I fixed with eon next a few months back
30% more than current cap. V14

Hopefully this will help over the winter and any new price hikes which are due in October and January.

There is no penalty to leave this fix.

Bigoldhag · 08/08/2022 12:28

My current rate end on 3rd September. I’ve decided not to fix again for now. The current variable is significantly lower than what the new deals offered to me are (and I know is subject to big big change come October) so will review then I think. Hoping the energy rebate will keep me on an even keel through the winter - although I am home all day working so have a lot of heating. Been taking other steps to try and keep the bills down, like investing in a heated blanket and other warm things (via Vinted), staying away from the oven and tumble dryer etc.

Hoping its the right move. I think part of me is hoping for some sort of government intervention.

BirmaBrite · 08/08/2022 19:21

Sorry for being a bit dim ! its just we currently pay about £120 for duel fuel and we are in credit, don't use the heating much, max of two hours a day in the winter, one or two short showers a day and that is covered by putting the hot water on for half an hour a day. We are low gas users but higher electric so the £400 will be useful if it comes off the electric. I did used to use the tumble dryer a lot which is probably why we used more electric, but have weaned myself off it and tend to use an airer instead or the line if I am not at work.

You’ve done the right thing. I completely ignore Martin Lewis (first time in a long time) Because of that, I have 32p a unit electricity and 32p a day standing charge with BG, fixed until December 2023! Still Expensive but a bargain compared to most people. My reasoning at the time was, I can afford it and whilst I’d be gutted if the price plummeted I’d rather know what I’m paying. I don’t have gas.

Blankscreen · 09/08/2022 09:57

Our fix ends in September.

We currently pay £277 a month and we have built up quite a bit of credit.

Octopus have offered us a new fix at £769 a month. Wtaf.

If we do nothing they estimate £315 a month.

Even with a 70% increase on the price cap it will be £535 a month.

I can't see that fixing is a good idea for us but maybe I am missing something

purplepandas · 09/08/2022 10:02

Also not fixing with Octopus as stupid estimates for fixed prices. Really stressed me out as always fix but this is not a sensible option sadly.

Yes I feel the same. Wonder if I should change providers.

Afterfire · 09/08/2022 10:11

My offers to fix from Octopus have gone up overnight - monthly estimate to fix was £506, now offering £570! Not sure what’s changed overnight! No way can we afford to fix. (Currently paying £250 on variable - I know it’s down to unit rates etc but that’s the monthly dd price).

The price cap estimate for January has been increased to £4,266 this morning. So that might be what has changed it?

loveisagirlnameddaisy · 09/08/2022 10:28

I am one of the few (it seems) who did fix with Octopus - a month ago - but think it was probably too high. They offered me one fix on 1 July and by 5 July it had already gone up again. I fixed because I was panicking about the horrendous projections published by the media. I also am concerned that there will be another rise after October, so that needs to be taken into consideration as well.

I'm going to wait until 24 August as a) we're on holiday until then so usage is down and b) that's when the price cap for October is due to be announced.

There are no exit fees for my fix with Octopus so I'll just leave at that point if it transpires my fix is too high (although still worried about further increases after October).

My tariff is electricity (46.95) and gas (14.93). I know the gas is double the current cap, the electricity isn't quite so bad.

Ahhh I hadn’t seen that anywhere. I know the prices are due to increase in October and again in January but didn’t see the price cap estimate had increased this morning.

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 09/08/2022 11:08

I fixed with eon next a month ago because Martin Lewis said it was the best of a bad bunch and better than going with variable and risking much higher unit costs. It's doubled my unit cost and stranding charge. Fucking ridiculous.

loveisagirlnameddaisy · 09/08/2022 11:23

Does anyone know (or has worked out) what the Jan price increase means in terms of unit rates? The average figures trotted out are useless unless you're that actual house. We're above average.

LuckyAmy1986 · 09/08/2022 11:52

We're with octopus and also staying on variable.

CuttedUpDress · 09/08/2022 12:01

I fixed with Scottish Power back in September last year just before so this kicked off and my rate ends in August next year.

They have recently reduced my DD from £115 a month to £95 a month because I was paying too much.

I'm sure this will bite me on the arse at some point.

MrsGeoWolf · 09/08/2022 13:05

I'm with octopus and have not fixed I was paying about £2400 per year then it's went up to £3300 with the last increase. I really don't know what will happen if I can't pay the next increase which will maybe take my bill to over £5000 per year. I live in a 4 bedroom house but have 5 children and 4 children have different disability's so struggling to see where I can cut back on.

Thanks for that. Do you have anything showing the January increase?

ArtOfTheImpossible · 09/08/2022 17:35

Hi I'm looking for some advice, finding all the info on energy providers confusing and the price comparison sites won't let me compare deals.

I'm currently renting on an old pre payment meter. Since April haven't paid more than before that, a steady £50 per month electric for a 2 bed house. About £10-20 month on gas as we barely use it. 1 adult, 1 vhold.

We're due to move. To a house that currently has eon, will be direct debit. The epc rating of the house is 90 so very energy efficient or should be. I have no idea what to expect in terms of what I'll be paying in bills. Some of the figures quoted on here are scary.

I'm wondering whether to switch off the gas and just use electric, whether that would make a difference. Could boil kettle for washing up and use electric shower. No heating. Haven't thought of through yet.

2bazookas · 09/08/2022 17:41

Our previous tariff was due to expire and the provider offered two options, one fixed until Oct 2023, both with new annual price assessments based on our previous usage. The new fixed tariff was "ouch" higher than the new variable standard tarriff. (British Gas)

We dithered then bit the bullet and took the fixed tarriff; thank goodness we did because within a week new fuel cost predictions for winter went through the roof. The bill is going to be horrible but at least we know what tariff rate we'll be paying and can manage our use accordingly.

2bazookas · 09/08/2022 17:45

BirmaBrite · 08/08/2022 06:36

Say you have fixed at £300 a month for duel fuel , will you pay that minus the £400 the government are giving you or will that £66 just be credited to your account ?

Birma, tarrif "fix" refers to the unit rate , not the amount you'll pay per month.

My Octopus predictor seems to suggest they will reduce my dd by £66 for the winter months.
