HumbugWhale · 05/02/2022 07:21

Yes that's worked Martha, thank you. Need to charge my phone then I'll watch it.

lifelongfrugaleer · 05/02/2022 08:19

Yeah about the appeal outcome and tax rebate
Definitely worth picking up poor service

Sainsburys today is about £80
That’s it hopefully

Wolfcub · 05/02/2022 08:20

I have to say Unescorted I'm feeling jealous if anyone with a wood burner right now and if I wasn't doing the kitchen this year I'd be highly tempted to rip the gas fire out of the living room and replace it with a wood burner. I could have run it for free last weekend with all the wood I could have gathered after the storm

marthasmum · 05/02/2022 08:54

We have one, it needs servicing and the chimney sweeping though. I don't think it draws properly.
Excited as I have a £20 Lidl voucher for buying my car insurance via confused.com!

CurlsandCurves · 05/02/2022 09:18

I know what you mean, @Wolfcub! We gutted and remodelled our living room last year, moving walls, all sorts. And we did almost have a log burner but then decided against it. Which was the right thing for us, but oh the money we could be saving now!

Day off today but lots to do as I work Sundays. Just a small spend planned, quick trip to Sainsbury’s to buy DH his favourite beer as that’s the only place that sells it.

Alfiemoon1 · 05/02/2022 09:33

Morning all nsd yesterday. Dog is at the groomers today think it’s about £30 but he needs doing as he currently looks a cross between bojo and rod stewart.
Need to do a bit of food shopping as well need to take ds to work soon and pick him up later

Need to call and see my dm for a bit as haven’t seen her all week hopefully she hasn’t seen the news about the energy increases as dispite having plenty of money she gets stressed about it she’s 81

Dmil is in hospital so hoping to visit her at the weekend she is usually in a care home we haven’t been able to visit her as they have had covid in the home so for her birthday on 24 Jan we sent her some flowers. The home then rang asking did we not know she had been in hospital a week with covid no we didn’t know !!!! Anyway we phoned the hospital she was fine no longer had covid she was going to be discharged the next day. She didn’t get discharged as she is diabetic and they needed to sort her bloods out. That was over a week ago and she’s still in there nobody answers the phone to find out how she is or what’s happening brother in law visited the other day and said she’s lost an awful lot of weight there wasn’t much of her anyway so we are hoping to visit her this weekend as we have no idea what is going on she’s 87 always been very fit and active for her age but has dementia

lifelongfrugaleer · 05/02/2022 09:40

You say that but if the wood isn’t dry it doesn’t burn well. However loss are not overly expensive, yet
Thats a bit rubbish you didn’t know about mil.

northender · 05/02/2022 09:55

Been MIA due simply to general busyness here.
Have felt really angry about things this week. Politics, cost of living, state of the country.....
I feel so thankful for our frugal ways and that we have good & safe (as much as they can be) jobs. A car upgrade was planned this year but I think we will keep it going until it dies or maintenance is too much. It's 12 years old this year with 180000 on the clock but sailed through MOT last year. We were also planning fitted wardrobes in our bedroom but might put that on hold too & paint the 1990s pine furniture we've already got.
We've just booked a mortgage switch for the end of April when our current fix ends. We're going for a 5 year fix & that will take us pretty much to full pay off.
In Devon for a belated Christmas visit. Mamma Mia at theatre tonight, dinner out tomorrow then home.
Lovely to see Curls back and new faces too
Thanks for the new thread unescorted

Alfiemoon1 · 05/02/2022 10:00

Dsis who has worked as a care home manager and cqc inspector previously wanted dh to make a complaint imagine if she had passed away and we didn’t even know she was in there but dh doesn’t want to
Neither the care home or hospital are keeping us updated and nobody answers when we call I understand they are busy but we have no idea how she is or why she is still in there. Slightly annoyed at bil who did get to visit but didn’t find out any medical information just text see her while you can as there nothing left of her. I presume he just means she’s lost weight but no information on why she is still in there what they are doing for her or when she is likely to be out

Taytocrisps · 05/02/2022 10:08

Morning everyone. It's a wet and windy day here. I'm looking forward to the rugby later.

DD has her mock exams next week so she'll be spending most of the weekend studying.

I made my first chilli during the week. DD gave it the seal of approval - she's a big chilli fan. We served it with nachos and guacamole the first night and rice the second night. Nice to have a new dish to serve up - we get tired of the same few dishes all the time.

I'm expecting my car insurance quote this month. Hoping it's not too high.

Meeting a close friend for lunch tomorrow. I haven't seen her since before Covid, so it will be great to have a catch up.

DD was awarded a €20 voucher in school. Only thing is, it's a voucher to be used in our town. And we live in a very small town. The shops (supermarket, fruit and veg. shop, hardware, boutique selling "Mammy" clothes - DD's expression, gift/home style shop) don't appeal to her. I'll probably end up buying it off her. The annoying thing is, I had just bought a lamp in the gift/home shop the day before. I could have got rid of it then and given her the cash.

DD is currently planning a post-exams sun holiday with her friends this summer. Only thing is, they're nearly all 17 and they need someone who is 18 in order to book an apartment or villa. The one friend who is 18 says she can't go because her parents can't afford to pay for the flights/accommodation etc. So it's looking like it won't go ahead. I told her to hold off until next summer but she says that the other girls are really impatient and don't want to wait an entire year. We'll see what happens.

Wolfcub · 05/02/2022 11:32

Alfie that's appalling
Tayto I can't wait for the rugby either
I am soaked through following a dog walk that turned into heavy sleet. All the cleaning I did yesterday is for nought, doesn't matter how well you wash and dry the dog if your main rooms open straight onto the street you're going to get wet/mud everywhere le sigh. I'm having hot choc to warm up
Made a tagine this morning for Monday and marinaded another load of chicken and banged it in the freezer for later. I'm finding ocado use by dates shorter than they used to be
Second load of washing done just need to hang it on the airer
North great news that you managed to get the fix sorted. I know what you mean about holding off work. Honestly I'd hold the kitchen off if I could but I've held it off so long it's beyond reasonable repair

HumbugWhale · 05/02/2022 11:38

Alfie that's unbelievable they hadn't told you. I think you should complain. Hope MIL is ok.

Alfiemoon1 · 05/02/2022 13:23

It’s not my place to complain really as I am not next of kin
Dh managed to speak to the hospital they have moved her on to insulin she was previously tablet controlled she’s up sat in a chair no visiting and she may be discharged on Monday back to the home once she has been assessed by the doctor
