/2022 11:00

I don't seem to make provisions for childcare until the week it's due, same with fuel card bill. I'm going to focus on those two and Christmas for next two months once I get rota from exh and I know what evening childcare I need for those two months!

Socathe · 27/10/2022 12:23

Back to my normal working hours after my three week full time course yippee. DS and I are both very happy to be having a chilled out day at home today. Had his swimming lesson this morning, picked up the weekly food shop (Aldi click and collect) £55 so very under budget this week! Included some Halloween chocolate etc so not sure how, no doubt I've forgotten something. Will need top up shops throughout the week too. Other than that will be a NSD today as we're just having a film afternoon. Tidied our big food cupboard which was well overdue and we might bake a cake later. DS wants a berry cake so I'm thinking a Victoria sponge with jam and some raspberries on top.

TheNewlmprovedMrsMadEvans · 27/10/2022 18:18

Enjoy your time off Life Flowers
NSD for me again today Smile
Had my Flu jab this morning , no ill effects thankfully Smile
Well done on the 55 lees Socathe
Anyone looking for Halloween trick or treat sweets , Morrisons are doing 11 mini bags of Haribo for 1.25 and mini bags of Cadburys choc for 1.50 Smile

TheNewlmprovedMrsMadEvans · 27/10/2022 18:25

Glad you are feeling a little more peaceful Curls bless you sweetheart [Flowers]
Happier Bob has oil central heating , we ring around the different companies to find the cheapest and we also ask if they can do his delivery at the same time as someone else's local to cut costs. I don't know if that is possible where you live Flowers

Laska2Meryls · 27/10/2022 19:34

Day out at our local English Heritage place with DD and Dgcs.. ( we all have membership so it just cost 4 ice creams 3 coffees and a kids lunch split) Fantastic walking through the woods and slong the seashore.. doing the family identifying trees trail..
I did splash out on two red squirrel toys for dgcs though ( as we are one of the few places that only have reds as native population) . But got 10%with my EH discount but still 32...They were thrilled with them though.

Back home for a simple sausage and baked potato supper which went down very well.

Quiet evening with a glass of wine is in order, I think and early night!

Laska2Meryls · 27/10/2022 19:36

Luckily still so warm here , we were in Tees and jeans... I definitely would have swam today if I could have made time ... hopefully tomorrow.

lifelongfrugaleer · 28/10/2022 07:46

Sounds lovely laska
hope your day in the office helped curls
I had a speedy but happy days
£60 Sainsbury’s and same in Aldi, had a long walk with the puppy and did some baking which needs decorating today
walking to meet a friend at her house today as she hasn’t been well,

as you say much needed time off

BigSkies2022 · 28/10/2022 11:31

What a lovely day, laska - and the option of swimming too! Still very mild here - 20 degrees yesterday. So, no heating, as yet (but the lights go on early - this can be a gloomy house, and we both hate stumbling around in the dark).

Trousers that I ordered with my birthday money finally arrived. Lovely trews, but alas, too small. I did measure carefully, and go up a size, but the sizing is really whack. Have compared them with trousers that do fit me well, and am ordering a replacement. I am determined to spend my birthday money on something I want (new trousers) rather than something we need (new towels)!

Happierwithouthim - I feel you on the 'where am I at' with budgeting. I mean, I do forward plan, and compared to how I was with money even 10 years ago, never mind much earlier in life, I am a very organised and fairly skilled manager of my resources. But the fact remains that I am trying to do a lot with a limited amount, my fixed costs are pretty high, and a setback takes a good while to recover. So, last autumn, I needed to find £5k unexpectedly and it's taken me the whole year to get back to square one, and be able to start to build again. It can be a bit dismaying, especially when the things that run out a budget that month - a haircut every 3 months, a pair of trousers to replace ones that are 10 years old and have really served you well, a new tube of tinted moisturiser after you've cut the old one open and eked it all out - seem so small. Saving a few quid on the groceries when Ddog suddenly requires £100 on eye drops seems a bit pointless really!

However...I think things should stabilise from here for the next 24 months, and then all my frugal habits and wisdom accumulated from this thread will stand me in good stead!

Anyway, time for a bit of DIY and a soothing podcast, methinks.

ememem84 · 28/10/2022 14:40

I had a sea swim today. Bloody cold. But invigorating. usually wouldn’t this late in the year but menta heath reset.

Socathe · 28/10/2022 16:06

£40 on glasses. I've never had to wear them before. They're just for long periods at the computer. Had a voucher from work so just had to pay the excess, went for a £89 pair as unfortunately didn't suit any of the cheaper ones or like them as much.

£50 for theatre tickets for December. Getting some fun Christmas activities booked in and paid for now so that we don't have to spend it all at once in December!

I wanted to go to the supermarket this afternoon but 3 year old DS has had a busy few weeks and didn't want to go out at all. So we stayed in, good for the purse I suppose.

WeightoftheWorld · 28/10/2022 17:54

Got friends staying so probs try and catch up with you all on Monday. But for financial news quicky:

  • Gave DH £50 cash yesterday for our takeaway dinner, sure it didn't cost that much but he ordered more than I asked him to, and hasn't given me any cash back, so that is gone hah. Was all I had too so am going to need to take some out sometime soon.
  • Emailed conveyancing solicitor last night with some queries we have so waiting to hear about that. DF also going to query something with his solicitors.
  • Got paid in 2/3 of my jobs today, the total wage bill of those two jobs is about £250 less than our bill for the November nursery fees. Absolutely no sign of pay or expenses in the other job but I have a meeting about it on Monday so that will be interesting I'm sure...
TheNewlmprovedMrsMadEvans · 28/10/2022 19:59

I have been to my local discount warehouse today & bought a few out of date goodies & some in date goodies too lol , spends 28 .
Dh and the 2 Dds are having a McDonalds tonight, another 26 for the three of them but it is a treat . I don't like takeaway food except Cod and chips so l am a cheap date lol
Hope everyone is ok and enjoying this weather supposed to be lovely tomorrow we shall see Halloween Grin

marthasmum · 28/10/2022 22:11

Glad you are treating yourself mrs
hurray for the sea swimming em and laska I would love to live near the sea
socathe must be lovely dropping your hours back
weight good luck with the moving arrangements. My elderly DPs are still waiting, they’re getting very stressed now
curls glad you have rallied a bit but how upsetting, please do try and be kind to yourself
need hope you are doing ok with your situation
tayto and happier must be very worrying with the cost of oil
big I really relate to your post. Im
much better off (and better with money) thank I used to be - and it’s easier to be better with money when you have more of it. But I also find it takes much longer than you think to claw back from unexpected expenses, and £5k is a lot to find. I’m still overspending on food but have decided it’s important to all of us and not necessarily where I want to cut back. I’ve got £1100 towards my holiday fund now so pleased with that.
hope decaff is ok, I wonder if she’s having her surgery?
hope you are recovering ok north
im working tomorrow on an open day, been a knackering week, I’m off to bed soon

needastrongoneagain · 29/10/2022 07:57

Morning.

Sorry to hear your DP's are stressed Martha, the conveyancing process is just awful. I agree, you've got to decide where to cut back. We don't eat out and eat mainly vegetarian, but cooking is enjoyable and therapeutic for me, so I do buy things that may cost more (but plenty at Lidl too!).

That's pretty crap re the pay and expenses situation weight, hope it goes okay Monday and you get reimbursed.

Plodding on here. Was supposed to be away Saturday night but a friend is now poorly so I'm not going. Can't decide if I'm relieved or disappointed, I get so tired these days and the sofa and Strictly tend to appeal but I'll miss the company.

Yesterday I had to fill the car
£75 (going up again)
£40 accessible taxi for DH.

Right, another coffee and then I'll menu plan.

CurlsandCurves · 29/10/2022 08:00

Morning all,

@WeightoftheWorld funny you should mention not being paid from one of your jobs. I’ve got the Sage app and our boss usually runs payroll a good few days before it’s due to land in our accounts. Payday is Monday and still nothing showing on the app. Hope I’m getting paid!

I’m in work today so might query it. Although there’s one colleague in today who I’m certain will have brought it up already, lol.

Ending the month with about £50 left. Which I will transfer out. I’ve had to take some money out of my ‘emergency £500’ account so I want to get that back up to where it should be.

lifelongfrugaleer · 29/10/2022 08:01

Fun day at the stables today and I’m running a tuck shop, that’s about it

sorry to hear about the cancellation need,

needastrongoneagain · 29/10/2022 08:59

Cheers life, probably don't feel up to it in truth and DH pretty down this week, so better I'm around I think. Enjoy the fun day!

Menu plan

Red wine mushroom casserole with cheese cobbler topping
Shakshuka, oven baked.
Store cupboard pasta bake.
Sweet potato and mushroom polenta with tomatoes
All in one sticky rice, broccoli, squash chilli and ginger
Squash and spinach curry
Lunch box pasta salad.

All from The Green Roasting Tin, Rukmini Iyer.

Taytocrisps · 29/10/2022 10:12

Morning everyone. It's a Bank Holiday weekend here and I'm off on Tuesday so I'm looking forward to a few days break.

I need to start thinking about Christmas presents. I love Christmas but I'm finding it hard to summon up the enthusiasm for shopping this year. Seems like such a waste - of time, money and items that will probably end up in a charity shop. But sure, has to be done. Anyway, I spent about an hour online this morning and I have a few ideas for people now. Once I get started, I'm usually ok. I'm thinking of getting tickets for West Side Story for my Dad and for my sister for Christmas. Dad is kind of hard to buy for because he hasn't many hobbies or interests. He loves his TV and he loves to travel and that's about it. He does like shows though. And the tickets will definitely get used and won't end up in landfill. The tickets are expensive but my Dad and sister were incredibly supportive when Ex and I separated. They also paid for our holiday in Spain this year and they contributed to DD's meals when we were on holiday. DD and I will go to the show also. That will be my birthday present to myself.

There's a Hallowe'en parade in a nearby town tonight so my Meet ups group are heading to that and then we're going for a meal in an Indian restaurant. It should be a good night. Fingers crossed the rain holds off for the parade. DD is going to someone's birthday night in the pub. It's fancy dress so she and her friends are all wearing disco outfits. She has black spangly trousers and a black spangly boob tube although she tells me that it's not as skimpy as it looks when she puts it on. I'll say nothing......

Right, I'd better head off and do my shopping. Chat soon.

TheNewlmprovedMrsMadEvans · 29/10/2022 16:46

Hope everyone is ok , Don't forget the clocks go back tonight Halloween Grin
