We went against advice and fixed before the big increases hit and Im so glad we did! We are fixed until October 2023, but dread to think what the leap will be when the fix finishes!
Also just redid our mortgage to lock in a 3 year fix. Time will tell if that was a good idea or not

What are the unit prices and standing charges?

here…. Thanks

I got offered this by British Gas as a deal…. No idea why they think I would fix in with that.

@Offandonagain if you can fix at those prices I 100% would as they are pretty much the current cap. But I'd make sure you're looking at the correct cost as you are incredibly unlikely to get a fix at this rate at the moment so make sure you aren't looking at the current price rather than the fixed price.

Offandonagain · 07/08/2022 09:55

It’s like they’re trying to put us off going fixed… 🤔

Oh no, sorry that last pic is what I’m on now with variable. I shall have a loom at the fixed.

thanks

Because your current tariff predicted cost doesn't take into account the Oct and Jan price rises that are coming.

But it looks like they’ve already taken the cost rise in to account on their fixed … Or is is due to go up even more?!!

Offandonagain · 07/08/2022 09:59

So you want to look at the percentage increase in price and what is predicted to happen in Oct. When I fixed back in June they were saying anything under a 35% increase was a good deal. I'm not sure what the current advice is but I know it has gone up.

KatharineofAragon · 07/08/2022 10:02

I’m with octopus. Any one decides to fix with them?

Afterfire · 07/08/2022 10:02

This might help - price predictions per unit for October, compare any deals offered against this.

This is from the Facebook group I linked upthread.

No you're correct, that has been taken into account. I was talking to a different poster who couldn't understand why they would fix at a higher price.

I’m with octopus and staying on variable for now: the rates they’re offering me fixed are above the price predictions I’ve just posted upthread.

I'm trying to figure my offer out from British Gas, the unit rates look slightly higher than the predicted new cap, but a lower daily charge, not sure if this would be better or not if anyone who understands better could advise?

Monthly payment is meaningless. You need to compare price per kwh and standing charge. I'm not fixing as the fix offered by my supplier (octopus) is 80-110% higher than the current price cap which is more than the predicted rise in October. I am viewing the price cap as a short term fixed rate at the moment

This is what l keep thinking.....the monthly amount doesn't matter, it is cost per unit.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 07/08/2022 11:37

thanks for the facebook link
am confused now whether to go for fixed or variable
i currently pay 112 per month
and the fixed rate is 326 per month

shocking
there will be no heating Or eating in this household
however the variable quoted is 190
otoh martin lewis is not convincing me that a variable is the bst idea, and tbh i have Never gone variable, perhaps i should start?

So I guess it makes no difference whether you fix or not?… It might be worth the gamble to stay on variable?

Don't look at the monthly amount. Can you post the fixed rates you are being offered- price per kwh and standing charge. Its the best way to do a price comparison

Haybo26 · 07/08/2022 12:01

I fixed 3 months ago so as not to be affected by October price increases.

dementedpixie · 07/08/2022 12:10

@steggyandrex i work out that your electricity fix is 105.94% above the current price cap and your gas is 121.27% higher (without taking into account the standing charge)

alapdi · 07/08/2022 12:33

@Offandonagain looking at the figures you've been quoted possibly not worth sticking at the moment. Unfortunately I think the time to get deal was a couple of months ago.
