Follow on from the old thread

This is a space / long running thread for people wanting tips on making life cheaper for what ever reason and support who have to make living less expensive. If you are new here just post away everyone is welcome.

Frugal tips from the hive mind so far....

Check your outgoing-are they essential, are you on the best deal
Loyalty cards for stores you regularly shop at
Meal plan
Annual budget rather than monthly for those, well annual, expenses
Second hand is fine for 90% of stuff
Sign up to money saving expert emails
Insulation at home.
Close curtains at dark and tuck behind rads
Foil behind external wall rad
Turn the heating down . Tropical houses are not necessary
Use the washing line when you can
Look out for food recycling scheme- bread and butter thing, company shop, too good to go type things
Do you have to buy that Christmas/ birthday present. Can you give time instead
Eat less meat (tho I’m rubbish at this)
Have a on toast day. Or baked potato weekly
Double up while the oven is on for a reheat meal or a bake. Save electric running the oven less.
Branded goods are not always the best
-Walk those short trips if possible, instead of using the car (I am the worst for doing this). Saves petrol, good exercise too.
-Combine car trips better too eg dropped DD off at an activity tonight, which is next to the supermarket.
Cancel sky, if you still want the programmes switch to Now Tv for a fraction of the price
Cancel any subscriptions you don't need. Check direct debits to make sure you're not paying for anything you no longer need by accident
Check all your bills, insurances etc are the cheapest you can get for the cover you need (the last bit is important)
If you can get a voucher, use a cash back site or have some sort of work discount (nhs, bluelight, Tesco, student etc) check before paying
Meal plan before you shop. Make extra to freeze for another day as it's often cheaper per kg to buy bigger packs of meat
Go veggie a couple of times a week
Aldi and Lidl are great but not if you're going to get sidetracked by the aisle of doom
An annual budget is essential but pay yourself first each month so money into the annual pot, into savings, off debt before anything else happens. Make sure there's a line in your budget for fun money even if it's a tiny amount, budgeting can be a grind otherwise
You will have patches of spendiness and demotivation, don't give up just start again from wherever you end up
Take your own drinks, snacks, food, picnic - Invariably cheaper and nicer
Make your own if you have a stocked baking cupboard and spice cupboard. Cheaper and nicer, tho building said cupboard can be ££ (costs can be reduced by a visit to your local international supermarket)
Aldi for baking stuff it’s fine.
Work out of season for clothes as it’s usually cheaper
i switched to a coffee subscription (coffee is my weakness) - so our local shop delivers me a 250g bag of ground coffee every 2 weeks (i have 4 in the cupboard currently) and i make my own morning coffee. the subscription is for 6 months and costs me £58 i think. a takeaway from the same shop is £2.80 a pop. so it is a money saver. I bought a Contigo cup (spendy but worth every penny). so take my coffee hot to work with me.

I'm also a fan of using it up. so tings like toiletries, stationary (i am also a notebook hoarder) food etc. not replacing until it's all gone (or all of one thing gone).

my Lloyds account does "save the change" so it rounds up a purchase and then moves the pence to my savings account.

I also pay myself first on payday and am trying to use the things we have- zoo membership - use it loads so worth the £160 a year cost. same with my gym membership i use it so get my moneys worth.

Also what you can save/be frugal on can be inversely related to your means. If you have more "spare" money per month it's easier to buy in bulk and choose things that are cheapest per kg. If you have less or no spare money this isn't possible to do and then you're looking at cheapest price per item rather than per kg.

Agree re taking own stuff although I do often forget but a good coffee cup and water bottle is a good investment if you can afford it

If you have a dog use something like all about dog food to work out what the best food is you can buy based on what you can afford to spend per day
I also give the clothes an extra spin in the washing machine before they go in the dryer, and dry outside whenever i can - currently not living at home, so limited to a washer dryer (which is crap) and an airer next to a rad which i hate.

im a big fan of using the freezer and freeze anything i can. we buy reduced items (like bread and keep it in the freezer as it saves it going off - we maybe get through a loaf every couple of weeks).
I know that credit cards are sometimes seen here as the work of the devil (on MN specifically not this thread) but if you have one use to to your advantage. Mine gives me money back in the form of M&S or amazon vouchers every quarter depending on how much I've spent. and as long as you pay it off every month it works.
Top Cashback for all internet purchases.
Join the library - many have free access to Audible, Libby (for magazines and newspapers) as well as having an amazing selection of books.
Consider how you cook things - residual heat cooking works really well for rice and any slow cooker recipe.
Grow herbs and salad leaves on a window sill
Grow soft fruit - your local allotment / neighbours with a raspberry cane/ strawberry / current / gooseberry will be more than happy to give you a cutting.
Look for local food pantries
If you need credit use a Credit Union. If you are saving support your local credit union by becoming one of their savers.

Alfiemoon1 · 24/05/2022 22:19

Evening all hope you are all well. Had a chaotic few weeks. Ddogs leg is doing well but now his eye gland isn’t working properly so will need medication for life so another insurance claim about to go through. Left the new job and started a new one. Everything went pear shaped when I started the previous new job and the straw that broke the camels back and me was getting a call mil was being taken to hospital at 3am dh and his db were at work and her care home were short staffed so I had to go got back at 7 am and my nightmare neighbour screamed at me in the street as ddog who was crated due to his injury had been barking. I just broke down in tears couldn’t face going to work to hear nothing but negative feedback I had already been offered my new job so I texted my resignation of which they were surprised as I was doing really well?? Accepted new job and took a week off before starting

sadly mil deteriorated and was put on end of life care and true to form you couldn’t make my life up she passed away the day before I started my new job. Went in they were lovely shocked I went in given the circumstances. The funeral is 31 may so a short week for me next week

ememem84 · 25/05/2022 06:23

Up early today with the kiddos eating jammy toast watching bing.

afternoon so sorry to hear about mil xx

What a time you've had Alfie Flowers

I'm going to buy ds McDonalds this morning before I drop him at residential. Will also get petrol. Wanted to go to the gym this morning but my fuel light is on so I couldn't.

ememem84 · 25/05/2022 09:02

£795 (?!?!) for an online tax course with a 5 hour exam. Three full days of tax. Plus exam. Eeeep. Uk tax for international clients.

also done my expenses form. Yay. So will get this back either this week or next months pay. I’ve asked for soonest.

lifelongfrugaleer · 25/05/2022 09:20

Oh alfie what a time you have had

Timetoswitch · 25/05/2022 12:46

Big hug alfie 💐

ocado sent me a 30% off £60 bribe as I no longer shop regularly. So I’ve done my shop including the couple of things we like that we can only get there.

WreckTangled · 25/05/2022 16:04

£5.74 McDonald's thanks to the nhs discount
£50 petrol which only 3/4 filled the tank of t old tiny granny car. Have 260 miles left in it after today.

Our trust have a new system where you can request your earned wages early. I think this is a recipe for disaster really and can't see it helping anyone, just making things worse.

lifelongfrugaleer · 25/05/2022 21:08

£2.60 on a toasted sandwich at work. that’s it unplanned today

TheNewlmprovedMrsMadEvans · 25/05/2022 21:42

I’m guessing that system is designed to help people but in reality it won’t. I mean say this month you got wages early. Then you’d have to wait until next mo th. Or get next months early…. Rearing a problem of potentially a million paydays

WreckTangled · 26/05/2022 05:39

Exactly. It'll only allow you to take out what you've already earned but when you're used to be paid monthly it's not going to help at all. Plus they charge you a (small) transaction fee for the pleasure!

I'm just going to the gym. Didn't win the lottery which is a shame

ememem84 · 26/05/2022 06:47

I’m still in bed. Should be getting up really.

today is busy. I have a tax webinar at 9 (why do I do this to myself?!) a few meetings. Coffee with a lawyer friend to hopefully talk about some potential business. Then at 5 I have a networking thing (presentation then drinks).

then I have to get home and be dhs audience for his promotion presentation practice.

on the plus side cleaners are coming today. Phew.

lifelongfrugaleer · 26/05/2022 07:23

I had an extra hour in bed and it’s bliss. So busy but so tired so adding self care into it

lifelongfrugaleer · 26/05/2022 07:23

That pay idea sounds like a disaster waiting to happen

WreckTangled · 26/05/2022 07:32

I wanted to spend a bit longer at the gym, as ds is on residential, but dd decided she needed me to do her hair so I had to come back at my usual time as she has to leave for school at 7:30. Now I'm just lying on my bed but I really should be getting ready for work...

ememem84 · 26/05/2022 07:54

We’re waiting for DH to get ready so we can leave. Last 2 days he’s been away. So me and the dc have got ready and out the house by 745. I naively thought I could do it today too. Nope.

CurlsandCurves · 26/05/2022 08:40

Morning, dance fit class, brunch with a friend then work for me today.

Woke up to a brilliant piece of news. Our car is one of those affected by the VW emissions scandal. A few years ago we joined a group led by a big solicitors which has acted on our behalf to bring a case against VW. It’s us nothing, we just filled a form in and have been receiving email updates every few months.
Had an email this morning to say the case has been settled and we have a cheque coming in the post! It’s a pretty decent amount as well. All along we said even if it’s £50 at the end it’s something for nothing so this is fantastic for us!

ememem84 · 26/05/2022 13:00

Gymshark have their sale on today if anyone is looking for new gym wear.

Decafflatteplease · 26/05/2022 13:17

Morning all

Good news here we won £50 voucher in a school raffle I think we are going to buy some more outdoor toys with it my teens are desperate for a swing ball and football goal so probably get those.

Getting a McDonald's tonight as an end of term treat plus DH is working late tonight so it's easy meals all the way! We have got our McDonald's order down though by not buying drinks and sharing large chips and bringing the food home. Trying to explain it. Eg rather than us each getting a meal each so 6 meals we buy things seperate eg 20 nuggets, 3 large chips, a few of the 99p burgers (my teens eat at least 2 of these each) plus I normally get whatever wrap is £1.99 and it works out alot cheaper than proper meals. And we have coke etc at home.

TheNewlmprovedMrsMadEvans · 26/05/2022 15:56

Afternoon everyone 😊
Beautiful out now after a cold windy start .
Spends today Morrisons £15
Have a lovely day everyone 😊

lifelongfrugaleer · 26/05/2022 18:14

Good news about the vw settlement. We should have done it but forgot
great news on the £50’win
hope the tax seminar was fun
nsd today
shopping tomorrow

AdoraBell · 26/05/2022 19:02

Hope the work things went well em

That pay thing doesn’t sound good Wreck

Well done re the VW Curles. I think every VW/other brands owners should claim because the companies did it intentionally, but DH won’t because he thinks the whole “miss sold” thing is unfair on the businesses.

👍 Decaf

We have yet to order blinds so I got hardly any sleep last night and gave up at 6 am Hmm

NSD. I tried to have a coffee in the local place but it wasn’t open 🤷‍♀️

WreckTangled · 27/05/2022 06:51

Went to the gym. Left halfway through my second exercise as was doing so shit and thought I might cry.

I've got a click and collect today as I've got to pick ds up from his school trip so won't have time to go to Aldi. It's £125 which is over budget but I think I was under last week so should balance out.

ememem84 · 27/05/2022 07:45

Tax thing was ok. The thing after work however was a waste of time (although I got a glass of wine…). It was pitched to us as an event for the new generation of trustees. The presentation when we got there was “what is a trust” and aimed at very new starters. So the law firm had got it wrong by either inviting the wrong level of people or the wrong presentation.

im off to dr today (once I phone at 8 and make an appointment). My throats killing me. One side is red and swollen with white spots. So I think it needs attention.

also taking the kids to the castle today. They’re learning about the queen in nursery and preschool so we thought we’d go. This will be free as we’re heritage members. £5 a month.
