Follow on from the old thread

This is a space / long running thread for people wanting tips on making life cheaper for what ever reason and support who have to make living less expensive. If you are new here just post away everyone is welcome.

Frugal tips from the hive mind so far....

Check your outgoing-are they essential, are you on the best deal
Loyalty cards for stores you regularly shop at
Meal plan
Annual budget rather than monthly for those, well annual, expenses
Second hand is fine for 90% of stuff
Sign up to money saving expert emails
Insulation at home.
Close curtains at dark and tuck behind rads
Foil behind external wall rad
Turn the heating down . Tropical houses are not necessary
Use the washing line when you can
Look out for food recycling scheme- bread and butter thing, company shop, too good to go type things
Do you have to buy that Christmas/ birthday present. Can you give time instead
Eat less meat (tho I’m rubbish at this)
Have a on toast day. Or baked potato weekly
Double up while the oven is on for a reheat meal or a bake. Save electric running the oven less.
Branded goods are not always the best
-Walk those short trips if possible, instead of using the car (I am the worst for doing this). Saves petrol, good exercise too.
-Combine car trips better too eg dropped DD off at an activity tonight, which is next to the supermarket.
Cancel sky, if you still want the programmes switch to Now Tv for a fraction of the price
Cancel any subscriptions you don't need. Check direct debits to make sure you're not paying for anything you no longer need by accident
Check all your bills, insurances etc are the cheapest you can get for the cover you need (the last bit is important)
If you can get a voucher, use a cash back site or have some sort of work discount (nhs, bluelight, Tesco, student etc) check before paying
Meal plan before you shop. Make extra to freeze for another day as it's often cheaper per kg to buy bigger packs of meat
Go veggie a couple of times a week
Aldi and Lidl are great but not if you're going to get sidetracked by the aisle of doom
An annual budget is essential but pay yourself first each month so money into the annual pot, into savings, off debt before anything else happens. Make sure there's a line in your budget for fun money even if it's a tiny amount, budgeting can be a grind otherwise
You will have patches of spendiness and demotivation, don't give up just start again from wherever you end up
Take your own drinks, snacks, food, picnic - Invariably cheaper and nicer
Make your own if you have a stocked baking cupboard and spice cupboard. Cheaper and nicer, tho building said cupboard can be ££ (costs can be reduced by a visit to your local international supermarket)
Aldi for baking stuff it’s fine.
Work out of season for clothes as it’s usually cheaper
i switched to a coffee subscription (coffee is my weakness) - so our local shop delivers me a 250g bag of ground coffee every 2 weeks (i have 4 in the cupboard currently) and i make my own morning coffee. the subscription is for 6 months and costs me £58 i think. a takeaway from the same shop is £2.80 a pop. so it is a money saver. I bought a Contigo cup (spendy but worth every penny). so take my coffee hot to work with me.

I'm also a fan of using it up. so tings like toiletries, stationary (i am also a notebook hoarder) food etc. not replacing until it's all gone (or all of one thing gone).

my Lloyds account does "save the change" so it rounds up a purchase and then moves the pence to my savings account.

I also pay myself first on payday and am trying to use the things we have- zoo membership - use it loads so worth the £160 a year cost. same with my gym membership i use it so get my moneys worth.

Also what you can save/be frugal on can be inversely related to your means. If you have more "spare" money per month it's easier to buy in bulk and choose things that are cheapest per kg. If you have less or no spare money this isn't possible to do and then you're looking at cheapest price per item rather than per kg.

Agree re taking own stuff although I do often forget but a good coffee cup and water bottle is a good investment if you can afford it

If you have a dog use something like all about dog food to work out what the best food is you can buy based on what you can afford to spend per day
I also give the clothes an extra spin in the washing machine before they go in the dryer, and dry outside whenever i can - currently not living at home, so limited to a washer dryer (which is crap) and an airer next to a rad which i hate.

im a big fan of using the freezer and freeze anything i can. we buy reduced items (like bread and keep it in the freezer as it saves it going off - we maybe get through a loaf every couple of weeks).
I know that credit cards are sometimes seen here as the work of the devil (on MN specifically not this thread) but if you have one use to to your advantage. Mine gives me money back in the form of M&S or amazon vouchers every quarter depending on how much I've spent. and as long as you pay it off every month it works.
Top Cashback for all internet purchases.
Join the library - many have free access to Audible, Libby (for magazines and newspapers) as well as having an amazing selection of books.
Consider how you cook things - residual heat cooking works really well for rice and any slow cooker recipe.
Grow herbs and salad leaves on a window sill
Grow soft fruit - your local allotment / neighbours with a raspberry cane/ strawberry / current / gooseberry will be more than happy to give you a cutting.
Look for local food pantries
If you need credit use a Credit Union. If you are saving support your local credit union by becoming one of their savers.

They are some good bargains. M&S was being stingy last night

WreckTangled · 14/05/2022 07:48

That's amazing ears I always find M&S yellow suckers not great but that's in the day time. I bet they're better in the evening. The trouble is we're 7 miles from M&S and Waitrose so it's a long way to drive if there's no bargains to be had. ................... I always find co op good in the early evening for their reduced items. I had a quick look in tesco yesterday too but their yellow stickers are always awful too.

ememem84 · 14/05/2022 07:52

Oooh @earsup great yello haul.

we are going to a wedding today. Yay

lifelongfrugaleer · 14/05/2022 09:36

Have a great day em. Lovely weather here lots of Washing being done. And patio grouting and jet washing

WreckTangled · 14/05/2022 09:56

lifelongfrugaleer · 14/05/2022 12:15

Gensola · 14/05/2022 12:30

£29.99 fertility vitamins and supplements. Train to London prepaid and have free tickets to art show but will need to buy food/drinks.
Meal plan done - looking forward to finishing my last 3 weeks with PT as we are eating more meat than usual so I can hit her crazy protein targets.
Sunday - roast chicken with roasted beetroot, fennel and new potatoes and kale or broccoli.
mon - chicken, pepper and artichoke tray bake (using tinned artichokes - cheap as chips and tasty!)
tues - lasagne from batch in freezer with roasted cauliflower and broad bean salad
Weds - out at work do
Thurs - prawn and tomato risotto with salad
Fri - sample of our wedding food 😝 can’t wait!
I’m not sure if I’ve said, sorry if I have, we are finally having our wedding reception this summer after cancelling our reception in 2020 cos of covid, we got legally married then so having a blessing now and the party! Yay!

earsup · 14/05/2022 12:58

I am finding Waitrose yellow stickers up and down....for years we stopped at the local one after yoga so in area anyway and always got lots of stuff very cheap....but some weeks recently, they have only reduced a £3 item by 40p...and they have shut the shop at 9pm with trolleys of items all full....odd....back to normal yesterday.....

lifelongfrugaleer · 14/05/2022 14:16

Great news on the blessings and party booking gen

Timetoswitch · 14/05/2022 16:21

Oooh exciting to hear about your wedding reception gen

I tried to get a yellow sticker desert from M&S yesterday, but there was none there so collected my package and bought nothing.

We sometimes get unsold yellow sticker stuff at work, and looking at the prices I wonder why they haven’t reduced the prices more.

Decafflatteplease · 14/05/2022 17:34

£150 on ocado although that did include vitamins. That's not even a full weeks shop maybe 4 days although some things will last longer.

I was sitting there clicking thinking how much cheaper I could get things in Lidl but I don't have time to go this week.

WreckTangled · 14/05/2022 18:48

Nsd here. Dh bought some snacks and a bottle of Prosecco for Eurovision tonight but I'm hoping he paid himself. Dd wants to stay up and watch it, I probably won't make the end. Dh is already asleep on the sofa Confused

ememem84 · 15/05/2022 01:10

Home from wedding. It was wonderful. We were meant to go in 2020 to the wedding but covid. So it was today. The dc were picked up at 745 by dparents and DH and I danced and drank with friends. Best time ever.

I stopped the alcohol by 9. So am feeling hungover now. But should hopefully be ok in the morning after a nice sleep.

the dc are sleeping at dparents. So should maybe get a lie in too!!!!

ememem84 · 15/05/2022 09:39

Off to get the car now. Sigh. Tired.

and my washing machine is broken. Or at least isn’t working as it’s not draining.

there is a blockage in the filter cap so need to open it. But can’t because it’s blocked.

WreckTangled · 15/05/2022 09:46

We didn't wake up until 9. Feel like half the days gone already! Rain forecast here today so won't be doing much should be a nsd.

lifelongfrugaleer · 15/05/2022 10:45

Drive prepped for jet wash.
sleep in here to 825. Feel much better

northender · 15/05/2022 12:26

Just popping in to say hello. Struggling to keep up, things a bit overwhelming here at the moment, but managing to keep spending down, for now. Holly tree demolition this afternoon & study...

Taytocrisps · 15/05/2022 16:19

Hope all is well with everyone.

I cleared a load of junk off my kitchen windowsill yesterday and cleaned my Venetian blinds and the window etc. Today I bought a few nice bits (plant pot, scented candle and decorative plate) in TK Maxx. Now the kitchen window area looks pretty and inviting and as it's straight in front of you when you walk into the kitchen, it has really transformed the room.

Spends today :-

TK Maxx €30.97
Woodies (small plant) €3.99
Cat food/litter €30.97
Groceries €54.48

All quiet with me otherwise. I watched the Eurovision last night with a few glasses of wine.

We were promised a gorgeous, sunny day today but it's actually been fairly overcast. Warm but overcast. I'd say there are a lot of disappointed people who were planning barbecues. Obviously they were still able to go ahead with their barbecues (at least it didn't rain) but we didn't get the glorious sunshine they promised.

DD is heading into her last full week at school. She finishes up on Tuesday week and then she'll have a few weeks to study before her exams kick off on the 8th June. This academic year has just flown by.

Right, better hang out my last washload and get dinner started. I'm doing chicken in a barbecue sauce, garlic potatoes, broccoli and roast veg. (peppers, mushrooms and onions).

I'll come back later and catch up on your news.

Unescorted · 15/05/2022 16:38

Sorry - been MIA for a few days. Hope you are all well.

Starlight thanks for de lurking for the top tips.

em I hope you have had the chance to get an afternoon nap in.

North hope things calm down for you.

Time I hope you have got hold of A&E and your dad is OK. xxxx

I nearly died of shock yesterday at the petrol station - just short of £80. I was only just on the first mention of a fill up nag from the car.

I was saved by the yellow stickers in Morrisons.... around here on a Sunday the sweet spot is just after people go into church. Heathens get the best bargains it appears. During the week it is first thing in the morning.

The garden is coming along nicely - saving me the weekly bunch of flowers, bag of salad and several bags of herbs. I think I am going to have to crack on with getting rid of the mares tail in the front garden as I am going to run out of room.

Timetoswitch · 15/05/2022 17:17

Dmum finally heard from the hospital yesterday afternoon, as he was being released back to the care home. They couldn’t find a cause for the weird sickness.

I’ve sorted a load of ill fitting clothes to go in the loft.

Bought a couple of new with tags dresses from eBay. £23.50. Hoping they fit!

ememem84 · 15/05/2022 18:00

Had a nap.

chirkcn massaman for lunch. Loads of veggies in it plus fluffy rice and naan. Yum.

I was relatively sensible last night. Dparents picked the kids up at around 8. I had no more alcohol after that. Soft drinks were free at the hotel. I think I spent £60 on booze yesterday. £35 on the first round in the pub pre wedding and then a couple of other smaller ones. Not bad.

DH drank all the alcohol. Literally. Every kind. So he’s feeling gritty today. No sympathy though.

took Pliers to the washing machine. Gave me more leverage so was able to open it up and de junk the filter. Fluff pennies screws etc.

marthasmum · 15/05/2022 19:14

mrs sounds a lovely wedding!
gen exciting plans under way for yours!
em I’m well impressed at you tackling the washing machine with pliers, whilst hung over
timr I hope your DDad will recover soon
Just had a lovely weekend with DMum and DSis in Bath. We stayed in Airbnb and cooked at home one night so not as pricey as I’d feared. £39 on pub lunch, about £20 on some other bits and £30 on petrol. Long drive back though I listened to my audiobook in the car all the way which was a treat!
GCSEs start tomorrow for DS1 and this week for DD. She is working really hard to finish her A level photography portfolio.

TheNewlmprovedMrsMadEvans · 15/05/2022 19:51

It WAS a lovely wedding Martha . The only bad thing was one of the brides Mother and sister were very anti the wedding , they had faces of stone the whole time. l didn't give them the time of day . Brides are lovely ladies and if they are happy and not hurting anyone then Good Luck to them l say. The sister was supposed to be bridesmaid but refused to be bridesmaid 2 days before the wedding , l can't understand ppl like that , each to their own l know but why go if they felt like that ? It didn't put a damper on it though they just showed themselves up .
Well done on the pliers attack Em Grin
Time l hope your Dad is better soon Flowers
Martha Good luck to your Dc with their exams SmileTayto well done on all your hard work and very good luck to your Dd in her exams Smile
Good luck to all your DC who have exams looming Flowers
